A 14 year old girl in Pakistan who was targeted by Taliban militants has undergone a successful operation to have a bullet removed from her head.

The victim is the author of a blog for BBC Urdu about living as a schoolgirl in an area that was under Taliban rule. She has received significant media attention and awards for her courageous outcries about the oppression and day to day life while the Taliban controlled her home of Swat Valley, Pakistan.

As a result, she was also targeted by Taliban militants who said that she “promoted secularism,” according to a BBC report.

The Taliban was driven out of the area, but Iqbal Hussain, one of the girl’s teachers is quoted by the Guardian as saying: “The suicide bombings and blasts may be over in Swat but this attack has rung alarm bells reminding us that militants are still in Swat.”

She was shot while riding a school bus. Armed men who were specifically looking for her stopped the bus and opened fire.
