Police chief survives attack in Afghanistan

Four people are killed and dozens wounded after insurgents targeted the police chief in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province.

The police chief suffered minor injuries.

The previous chief was killed in April 2011 when a suicide bomber wearing a police uniform slipped past security.

A witness describes the latest attack

(SOUNDBITE) (PASHTO) ABDUL NAFEH, EYEWITNESS SAYING:

"The explosion was very big. Twenty four of our neighbors were wounded. When I walked out from my house I saw bodies and several wounded at the scene."

The attack comes barely a day after insurgents beheaded 17 party-goers in neighboring Helmand province, highlighting security problems in the region ahead of a 2014 withdrawal of most NATO combat troops.
