STORY: Qatar's ruling emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani discussed developments in Syria with Jordanian King Abdullah II, the Qatar news agency said on Friday.

King Abdullah was on a visit to Doha, from where he will head to Mecca for an Islamic summit called by Saudi King Abdullah.

Jordanian news agency Petra said Sheik Hamad and King Abdullah agreed on the need for a political solution to the violence in Syria, as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fights a 17-month-uprising against his rule.

The two leaders also voiced concerns over the regional consequences of the Syrian conflict and expressed a desire for "joint Arab action" on the issue, Petra said.

Syria's neighbors, including Jordan, are bracing for a potential flood of people trying to get away from the fighting.
