Thousands gathered in Accra on Friday to say farewell to a man loved by many, who died suddenly just months before national elections.

"I have walked almost two and half hours to be here and it's so important to me because I love my president that is why I am here."

Mills has won international praise for his country's stable democracy and promoting oil exports over the last two years.

Ghana's vice president is acting as caretaker until polls at the end of the year.
