STORY: Chinese president Hu Jintao attended a banquet in his honor on Saturday, the second day of his three-day visit to Hong Kong, before joining in the singing on stage at the end of a gala performance.

Hu was in Hong Kong to oversee the swearing-in of a new chief executive on Sunday, when current leader Donald Tsang will be replaced by his Beijing-backed successor, Leung Chun-ying.

After the dinner, the Chinese leader watched a gala which featured a kung-fu show and an acrobatic performance.

At the end of the show, Hu went up on to the stage and shook hands with the performers.

Then the Chinese president joined the gala performers to sing "Ode to the Motherland," a well-known patriotic song which pays tribute to Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China.
