Billy Thorburn formed one of Britain's most successful bands of the late 1930's, but it was more than a band. The unique combination of a dance band, Billy's virtuosic piano style and a pipe-organ was very popular with the British public who bought many records by The Organ, the Dance Band & Me and his touring band Billy Thorburn & His Music. His career had started around 1923, when he began broadcasting and was appointed by Debroy Somers as second pianist with the Savoy Orpheans. After leaving the Orpheans he worked with Jay Wilbur's studio band till 1933. During 1931-32, he also worked with Jerry Hoey, Sydney Kyte and Jack Payne. In 1935 he left Payne's band; by the summer of 1936 his own band was playing at Bournemouth's Royal Bath Hotel, and started recording under his own name. This exquisite recording was made in 1936, with a vocal by Ken Crossley. It should be noted that, in order to obtain better sound, I post-synchronized the film footage using the studio disc recording.
