Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returns home to a hero's welcome.

The socialist leader landed in Caracas on Friday following six weeks of cancer treatment in Cuba.

Chavez gave a rousing speech and even sang a tune - a careful show of vigor amid rumours that his cancer is potentially fatal.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA HUGO CHAVEZ SAYING:

"I must inform you that in the last few days we have successfully completed the full radiation therapy cycle just as it was planned by the medical group."

Little is known about the severity of his cancer, with the details a state secret.

But Chavez has undergone several rounds of radiation and at least three surgeries, including one to remove a baseball-sized tumor.

He plans to run in Venezuela's next presidential election, set for October.
