Berlusconi government mired in political crisis

Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, has asked parliament for a confidence vote on Friday days after his government lost the voting of a budget law.

The Italian PM insisted that only his team can save the Italian economy.

But the opposition politicians say the confidence vote on the prime minister won't solve the country's problems.

Demonstrations against the government have been a weekly occurrence since the approval of a punishing austerity budget in July.

Whatever may be the result of the confidence vote, one thing is clear Berlusconi seems to have lost the confidence of the people.

Al Jazeera's Claudio Lavanga reports from Rome.
