Rape used as a weapon in DR Congo war - 22 Oct 09

Rape as a weapon of war has become an every day practice in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

More than 5,000 women have been attacked, terrorised and mutilated in South Kivu province this year alone, according to the United Nations.

About 90 per cent of the rapes are allegedly committed by armed groups or regular forces.

Mohammed Adow reports from Goma, where rape victims are admitted to the hospital each and every day.

The number of patients is so high that patients have to wait for months for reconstructive surgery to heal injuries inflicted through torture by their attackers.
