Gudi Padwa Celebration

Thousands of Mumbaikars participated in a colourful Gudi Padava (Padwa) procession on Friday. The first day of the lunar month of 'Chaitra' is believed to be the day when Lord Brahma created the universe. Maharashtrians celebrate the day as Gudi Padava or the beginning of the new 'Saka' year. On this occasion, many households instal the Gudi, a pole topped off by an upturned copper kalash (pot), in the doorway and decorate their homes with garlands and rangoli. They also prepare sweets such as puran poli and shrikhand puri.
