STORY: Pakistan conducted a test flight of an indigenously developed multi-tube cruise missile on Friday.
In a public statement available on its website, the Pakistani military Inter Services Public Relations organization described the Hatf-VII cruise missile as a terrain hugging missile with high maneuverability, stealth capabilities at low altitudes, and one that can deliver nuclear and conventional warheads with pin-point accuracy.
The Babur missile has a range of 700 km, and also incorporates modern cruise missile technology called Terrain Contour Matching, as well as Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation.
The military statement also said that a special feature of Friday's launch was the validation of a new multi-tube missile launch vehicle during the test.
The test-fire of the missile, held at undisclosed location, was witnessed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Khalid Shameem Wyne, as well as senior officers, scientists and engineers of strategic organizations.
After the test was declared successful, both the Pakistani president and the prime minister greeted the scientists and engineers on their success.
Pakistan has carried out a raft of nuclear-capable missile tests in recent years, including one in March 2011.
Tests typically tend to be carried out by both Pakistan and its neighbor India in response to one another, as tensions remain entrenched between them from the three wars fought since independence in 1947.
Friday's exercise was not expected to lead to any increase in tension between them, though it was unclear if India had been informed of the test prior to it being carried out, as has been practiced in the past.
