Heavy rains cause rivers in eastern India to overrun their banks - flooding local villages and leaving residents stranded.
Houses and cars lie submerged under flood waters, and wide swathes of agricultural land have been destroyed.
In the capital of Bihar state houses have been flooded with knee-deep water - bringing life to a standstill.
(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) DHIRENDRAKUMAR GAUTAM, A RESIDENT OF PATNA, SAYING:
"This is the result of four hours of rain and it has destroyed our house. It has become difficult for us to move out of the house. The car has been submerged in floodwater. Our guests are
sitting outside the house. Nobody is able to enter the community. This is a posh community. The civic authorities do not pump the water and the water does not drain out properly - good
governance has turned into bad governance."
This year's monsoon has also caused heavy flooding in much of northern India - and has claimed numerous lives.
