002 | Astroturfing | Escape and Control

Jon Ronson continues the 'Escape and Control' series with a story about Wendell Potter - former Vice President of corporate communications for CIGNA, one of the world's biggest health insurance companies.

He spoke of patient Nataline Sarkisyan, who battled with Leukemia back in 2007 whilst CIGNA refused to provide a needed liver transplant.

This sparked an uprising from bloggers who took to the streets of California in protest, proving that grassroots movements can be very influential. Therefore this became a model big corporations wished to replicate as a marketing tool and consequently Wendell Potter has become a whistleblower to try and spread awareness of this corrupt institution.
