Tips on Grooming Your Bird - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Ian Brown here at the Golden Cockatoo, and I am going to tell you how to groom a parrot. The first thing you want to do is properly restrain the bird so he is comfortable and then you can work with them. It also avoids the birds being afraid of hands. First, we gently wrap them up leaving the feet exposed and then carefully, using the proper types of scissors, you clip off a little bit at a time, using a little styptic powder to stop and prevent all bleeding. Now, we are just checking on the bird making sure he is doing okay in there. Do a little clip. A little powder. A little clip. A little powder. Next, what we will do is the wings. You want to carefully bring the parrot's wing out. What we like to do is clip the first seven feathers, or seven flight feathers, on the parrot, staying right about the coverts. This will keep the bird from crashing and disable him from flying. Now, be careful not to cut into a blood feather. You always want to check that first, which is full of blood. And then, that is how you groom a bird!
