Cutting an Onion 101

Cutting an Onion 101 - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. We are going to slice and chop an onion. The best way to cut an onion is not to cut the root too short. So, when we cut, we cut right through the root and as you notice the root holds the layer together. The knife should be sharp and you always cut forward, slicing an onion is done forward. The sharper your knife and the more you slice forward you will not be crying. If you chop an onion like this, you are actually crushing all of the pulp and the juices and this is what will make you cry. So, always cutting forward, like so. I want now to show you how to chop an onion also relatively quickly. Still with a sharp knife, making sure that your left hand is not in front of the blade, so holding the onion on top of it, we are going to cut through the onion but not all the way to the end. And we will cut as many slices as we can or we want. The more cuts, the smaller the onion will be chopped. So a bunch of horizontal cuts, so I am cutting backwards as I am slicing without crushing the onion and finally a slicing motion cutting forward, standing right over it so actually I am looking at what I am cutting, and you notice that the onion is already evenly cut. so, to recap always cutting forward.
