A crucial bridge in Hangzhou City, eastern China, has collapsed, sending an overloaded truck plummeting over the edge. Authorities said overloaded trucks that were illegally crossing the bridge had caused its collapse.

The collapse in the early hours of Friday morning left a 65-foot-long pit on one lane of a crucial bridge in east China's Hangzhou City.

The No. 3 Qiantang River Bridge connects Hangzhou with surrounding districts and the Hangzhou International Airport.

State media reported a truck was overloaded with steel plates. Authorities collected more than 100 tons of steel plates from the scene.

The truck driver managed to jump from the vehicle before it plunged to the ground. He was sent to a nearby hospital... his condition non life threatening.

No further deaths or injuries have been reported.

Nearby residents reported a sound like an earthquake as the bridge collapsed.

The government says trucks are forbidden from crossing the bridge.

Traffic on both lanes of the bridge resumed by about 10a.m.
