Parenting: Learning Basic Skills - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. First, commit to making parenting a priority. As I said to a dad recently, your return on investment is tremendous if you really commit to being a parent and putting your effort there. So, making it a priority means choosing the kids first in whatever situation you possibly can. Second, you want to get a really god parenting book. Look around until you find one that sounds like you and really study what the author has to say. Third, talk to trusted friends and family members. If they have good advice for you, you'll be really really happy to carry on conversations on ongoing basis and they might have the same kind of values that you have. But if they don't, you might want to think about hiring a parent coach. Third, you might want to go to classes that your school district sets up. Community education often holds really excellent parenting classes and they hire trained people who are skilled in their area to teach those classes so that's a really really good source of parenting information as well. And fifth, go inside and ask your inner voice what feels right about taking care of your kids, because really, we hardly ever learn from anybody to trust ourselves in this society, so if you can just think in terms of the fact that you know your child better than anyone else and you are the one who has the most invested in that child then you are with that child the most. You are the expert on your own child so your inner voice has a lot of wisdom for you. It's a really great resource.
