Roland Jahn has been appointed the new head of the Stasi archives. Dealing with the records of the East German secret police still employs a workforce of 1,800 people. A journalist and activist, Jahn protested against the expulsion of dissident singer Wolf Biermann in the mid-1970s and publicly supported the Polish anti-communist Solidarity movement. In '83 he was himself expelled to West Germany.
