X Factor winner Matt Cardle is Xmas No1

X Factor winner Matt Cardle has done what Joe McElderry couldn't last year - he's scored the Christmas number one with his debut single When We Collide.

In the six days since the 27-year-old former painter and decorator won the show, he sold 439,000 copies of the Biffy Clyro cover.

He sold 300,000 more than his nearest rival Rihanna, who's at number two with What's My Name.

In third place was the 1963 classic Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen which anti-X Factor campaigners were hoping to get to number one in a bid to stop winners of the reality show ruling the top spot at Christmas.

The same campaign was successful in 2009 when rap metal act Rage Against The Machine snatched the title from Joe McElderry.

Of his number one victory Matt Cardle said: "I can't believe it. As if winning wasn't enough. I honestly didn't think I'd even make it on to the live shows, let alone win and now be the Christmas number one.

"I can't even begin to describe how if feels. It's nuts, crackers and crazy. To think that many people have supported me and bought the record is absolutely mind-blowing."

Only the charity single Helping Haiti exceeded Cardle's one-week total this year, racking up 453,000 sales in February.
