Two students dead after car mounts pavement

Two students died after they were hit by a car which mounted the pavement in Glasgow.

Friends Mhairi Convy, 18, and Laura Stewart, 20, were walking on North Hanover Street when it the Range Rover lost control, mounted the kerb and struck them, police said.

A 36-year-old pedestrian was also injured.

Ms Convy, of Lennoxtown and Ms Stewart, of Cumbernauld, were taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary but died.

The pair were students of the College of Commerce in Glasgow.

The male pedestrian and the 50-year-old male driver of the Range Rover were taken to Glasgow's Western Infirmary where hospital staff said both were in a "stable" condition.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information from any witnesses to the incident, which happened at around 11am at the junction of North Hanover Street and Killermont Street, near to the city's Buchanan bus station.
