Does meditation have a place in the military?

According to an article in The Huffington Post, meditation may help soldiers do more than cope with stress. It may also have the potential to help them perform their duties more effectively.

Portable MP3 players loaded with guided imagery audio tracks were sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with the goal of helping them cope better with stress and sleep issues.

The active duty soldiers not only liked the players, but service people in resilience training reported needing to achieve a state of "calm, detached focus" to fulfill roles the rest of us wouldn't dare--roles like bomb defuser, sniper or special ops. Given that meditation is intended to achieve that exact state of mind and being, it's possible that meditation may enhance soldiers' performance during active duty.
