India stadium bridge collapses injuring nineteen

At least 19 people have been injured after a foot bridge collapsed near the main Commonwealth Games stadium in New Delhi.

Reports say that an entire bridge near gate number three of the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium fell down, just days before atheltics are due to start arriving.

There had already been threats that next month's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi may be called off following shocking conditions in the athletes' village.

Team leaders from England, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, Australia and Canada have all expressed "grave concerns" over the accommodation for the 6,500 team members and said some was "unsafe and unfit for human habitation".

Commonwealth Games Scotland released a statement confirming the crisis: "Representation has been made to the Commonwealth Games Federation to make a realistic decision as to at what point and under what conditions they would determine whether the Games will be able to go ahead should the village issues not be resolved."

The Scottish team were given other accommodation after complaining but say a major cleaning and maintenance programme is required:

"However many of the other blocks in the residential zone still remain in a highly unsatisfactory state," said their statement.

The Games start on October 3rd and Commonwealth Games England said although they remain optimistic the event can go ahead there is a need for "urgent" work with things such as plumbing and electrics.

New Zealand chef de mission Dave Currie confirmed the facilities were below standard.

He said: "The way things are looking, it's not up to scratch.

"The reality is that if the village is not ready and athletes can't come, the implications are that it's not going to happen," he said.
