Overloaded bridge collapses in Vietnam, killing at least 7 and injuring 37

A suspension bridge collapsed in Vietnam on Monday, killing at least seven people and injuring 37.

According to local news website baodautu.vn, more than 40 mourners were crossing the bridge in Lai Chau province at 8:30 a.m, transporting the coffin of a village leader to a graveyard.

After had mourners had crossed one-third of the 54 metre-long bridge, cables on one side broke. The group, along with the coffin, fell about 20 metres into the rocky stream below.

At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded, with 23 of them suffering serious injuries.

Officials said the bridge was overloaded as it only had a capacity of 1.5 tonnes. The bridge had only been in use for one year.
