Overjet is the protrusion of teeth in layman language. This condition arises when the upper teeth are located too far in front of the lower row of teeth. Normally the lower and upper front teeth should be touching upon closure leaving no space or overjet. Shelby dentist explains the classification of overjet as positive and negative overjet. If the top teeth are behind the lower teeth then it is called as negative overjet and if the upper teeth are ahead of the lower teeth then it is called positive overjet. According to Shelby dentist overjet may develop due many reasons like thumb sucking in early childhood, crowding of teeth may push out the top incisor teeth or push in the bottom incisor teeth. Skeletal disharmony where either the upper jaw is overdeveloped or the lower jaw is under developed is also a reason for overjet. Overjet pushes the upper teeth out of the mouth as a result the aesthetic value and symmetry of the face of a person may be a cause of concern for the patient. These teeth are prone to be lost or fractured in an accident as they are vulnerable to risk. Shelby dentist suggests various treatments for patients suffering from this disorder but the age and severity of the problem has to be taken into account before chalking out a treatment plan for the patient. People with severe overjet and high age may be suggested a surgery of jaw to correct this disorder. Other orthodontic methods and equipment like palatal expanders, headgears, functional appliances, rubber bands etc. can do the trick to bring back the teeth to their proper position. As this problem may lead to premature wearing out of the teeth and prevents proper functioning of the front teeth it is best to consult Shelby dentist before people start making fun of your unattractive smile or one or more teeth are lost in trauma.
