Lindsay Lohan escapes arrest

Lindsay Lohan has been given a lifeline. The star will not face arrest when she returns to the US after posting $100,000 bail (£70,000).

A judge ordered the detention of the Mean Girls actress after she failed to show up to a court hearing.

Lohan was due in court in the States to give a progress report stemming from two arrests in 2007.

The star's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said Lohan was unable to attend after her passport was stolen at the Cannes Film Festival.

But her no-show means more conditions have also been imposed on her probation including a ban on drinking, wearing an alcohol monitoring bracelet and taking weekly drug tests.

As a result of the bail a judge has now recalled the arrest warrant for the 23-year-old, but she will have to attend another hearing to see if she has violated her probation. A date has not yet been set.

Lohan's troubles stem from 2007 when she pleaded guilty to drink driving and using cocaine. She was sentenced to one day in jail and community service and also made several trips to rehab in the same year.
