U.N. Secretary General Says Cyprus Solution Within Reach

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited Cyprus on a recent multi-country trip. He was encouraged by the diplomatic progress he saw in there during a U.N Security Council meeting.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon briefed the U.N. Security Council on the diplomatic progress in Cyprus.
[Ban Ki-moon, U.N. Secretary General]:
“I was also in Cyprus and I am encouraged by what I saw and heard.Leaders made good progress but talks need to go to farther and faster. My Special Advisor Alexander Downer will work to keep up the momentum of this Cypriot-led process. I do believe a situation is within reach. But it will require even more courage, compromise and commitment.”
The secretary general was on a trip to several countries, including Cyprus.
Cyprus was split in a Turkish invasion in 1974 after a Greek-inspired coup.
