North and South Korea to Meet U.N. Security Council

North and South Korea are planning to meet with the U.N. Security Council this week. The meetings will discuss the sinking of a South Korean naval ship that left 46 sailors dead.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been at an all time high since the South Korean warship, the Cheonan, was sunk in March, killing 46 sailors.

South Korea’s military say a North Korean submarine torpedoed the ship.

Seoul is briefing the U.N Security Council on the findings of an international investigation into the sinking.

"Our team of international investigators plan to hold a briefing to 15 United Nations Security Council members at a meeting room at the United Nations Headquarters at 3pm New York time."

But Pyongyang has denied involvement in the Cheonan's sinking.

"North Korea, as a member country of the United Nations has asked for an opportunity to brief its stance, and it's our understanding that such an opportunity has been granted."

Analysts say neither side is ready to go to war, but see the possibility of more skirmishes in a disputed sea border.
