00:00The European Commission has fined tech giants Apple and Meta for failing to comply with its
00:07digital regulations. Apple received a €500 million fine for preventing app makers to
00:14point consumers to cheaper options outside of the app store. Meta, on the other hand,
00:19received a €200 million fine because it forced its users to choose between seeing ads or paying
00:25to avoid them. European Commissioner Teresa Ribera said the law called the Digital Market Act is
00:31crucial to ensure a level playing field for digital players. Ribera said that Apple and Meta fell short
00:38of complying with the act and instead have implemented measures that reinforces consumer
00:43dependence on their platforms. Apple announced it was going to lodge an appeal, claiming the European
00:49Commission is unfairly targeting the platform which they say is bad for the privacy of their users,
00:54as well as pushes them to give away their technology for free. Meta has been contacted
00:59for a comment but has not yet responded with a statement.
