00:05Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Easter Monday.
00:11Bells tolled in church towers across Rome after the announcement,
00:15which was read out by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican Camerlengo,
00:19from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.
00:23The Pope had suffered from a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia,
00:27for which he was hospitalized for five weeks.
00:30He emerged on Easter Sunday to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square
00:35and surprise them with a Popemobile ride through the piazza.
00:39The Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the first Latin American pontiff in history
00:44and charmed the world with his humble style and embrace of refugees and the poor.
00:49He signaled a very different tone for the papacy,
00:52stressing humility over hubris, adding women to decision-making roles in the church
00:57and welcoming the LGBTQ plus community.
01:09At 7.30 p.m. local time, Cardinal Gambetti led the rosary prayer
01:14to pray for the passing of Pope Francis.
01:16It was attended by cardinals and the hundreds of faithful
01:19who had gathered here throughout the day.
01:22Cardinal Gambetti said, quote,
01:24we all carry in our hearts the words that Pope Francis so often said to us,
01:28do not forget to pray for me.
01:31The atmosphere here was one of grief and mourning.
01:34The prayer ended with a long round of applause,
01:37with people chanting, long live Pope Francis.
01:39And at around 8 p.m. local time, the Vatican confirmed the Pope's cause of death,
01:46saying that Pope Francis died of a stroke and heart failure.

01:55Tributes have continued to pour in from around the world over the death of Pope Francis.

03:25Francis ignited hope for the poor and those suffering.

03:32after a long battle with double pneumonia.
03:35The death of a pope sets in motion a series of carefully orchestrated rites and rituals
03:47surrounding the pontiff's burial and electing a successor,
03:50a process known as the conclave.
03:54Following the pope's death, a nine-day mourning period follows.
03:58During this period, the College of Cardinals assembles in the Vatican,
04:01where they will be locked in the Sistine Chapel around 15 days after the pope's death,
04:06bound by secrecy as they elect a new pope.
04:10Immediately after an initial mass, the cardinals cast their first ballots.
04:15If no pope is elected, the ballots are burned
04:17and the process is repeated four times a day
04:19until one candidate receives a two-third majority.
04:22Black smoke signals an inconclusive vote.
04:28White smoke announces to the world that a new pope has been chosen.
04:34The new pope then emerges and gives his first blessing.
