Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen said on Friday (April 18) he met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran man mistakenly deported and being held in a prison in El Salvador, at a hotel after initial requests to meet with him were denied.
He accused the Trump administration of deliberately lying about the nature of Abrego Garcia’s case in an attempt to shift public attention away from the real issues.

00:00Si se puede. Si se puede.
00:02The people united. The people united.
00:10It's good to be home.
00:12Now we need to end the illegal abduction of Kilmar Arbego-Garcia and bring him home too.
00:21Now, the Trump administration wants to flat out lie about what this case is about.
00:32They want to change the subject. They want to make it about something else.
00:38And they are flouting the orders from the Federal District Court, the Fourth Circuit Court, and the Supreme Court to facilitate his return.
00:50And last night at about 6.40 p.m. El Salvador time, 8.45 p.m. here on the East Coast, I called Jennifer to tell her that I had met with Kilmar.
01:05And I told her what he said to me, which was first and foremost that he missed her and his family.
01:14And as he said that, you could see it here.
01:17Go down his sheet.
01:24So I say to the President of the Trump administration, if you want to make claims about Mr.
01:29Mr. Arbego-Garcia and MS-13, you should present them in the court, not over social media.
01:39Not at press conferences where you just rattle stuff off into the lengths that President Bukele will do to deceive people about what's going on.
01:51And it also shows the lengths that the Trump administration and the President will go to, because when he was asked about a reporter about this, he just went along for the ride.
02:01So the White House and the President have been lying about this case from the beginning.
02:08They've been trying to change the subject.
02:10Thank you all very much for being here.
