00:00If you haven't been dreaming, you're late for the dream.
00:03Run and get your dream, because it was never for your child only.
00:07It was for the both of you.
00:09And yours is different than your child.
00:12People say, oh my God, you're going to be so sad when Jelani leaves the nest.
00:15I said, no, I'm not.
00:16I'm going to turn the nest over and shake it.
00:18Because I want him.
00:20I want him to not only fly, but fall if you have to.
00:23Because I trust your wings.
00:24And I trust your get-up muscle.
00:26And give your child permission to fall.
00:28Because then they'll learn how to get up.
00:32And if they know how to get up, they'll run and leap more often.
00:35But if they live a life trying to avoid failing, they'll never really fly.
00:39Because flying also comes with the possibility of falling.
00:43I fly more than most because I fail more than most.
00:45And I trust my get-up more than most.
00:48It's that simple.
00:49If a child is leaving home, and when my son left home,
00:52he moved right up the road to Pasadena from L.A.
00:56And I could not get him to come home.
00:58He's like, son, come on.
00:59He's like, mom, I'm good.
01:00He was ready to fly.
01:02He's like, you taught me.
01:02I'm good.
01:03And so I had to realize that I had to reinvent myself as an adult child's parent.
01:11And so I begin to learn again.
01:12I'm learning how to be an adult child's parent.
01:15I have never done that before.
01:17And I keep saying, how do I dance with you as an adult child to respect your boundaries,
01:23respect your marriage, respect your choices, but be here when you need me.
