00:00:00On May 7th, 2019, just three days before graduation, shots were fired at STEM school
00:00:29in Douglas County, Colorado. The following report is based on police records, and most of the
00:00:34footage has never been seen before until now. Please note that while the following footage is
00:00:39intense, it does not show anyone being physically harmed or injured. The horror began almost at the
00:00:46end of the school day, just after 1.50 p.m. Countless additional calls to emergency services began to
00:00:52pour in. With each one, the situation appeared more dire.
00:00:57Where is the shooter? Room 107. Is it just a single shooter? Is it one person? No. As far as I know,
00:01:08but I don't know. Is the shooter down or is our shooter still shooting? What? We have still
00:01:13shot, yes. Every second counted. Officers from the police department,
00:01:18sheriff's department, and the closest SWAT team all deployed in force and raced for the school.
00:01:24Some of them didn't even have time to don protective gear, but rushed onwards all the same.
00:01:34No access? No? No access? Let's bust the f***ing window.
00:01:39Sure. Uh, here, here, here.
00:01:51Sure.
00:01:52I got your eyes in there you guys, your security, you see them moving, I got you, I got you,
00:02:15I got you, open, open.
00:02:17Elsewhere another group of law enforcement officials forced entry through a different door and were about to get a nasty surprise.
00:02:29Go, let's go. Go, go, go. You walk first, go. I got it, shield first, shield first.
00:02:36Where is it? Get on the ground, get on the ground!
00:02:45We have him? Look right there! Face down, don't worry, don't move!
00:02:49Despite two bullets narrowly missing the first responders, they didn't return fire, a decision that would later be proven wise.
00:02:57That's security, is it your security?
00:02:59Security, security!
00:03:00Where is the man at?
00:03:01Where is it at? Where is it at?
00:03:02He's in the projector room, he's in the English room, behind you, the first one on the right!
00:03:05On the right!
00:03:06Over here, first one on the right, over there!
00:03:08He had the gun, it's over behind my back!
00:03:10He's cuffed right there!
00:03:11Which one?
00:03:12Right there, the one cuffed!
00:03:13This one?
00:03:14Yes!
00:03:15How many do we think we have?
00:03:16Two?
00:03:17Five!
00:03:18Two?
00:03:19This is one of them?
00:03:20I don't know.
00:03:21He's the one I pulled out, he had the gun in his hand.
00:03:23I hear her!
00:03:24He's thrown out, he's got him.
00:03:25Pat him down now.
00:03:26I have bullets in my pocket.
00:03:27You better f***ing start talking, how many other people are in here?
00:03:29Roll over.
00:03:30Two of us.
00:03:31I'm just going to move up.
00:03:32Where the f*** is the other one?
00:03:33What does he look like?
00:03:34What kind of guns is he?
00:03:35I don't know what he is.
00:03:36I don't know what he is.
00:03:37Just the pants.
00:03:38Just the pants.
00:03:39He has purple hair.
00:03:40The scene in the hall seemed like a nightmare.
00:03:42What was happening inside the classrooms was even worse.
00:03:45More than 1,000 students, from kindergarteners all the way to 12th graders, were trapped,
00:03:51terrified, and in mortal danger.
00:03:54Some of them took the chance to film what they may have thought would be their last moments alive.
00:03:59Lost.
00:04:00Out of sight.
00:04:02Police.
00:04:03Lockdown.
00:04:04When law enforcement enters the first classroom, the horrific scene they found was something
00:04:10straight out of a horror movie.
00:04:12I got the door.
00:04:13I got the door.
00:04:14Lose your hands.
00:04:15Back snort.
00:04:16Back straight door, it's open.
00:04:17We have a shot.
00:04:18We have a shot.
00:04:19We have a shot.
00:04:21Let's move.
00:04:22I got a shot.
00:04:23Who's shot?
00:04:24Anybody heard him?
00:04:25Anybody, pick him up, pick him up, pick him up, pick him up.
00:04:27We need to send up a warm phone.
00:04:40Let's do a good carry.
00:04:42I need help.
00:04:43Good carry.
00:04:49It's going to be tough.
00:04:50Set him up.
00:04:51Set him up.
00:04:51Set him up.
00:04:52All right, you get that arm.
00:04:54I got this side.
00:04:55Where's the other shooter?
00:04:56Is somebody covering us?
00:04:57The shooter behind us.
00:04:58Let's go.
00:04:59Pick him up.
00:04:59Pick him up.
00:05:00Pick him up.
00:05:01Elsewhere, as police urgently secured the first suspect,
00:05:04it quickly became clear that something was off.
00:05:07The suspect's behavior would only become stranger
00:05:10as the interaction continued.
00:05:12Roll over.
00:05:13I don't know.
00:05:14I got you right here.
00:05:15Okay, I got a 9mm magazine.
00:05:16Get in the hand.
00:05:18I don't know yet.
00:05:19Set him up.
00:05:21Got anything else on you?
00:05:22Just my thoughts.
00:05:23Just your phones?
00:05:24Nothing else.
00:05:26What?
00:05:27I've been exposed.
00:05:29Been exposed to what?
00:05:32No.
00:05:32To what?
00:05:33I'm trans, and my crush just flew over here.
00:05:35Yeah, I need it.
00:05:37And you're what?
00:05:38I'm transgender, and I've lost everyone.
00:05:43That's at least your worries right now.
00:05:44Oh, yeah?
00:05:45It has been shot.
00:05:46Yeah, we know.
00:05:47We're working on it.
00:05:49What the officers don't know yet
00:05:51is that they've only scratched the surface
00:05:52and that there is still another shooter
00:05:55lurking inside the school.
00:05:57The victim was identified by his classmates as Kendrick.
00:06:01He had been shot twice,
00:06:03but getting him to safety and emergency medical personnel
00:06:05turned out to be easier said than done.
00:06:08Put the legs down.
00:06:10Put the legs down.
00:06:11Get the upper body up.
00:06:12Upper body up now.
00:06:14Go, Mike.
00:06:14Go, go.
00:06:15God damn it.
00:06:17It's fine.
00:06:17Lift.
00:06:18Go.
00:06:18It's not how we carry anybody.
00:06:20He's not going anywhere.
00:06:21Put the legs down now.
00:06:24Get his upper body up.
00:06:26Carry him like he's been tough.
00:06:28Come on, bro.
00:06:29It's not the way it's going to work.
00:06:32I got it.
00:06:32I got it for what he did.
00:06:34As the race to save Kendrick's life continued,
00:06:37the officer guarding the suspect
00:06:38turned to the two witnesses in the hall
00:06:40for further information.
00:06:41How many victims do you think we have?
00:06:43Did you see?
00:06:43Did you shoot at all?
00:06:53I shot one round and I realized...
00:06:55Did you hit anybody?
00:06:56No, I realized it was one of your guys
00:06:58and I dropped my gun.
00:06:59I got you.
00:07:00That's right.
00:07:01The security guard had been the one to fire at police.
00:07:04In addition to the chaos at the school,
00:07:06more frantic calls were coming in,
00:07:09not only from students and teachers,
00:07:10but now parents who had heard about the situation.
00:07:14My son is at STEM Academy
00:07:16and he just texted me
00:07:17that there were gunshots in his school
00:07:19and he really scared
00:07:21and told me all the cops.
00:07:22Okay, do not go to the school, okay?
00:07:25There's a lot of police activity.
00:07:27You need to stay away from the school.
00:07:29This is true.
00:07:30Ma'am, you need to stay away from the school, okay?
00:07:33Okay, okay.
00:07:34All right.
00:07:35Not all of the parents got the message, though,
00:07:37and began to show up to the still active scene.
00:07:40Get in the cars, get away.
00:07:42I don't care where you go, just go away.
00:07:45Closer to the school,
00:07:46other officers had finally succeeded
00:07:48in moving Kendrick outside,
00:07:50only to face a new problem.
00:07:52I got a chest...
00:07:52Are we a medic close?
00:07:54We have any medics.
00:07:55I got a chest seal right here.
00:07:57He's right here.
00:07:58You gotta start treating him on a f***ing home.
00:08:00I'm gonna get a medic!
00:08:02We're a medic!
00:08:04Let him out!
00:08:05Let him out!
00:08:06While tensions run high
00:08:07in this life-and-death situation,
00:08:10officers still have to wrangle
00:08:11to find the second shooter.
00:08:13In situations like these,
00:08:15paramedics usually do not enter the scene
00:08:17immediately for their own safety.
00:08:19SWAT medics usually make contact faster,
00:08:22but at this time,
00:08:23they were still on the way.
00:08:25Okay, ready?
00:08:27Hold on.
00:08:28We got to go one at a time.
00:08:30We need to get him at least in recovery.
00:08:32There's not much else we can do for him without fire.
00:08:34Let's get him on the side this way.
00:08:35Inside, another group of officers
00:08:37came across a second victim.
00:08:39Thankfully, this injured student
00:08:41was still conscious.
00:08:43Okay, just breathe, okay?
00:08:45Ready?
00:08:47Okay, guys, we got a scene here.
00:08:49We got a scene here.
00:08:50It's a 106.
00:08:51We're just working.
00:08:52Armed escort.
00:08:53We're coming out!
00:08:53We got you.
00:08:54Where's the medic?
00:08:55Medics!
00:08:57Left, left!
00:08:58A second victim
00:08:59was not the only thing police found.
00:09:01A boy with purple hair
00:09:02matching the description
00:09:03of the second shooter
00:09:04turned up in one of the classrooms.
00:09:07You just got one in here?
00:09:09Yes.
00:09:10What's up, Mike?
00:09:11I don't know.
00:09:11What's up, Mike?
00:09:12What is your name?
00:09:13Devin Erickson.
00:09:14Who?
00:09:14Devin Erickson.
00:09:15Devin Erickson?
00:09:15Devin Erickson.
00:09:16With a D-E-V-O-N-E-R-I-C-K-S-O-N.
00:09:19Do you have him or somebody else?
00:09:20Because I know what he had on him.
00:09:22What?
00:09:23And he's transgender,
00:09:24so he's going to have a binder on
00:09:26underneath a black binder.
00:09:28And this is Alec?
00:09:29This is Alec.
00:09:30A-L-E-Z.
00:09:33Alec McKinley.
00:09:35Devin was 18 years old,
00:09:37but at 16,
00:09:38Alec was still a minor.
00:09:40Speaking of Alec,
00:09:41out in the hall,
00:09:42police witnessed
00:09:43increasingly strange behavior.
00:09:45Stop!
00:09:46Stop what?
00:09:48They won't stop talking!
00:09:52Stop!
00:09:53Are there only two of you?
00:09:55Yes.
00:09:55You're f***ing positive.
00:09:57Yes.
00:09:58You're telling me to run.
00:09:59What?
00:10:00You're telling me to run.
00:10:01Put your foot on me.
00:10:02You're not going anywhere.
00:10:03Trust me.
00:10:03You move something,
00:10:04you're going to get broken.
00:10:05You understand that?
00:10:06Okay.
00:10:06You sit right the f*** there.
00:10:08Police would learn more
00:10:09about what to make
00:10:10of this strange outburst later.
00:10:12In that moment,
00:10:13Alec provided the first clue
00:10:14in a series of increasingly
00:10:16harrowing items of evidence
00:10:17investigators would discover.
00:10:19a pink Eiffel 6S.
00:10:21What about it?
00:10:23Target and I have videos.
00:10:25Videos of what?
00:10:27Are you making Devin
00:10:27do all this?
00:10:29In the other room,
00:10:30Devin was telling police
00:10:31the exact same thing.
00:10:32He was making me
00:10:33give him a bunch of stuff
00:10:34and then it was me.
00:10:35Okay.
00:10:35I was just supposed
00:10:36to wash the door.
00:10:37He said it was the only way
00:10:38he was going to let me live.
00:10:39I have proof.
00:10:42My house might be on fire
00:10:44as well.
00:10:44It's next to Thunder Ridge.
00:10:45He tried to light
00:10:46my mom's car on fire.
00:10:47There's animals in the house.
00:10:51Hello.
00:10:53He sent somebody
00:10:54to his house too.
00:10:56What's that?
00:10:57He sent somebody to his house.
00:10:58He said he tried
00:10:59to light his house on fire.
00:11:00My pets are in there.
00:11:02They didn't want to hurt.
00:11:05We're going to move these guys.
00:11:12Here in a minute.
00:11:13Just stand by.
00:11:14We're going to move them out.
00:11:16All right.
00:11:17Christian, I need to know
00:11:19any other people
00:11:20involved in this.
00:11:21Any other people involved?
00:11:21I don't think so,
00:11:22but there's a chest rig
00:11:23in my car though
00:11:24that he had.
00:11:24I don't know if he put
00:11:25anything in the pockets.
00:11:27All right.
00:11:27Okay.
00:11:28We ready to go?
00:11:28Yeah.
00:11:29Alec was also ready
00:11:30for transport.
00:11:31We're ready?
00:11:32All right.
00:11:32Hold on just a sec.
00:11:47Coming out.
00:11:50Coming out.
00:11:51Alec and Devin
00:11:52might have gotten to leave,
00:11:54but for law enforcement
00:11:55and everyone else
00:11:56at the school,
00:11:57things were only
00:11:58just beginning.
00:11:59The rest of the school
00:12:00still needed to be cleared
00:12:01and the students evacuated.
00:12:04Police, open the door.
00:12:05Open the door.
00:12:06It's also been cleared.
00:12:08Hands up.
00:12:09Hands up.
00:12:09Hands up.
00:12:09I need a key access
00:12:11to check the...
00:12:12Hands up.
00:12:13Hands up.
00:12:14Hands up.
00:12:15Everyone,
00:12:16keep your hands up.
00:12:16You're okay.
00:12:17You guys are doing okay.
00:12:18Thank you, sir.
00:12:19Hands up.
00:12:20You're okay.
00:12:20Keep moving.
00:12:21Come with me.
00:12:22We're going to look over that way.
00:12:23We're going to look over this way.
00:12:24We're going to go this way.
00:12:24Everyone over there.
00:12:25Look over there.
00:12:26We're going to go over there.
00:12:27See those guys waving over there?
00:12:28We need you to go over there.
00:12:29Nine victims in total
00:12:31were identified.
00:12:33The uninjured students
00:12:34were evacuated
00:12:35to a nearby rec center
00:12:36to unite with their families.
00:12:38Officers would remain
00:12:39stationed at the school as well.
00:12:41Those on scene
00:12:42tried to make sense
00:12:43of the situation
00:12:44as they kept the scene secure.
00:12:46I guess the dad
00:12:46had like purple hair
00:12:47or whatever.
00:12:48Probably playing the joker role.
00:12:51Devin,
00:12:51the suspect with purple hair,
00:12:53continued to exhibit
00:12:54signs of distress
00:12:55as he arrived
00:12:56at the police station.
00:12:57He waited in an interrogation room
00:12:59while the police dealt
00:13:00with his companion, Alec.
00:13:02Alec's arrival
00:13:03and interrogation
00:13:04did not go nearly as smoothly.
00:13:06At only 16 years old,
00:13:08Alec's mother
00:13:09needed to be contacted
00:13:10before questioning
00:13:11could take place.
00:13:12But this was not
00:13:13the only issue.
00:13:14The bullet was collected
00:13:24and Alec's hands
00:13:25were also placed
00:13:26in paper bags
00:13:27to preserve evidence
00:13:28like gunshot residue
00:13:29for crime scene technicians.
00:13:31After these tasks
00:13:32were complete,
00:13:33it wasn't long
00:13:34before Alec's mother,
00:13:35Morgan,
00:13:36was brought in.
00:13:37It's not you.
00:13:49You know this.
00:13:51It's not you.
00:13:55You know this.
00:13:57Do you hear me?
00:13:59Do you know this?
00:14:00Has your name
00:14:10officially been changed
00:14:11to Alec?
00:14:12No.
00:14:12It's Maya.
00:14:13Okay.
00:14:14But I will call you Alec.
00:14:16Because Alec was a minor,
00:14:17the detectives read
00:14:18the required Miranda rights
00:14:19to both Alec and Morgan.
00:14:22Alec remained willing
00:14:23to talk.
00:14:24Do you agree
00:14:24to answer questions
00:14:25with me
00:14:26without a lawyer?
00:14:27Okay.
00:14:28Okay.
00:14:30Mom,
00:14:31can you sign here
00:14:31saying that
00:14:33he's waiving his rights?
00:14:37What is happening?
00:14:39He's going to talk to me
00:14:40without a lawyer present.
00:14:45So,
00:14:46you also have a right
00:14:47mom can stay in,
00:14:48mom can leave.
00:14:49She can leave.
00:14:50The detectives
00:14:51gave Alec and Morgan
00:14:53a moment
00:14:53to talk things over
00:14:54and come to an agreement
00:14:55on how to proceed.
00:14:58I have nothing.
00:15:00Yes,
00:15:01you do.
00:15:02You're feeling
00:15:02all my glasses.
00:15:04It doesn't matter.
00:15:05It doesn't matter.
00:15:07You know that.
00:15:09I know that's stupid.
00:15:11You just tell me
00:15:12all the truth.
00:15:15Everything.
00:15:17And I'm going to
00:15:19give you something
00:15:19because apparently
00:15:21I'm not doing enough.
00:15:23This isn't for us.
00:15:24Just know that
00:15:25my work for you
00:15:26is unconditional.
00:15:26They eventually agreed
00:15:28that Alec would
00:15:29converse with
00:15:30the detectives alone
00:15:31and Morgan signed off
00:15:32on Alec's waiver
00:15:33of rights
00:15:33before stepping out.
00:15:35A crime scene technician
00:15:36entered next
00:15:37to collect swabs
00:15:38of Alec's hands
00:15:39to test for gunshot residue
00:15:40and take booking photos.
00:15:42Make sure someone
00:15:43watches my mom.
00:15:45Someone's with her.
00:15:47Okay.
00:15:47According to police reports
00:15:49and what Alec later
00:15:49shared with the investigators,
00:15:52Alec's mother
00:15:52suffered from
00:15:53stress-induced seizures
00:15:54and other medical conditions.
00:15:56When the CSI technician
00:15:58had finished her work,
00:15:59the detectives returned
00:16:00to get to the heart
00:16:01of the matter.
00:16:02Are you sure
00:16:03you're physically okay?
00:16:04I'm physically.
00:16:04Okay.
00:16:05And I just need to ask,
00:16:06is there one or two of you?
00:16:08Is there a third out there?
00:16:09No.
00:16:10That helped you?
00:16:11Yeah.
00:16:11So it's the two of you?
00:16:11There's two of us.
00:16:12Several rooms over,
00:16:13Devin was also prepped
00:16:14for interrogation.
00:16:16However,
00:16:16the conversation police
00:16:18were about to have
00:16:18would not go anything
00:16:20like they expected.
00:16:21You're right.
00:16:22You're right.
00:16:22I know all my rates.
00:16:23I just want you guys
00:16:24to get them.
00:16:25Okay.
00:16:26That's why I'm talking
00:16:26so much.
00:16:27All right.
00:16:28How long have you
00:16:29known Alec for?
00:16:29I've known Alec
00:16:30for really just this semester.
00:16:33With Alec,
00:16:34the detectives began
00:16:35with a similar line
00:16:36of questioning.
00:16:37How long have you
00:16:38gone there?
00:16:39Since the beginning
00:16:40of this year.
00:16:40How has 10 been?
00:16:44Probably the worst experience.
00:16:46Tell me why.
00:16:48Well,
00:16:49on top of being transgender,
00:16:51I got a lot of crap
00:16:52for that.
00:16:52How long have you
00:16:53been Alec?
00:16:55I came out
00:16:56to my friends
00:16:57in about 8th grade.
00:16:588th grade?
00:16:59Okay.
00:16:59Has the transition
00:17:00been smooth
00:17:01or has it been rough
00:17:02or what's been
00:17:02going on with that?
00:17:03It's been really hard.
00:17:04Tell me why
00:17:04it's been really hard.
00:17:06I just have to live
00:17:07with the fact
00:17:07that no one sees me
00:17:08for me
00:17:09and I will never
00:17:10be who I want to be
00:17:12anything.
00:17:13I'm not a boy.
00:17:14I'm not a girl.
00:17:15I'm just
00:17:15nothing.
00:17:18So I've been
00:17:20ready for this
00:17:22for a couple
00:17:23weeks now
00:17:24and I
00:17:26texted Devin
00:17:27and I said
00:17:27let's hang out
00:17:28basically
00:17:29and then
00:17:30I was talking to him
00:17:30about it
00:17:31and he was like
00:17:32why?
00:17:33Like,
00:17:33what's your motive?
00:17:34And I was talking
00:17:35about how
00:17:35I know what people
00:17:37say about me.
00:17:38I'm not dumb.
00:17:39I gave them
00:17:41a reason to be scared
00:17:42because they need
00:17:42to think about
00:17:45how what you
00:17:46really say
00:17:46can drive someone
00:17:47to do this.
00:17:48Alec agreed
00:17:49to let the police
00:17:50download data
00:17:51from the pink iPhone
00:17:52mentioned earlier
00:17:52including social media
00:17:54apps.
00:17:55The most information
00:17:56was found on Snapchat
00:17:57and told investigators
00:17:59that there was
00:17:59much more to the case
00:18:00than first met the eye.
00:18:03Devin's electronics
00:18:03and social media
00:18:04were also under
00:18:05the microscope
00:18:06but the most obvious
00:18:07red flags
00:18:08were found
00:18:08on Alec's accounts.
00:18:12When I go to jail
00:18:13can you keep my streaks?
00:18:15Don't you just love it
00:18:16when you're having
00:18:17a wonderful day
00:18:17and depression
00:18:18comes just
00:18:18so neat.
00:18:19Then take the trash out.
00:18:24This was just
00:18:25the tip of the iceberg
00:18:26in regards to
00:18:27what investigators
00:18:27unearthed
00:18:28on Alec's electronics.
00:18:30Before doing
00:18:31a deep dive
00:18:31into Alec's social media
00:18:32though,
00:18:33Devin continued
00:18:34to relay the events
00:18:35that took place
00:18:36that morning.
00:18:37I'm going back
00:18:38to this morning
00:18:40you'd have to
00:18:41see Alec.
00:18:43Yeah,
00:18:43when did you
00:18:44first see him?
00:18:45My psychology class
00:18:46and I told
00:18:47Miss Evil
00:18:47that I didn't
00:18:48have my backpack
00:18:49because he wanted
00:18:49me to lie about it
00:18:50so that I could
00:18:51leave
00:18:52and then that's
00:18:53when I went
00:18:53to the house
00:18:53the first time.
00:18:54I met up with
00:18:55David as well.
00:18:56Who's David?
00:18:57He's probably
00:18:58one of my friends
00:18:58since 6th grade.
00:19:00David confirmed
00:19:01that he met up
00:19:02with Devin
00:19:02that morning
00:19:02around 8.30.
00:19:04I was giving him
00:19:05hugs because of
00:19:05how happy I was
00:19:06feeling that he
00:19:08was doing so good.
00:19:09David stated
00:19:10that Devin
00:19:11used substances
00:19:12and had apparently
00:19:12been doing so
00:19:13with increasing
00:19:14frequency over
00:19:15the last semester.
00:19:16And recently
00:19:17it's just been
00:19:17getting worse.
00:19:18His drug use
00:19:19has been getting
00:19:20more significant
00:19:22I want to say
00:19:22in the past month.
00:19:24David would have
00:19:25more insight
00:19:25to share later.
00:19:27However,
00:19:28it looks like
00:19:28Devin may not
00:19:29have been the only
00:19:30one with a
00:19:30substance abuse
00:19:31problem.
00:19:32Do you know
00:19:32if he was on
00:19:33medications or anything?
00:19:34He used to have
00:19:35them but I think
00:19:35he was saying
00:19:36that his mom
00:19:37took them away.
00:19:38Okay.
00:19:39So he was
00:19:40on the cocaine
00:19:41you know.
00:19:41Devin also shared
00:19:42that someone
00:19:43had spread
00:19:44an explicit rumor
00:19:45at Stim
00:19:45about Alec
00:19:46which had been
00:19:47very upsetting.
00:19:48Still,
00:19:49Devin said
00:19:49he'd never
00:19:50expected Alec
00:19:50to take such
00:19:51horrific action.
00:19:53While speaking
00:19:53with detectives
00:19:54Alec reported
00:19:55that life
00:19:55at home
00:19:56was just
00:19:56as tumultuous
00:19:57as it was
00:19:57at school.
00:19:59According to
00:19:59Alec and Morgan
00:20:00Alec's father
00:20:01Jose was
00:20:02no longer
00:20:02in the picture
00:20:03and currently
00:20:0414 family members
00:20:06were all living
00:20:06under the same roof.
00:20:08Alec's mom
00:20:09Morgan consented
00:20:10to let police
00:20:10execute a search
00:20:11warrant on the
00:20:12family house.
00:20:14However,
00:20:14nothing was found
00:20:15in regards
00:20:16to the shooting.
00:20:17All the evidence
00:20:18it seemed
00:20:18would be found
00:20:19in the school
00:20:20and witness statements.
00:20:22I'm sorry
00:20:22if I'm not
00:20:23totally clear-headed
00:20:23I'm still trying
00:20:24to wrap my mind
00:20:25around his life
00:20:25totally hosed now.
00:20:27Totally hosed.
00:20:28In the interrogation
00:20:29room with Devin
00:20:30he told police
00:20:31more about
00:20:32what led up
00:20:32to the violent
00:20:33outburst
00:20:33at STEM school.
00:20:35Last night
00:20:35he told me
00:20:36not to come
00:20:37to school tomorrow
00:20:38and I saved it
00:20:38and I wanted
00:20:39to save my friends
00:20:40because I have
00:20:41a lot of friends
00:20:41at that school.
00:20:44And then
00:20:45I saved that message
00:20:47and then I was
00:20:48going to tell my friends
00:20:49it saved on Snapchat
00:20:50on my phone
00:20:50and I was going to
00:20:51tell my friends
00:20:52and that's when
00:20:52he started threatening
00:20:53me.
00:20:53What else
00:20:54did he tell you?
00:20:55He told me
00:20:55that he was
00:20:57just super
00:20:58he wanted to
00:20:59get revenge
00:21:00on a lot of people.
00:21:02He told me
00:21:03he was considering
00:21:03killing his mom
00:21:04and his siblings
00:21:05too
00:21:05because he hates
00:21:07them
00:21:07but
00:21:08he didn't do that.
00:21:11I kept telling
00:21:12him not to
00:21:12and he said
00:21:17he was going to
00:21:18kill me
00:21:19if I told anyone
00:21:19and the only way
00:21:20I'd let him
00:21:21live is if he
00:21:22helped me.
00:21:23Back with Alec
00:21:23the police asked
00:21:24more about the
00:21:25planning process
00:21:26and Devin's role.
00:21:28If Devin was
00:21:28as innocent
00:21:29as he claimed
00:21:30the detectives
00:21:30needed to understand
00:21:31why he had a
00:21:32firearm in his
00:21:33hands.
00:21:34Had you guys
00:21:34talked about this
00:21:35last night?
00:21:37Yeah.
00:21:38He was saying
00:21:38something on a
00:21:39Snapchat text message
00:21:40conversation.
00:21:41Tell me about that.
00:21:44Basically we had
00:21:45come up with a
00:21:46code name for this
00:21:46and we would joke
00:21:48about it all the time.
00:21:50Gamerboat is
00:21:51what we called it
00:21:51and specifically
00:21:53what were you
00:21:55calling Gamerboat?
00:21:56What was the
00:21:56code word?
00:21:57The
00:21:57like a gun
00:22:00was our
00:22:02code word for
00:22:03or Gamerboat
00:22:04was our code word
00:22:05for a gun.
00:22:06There was another
00:22:07code word Devin
00:22:08and Alec had too.
00:22:09The meaning behind
00:22:10it and the
00:22:11implications of
00:22:12its use would
00:22:13change everything.
00:22:14It was like
00:22:15are you down
00:22:16to like jokingly
00:22:18I was like
00:22:18are you down?
00:22:19And he was like
00:22:20haha that's funny
00:22:21like haha yeah
00:22:23but really it was
00:22:24like I wasn't
00:22:26kidding and he
00:22:28like was ready
00:22:30to tell the office
00:22:31or someone what
00:22:32was going on but
00:22:33I was like you'd
00:22:34really do that to
00:22:35your best friend.
00:22:36Like this is what
00:22:37best friends are for.
00:22:38Like you're with me
00:22:40till the end and
00:22:41this is the end.
00:22:42I didn't think he
00:22:43was really going to
00:22:44do it.
00:22:44I never thought
00:22:45he could actually
00:22:46do that because
00:22:46he never seemed
00:22:47like that crazy.
00:22:48He didn't seem
00:22:49like evil.
00:22:49He just seemed
00:22:50sad and like
00:22:50lonely.
00:22:51At school I'm
00:22:52a completely
00:22:54different person.
00:22:55No one would
00:22:55ever have guessed
00:22:56this from me.
00:22:58What kind of person
00:22:59are you at school?
00:23:00I'm I try to be
00:23:02friends with everyone.
00:23:03I try to I'm a
00:23:05people pleaser
00:23:05and I kind of let
00:23:07people walk all
00:23:08over me.
00:23:12Don't laugh at me.
00:23:14Walk walk walk.
00:23:16Pose.
00:23:17Got any penis
00:23:18enlargement pills?
00:23:23As they continued
00:23:24investigating police
00:23:25had to wonder what
00:23:26changed in Alex's
00:23:27approach.
00:23:28Morgan McKinney
00:23:29Alex mom had her
00:23:30own theory.
00:23:31All these years
00:23:32I've never told my
00:23:34kid not to hang
00:23:35out with a certain
00:23:35somebody and about
00:23:37three months ago
00:23:38I told him to
00:23:39stop hanging out
00:23:40with the
00:23:40and then Devin
00:23:43Devin
00:23:44I don't know
00:23:45if it's relevant
00:23:48at this time but
00:23:49and just
00:23:50different you know
00:23:52and I was like
00:23:53I just don't like
00:23:54the way he's
00:23:54rubbing off on you
00:23:55and you know
00:23:58I was like you
00:23:58need to focus on
00:23:59you right now.
00:24:00Alex's Snapchat
00:24:01revealed the side
00:24:02of Devin that
00:24:03Morgan might have
00:24:04found concerning.
00:24:05just how much of a role
00:24:30Devin's influence played
00:24:31on the stem attack
00:24:32would come out
00:24:33in due time.
00:24:34For now though
00:24:35Alec offered
00:24:36this explanation.
00:24:37Really there was like
00:24:38a breaking point
00:24:41last night
00:24:41with
00:24:42my siblings.
00:24:44They don't care.
00:24:46Like no one cares.
00:24:48So
00:24:48I'm finally gonna
00:24:50give in to
00:24:51my thoughts
00:24:53because what's
00:24:54the point of
00:24:54trying to protect
00:24:55everyone else?
00:24:56What did you think
00:24:56about hurting the family?
00:24:59Only yesterday.
00:25:00As Alec shared
00:25:01more about
00:25:01the triggering
00:25:02moment before
00:25:02taking the lead
00:25:03on the shooting
00:25:04Devin's assistance
00:25:05in the horrid
00:25:06attack began
00:25:07to take shape.
00:25:08Did something
00:25:09happen at school
00:25:10this week or
00:25:11what
00:25:13what
00:25:13helped me
00:25:14understand
00:25:15what the
00:25:15big thing
00:25:17the analogy
00:25:18you always hear
00:25:19the straw
00:25:19that broke
00:25:19the camel's back.
00:25:22What was that?
00:25:23this kid kept
00:25:26calling me
00:25:27by my biological
00:25:28name
00:25:28and that's
00:25:29that's what
00:25:31made me lose it.
00:25:32Devin agreed
00:25:33that Alec's mood
00:25:33had been noticeably
00:25:34different that morning.
00:25:36Today was like
00:25:37when it really got
00:25:37scary.
00:25:38It was like
00:25:38a different person
00:25:39kind of like
00:25:40seeing him.
00:25:42That
00:25:42to me
00:25:43was like
00:25:44okay maybe
00:25:44Alec is like
00:25:45Alec is really
00:25:46like going
00:25:47like crazy
00:25:48this time.
00:25:49According to Alec
00:25:50Devin's uncertainty
00:25:51had been a part
00:25:52of the plan
00:25:53all along.
00:25:54Devin's
00:25:55he's an idiot.
00:25:56He's a complete
00:25:57idiot.
00:25:58So basically
00:25:58anything I say
00:25:59he would
00:26:01be like
00:26:01okay
00:26:03because I'm
00:26:04his best friend.
00:26:05Forensic research
00:26:06has found that
00:26:06in cases where
00:26:07there is more
00:26:08than one perpetrator
00:26:09there's always
00:26:10an alpha figure
00:26:11to execute
00:26:11the plan.
00:26:13While there can
00:26:13be multiple
00:26:14submissive characters
00:26:15there's only
00:26:16one dominant
00:26:16personality.
00:26:18Devin's guidance
00:26:19counselor
00:26:19Ms. Wright
00:26:20had also shared
00:26:21some insight
00:26:21on the subject
00:26:22with the police.
00:26:23Alec is weird.
00:26:25He gravitates
00:26:26to vulnerable
00:26:27people.
00:26:28Okay.
00:26:29Do you know
00:26:29what I mean?
00:26:30Devin's very vulnerable.
00:26:32Is Alec bullied
00:26:33in any ways?
00:26:34I feel that Alec
00:26:35is a bully.
00:26:36This would require
00:26:37a lot more
00:26:37investigation
00:26:38but for the
00:26:39time being
00:26:39the detectives
00:26:40prioritized
00:26:41establishing a
00:26:42timeline of events
00:26:43from both Devin's
00:26:44and Alec's
00:26:45perspectives.
00:26:46Originally
00:26:47I was going
00:26:47to figure out
00:26:49a way for someone
00:26:50to buy me a gun
00:26:50but no one
00:26:52would.
00:26:53And then
00:26:54Devin and I
00:26:55had a conversation
00:26:56where he was like
00:26:57yeah my parents
00:26:58have like a couple
00:26:59guns in their house.
00:27:00In the other room
00:27:01Devin continued
00:27:02his harrowing
00:27:03version of that
00:27:04morning's events.
00:27:05I left school
00:27:06went to
00:27:06back to my house
00:27:08then as I was
00:27:09about to go inside
00:27:10I opened the garage
00:27:11and then Alec
00:27:12messaged me again
00:27:13told me to come back.
00:27:14Why were you
00:27:15going back to your house?
00:27:16I was going back
00:27:17to my house
00:27:17because I was
00:27:18going to call
00:27:19the police.
00:27:21That's when I
00:27:21picked him up
00:27:22and then we
00:27:22went back to my
00:27:23house and that's
00:27:23when he kind of
00:27:24seemed a little
00:27:25off.
00:27:27And then we
00:27:28went into my
00:27:29basement.
00:27:31And that was
00:27:31when he pulled
00:27:32out the cocaine
00:27:33the first time
00:27:35and I told him
00:27:37I was like
00:27:37I just don't
00:27:38I'm not down
00:27:39with this
00:27:39like you're
00:27:40going kind of
00:27:41too far
00:27:42and you're like
00:27:42scaring me a little
00:27:43bit.
00:27:44And I was like
00:27:44I don't want you
00:27:45to hurt anybody
00:27:46at school
00:27:47or anything
00:27:47like that.
00:27:48I really think
00:27:49you need help
00:27:50and that was
00:27:52when he started
00:27:52really threatening me.
00:27:54Did you use
00:27:54the cocaine
00:27:55when he pulled
00:27:55it out?
00:27:56Not the first time.
00:27:57What did he do
00:27:57with the cocaine?
00:27:58He did one
00:27:59line of it
00:28:00and then
00:28:01we went upstairs.
00:28:02According to Alec
00:28:03things only escalated
00:28:04from there.
00:28:05You said you broke
00:28:06into his house?
00:28:07I didn't break
00:28:08into his house
00:28:08I like
00:28:09trashed it.
00:28:12How did you
00:28:12trash?
00:28:13I went through
00:28:14looking for the
00:28:15key to the safe
00:28:16originally
00:28:16and I trashed
00:28:18looking for it.
00:28:19He knows
00:28:19from other times
00:28:20I've told him
00:28:21that my dad
00:28:21had four guns
00:28:23in the safe
00:28:23up in my mom's
00:28:24room but it was
00:28:25locked and I
00:28:26didn't know
00:28:26where the keys
00:28:26were.
00:28:27That morning
00:28:28though the lack
00:28:28of keys was
00:28:29little more
00:28:30than a speed
00:28:30bump.
00:28:31And then I
00:28:31led him to
00:28:32the safe
00:28:32and that's
00:28:33when he
00:28:33hit it a few
00:28:35times and then
00:28:36told me to
00:28:36pull it out
00:28:37and made me
00:28:37pull it out.
00:28:38What did he
00:28:39hit him with?
00:28:40The axe he
00:28:41got in my
00:28:42garage.
00:28:42I was just
00:28:43like holding
00:28:44it up and
00:28:44I was like
00:28:45do it.
00:28:46Okay.
00:28:47And what
00:28:47happened after
00:28:47that?
00:28:48He just
00:28:49kept crying
00:28:50and opening
00:28:51the safe
00:28:52and he
00:28:54had to help
00:28:54me pry it
00:28:54open.
00:28:55According to
00:28:56the videos
00:28:56found on
00:28:57Alex's phone
00:28:57this appeared
00:28:58to be the
00:28:59truth.
00:29:00Open it!
00:29:06Open it.
00:29:07I'm trying.
00:29:09Additionally
00:29:10when searching
00:29:11Devin's house
00:29:11police found
00:29:12the scene
00:29:13just like
00:29:13it was
00:29:14described.
00:29:15However
00:29:15they still
00:29:16suspected
00:29:16something
00:29:17wasn't quite
00:29:17right about
00:29:18Devin's
00:29:18story.
00:29:19He hit
00:29:20open the
00:29:20gun safe
00:29:21with the
00:29:21axe a bunch
00:29:22of times
00:29:22tried with
00:29:23the crowbar
00:29:24and that's
00:29:24how he
00:29:25pried open
00:29:25the door
00:29:25without the
00:29:26key.
00:29:27It like
00:29:27popped out
00:29:28he was
00:29:28making me
00:29:29help him
00:29:29so he
00:29:29didn't get
00:29:30too tired
00:29:30because he
00:29:31didn't want
00:29:32me to be
00:29:32able to run
00:29:33away.
00:29:33It was
00:29:34wearing me
00:29:34out a bunch
00:29:35and he
00:29:35just kept
00:29:36telling me
00:29:36to and I
00:29:37told him
00:29:37I just
00:29:37can't anymore
00:29:39and so
00:29:39he grabbed
00:29:40the crowbar
00:29:41and tried
00:29:42it open
00:29:42and just
00:29:43like broke
00:29:44it basically
00:29:44it's just
00:29:45like bent
00:29:45a bunch.
00:29:46What were
00:29:46you writing
00:29:46on the
00:29:47walls?
00:29:48The voices
00:29:49when.
00:29:50The voices
00:29:50when?
00:29:51Yeah.
00:29:52And where
00:29:53did you
00:29:53write that?
00:29:54Um,
00:29:55in his
00:29:56mom's
00:29:56closet.
00:29:57More about
00:29:58these mysterious
00:29:58voices and
00:30:00the nature
00:30:00of the
00:30:00writing would
00:30:01be investigated
00:30:02in due
00:30:02time.
00:30:03Back with
00:30:04Devin he
00:30:04told police
00:30:05everything he
00:30:06and Alec
00:30:06took out
00:30:07of the
00:30:07safe.
00:30:08He got
00:30:08all the
00:30:08guns,
00:30:09put them
00:30:09in his
00:30:10backpack and
00:30:11then he
00:30:11told me to
00:30:12follow him
00:30:13which is
00:30:13when he
00:30:14recorded the
00:30:14video making
00:30:16me do the
00:30:16cocaine because
00:30:17he was holding
00:30:17it down to
00:30:19my head.
00:30:20Do it.
00:30:21I'm sorry.
00:30:23Hurry the
00:30:23f*** up.
00:30:24Sorry.
00:30:25Had you ever
00:30:26done cocaine
00:30:26prior to that?
00:30:28No.
00:30:29I couldn't
00:30:30do all of it
00:30:31because it was
00:30:32like freaking
00:30:32me out too
00:30:33much.
00:30:33Who loaded
00:30:35the guns?
00:30:36Alec loaded
00:30:36all the guns
00:30:37yeah.
00:30:37So all the
00:30:38guns were
00:30:38unloaded?
00:30:39Yeah he made
00:30:39me hand him
00:30:40the ammo
00:30:40because he
00:30:41grabbed all
00:30:41the guns
00:30:41and then he
00:30:42loaded all
00:30:43the guns.
00:30:44I had to
00:30:44help him
00:30:45carry some
00:30:45stuff but I
00:30:46carried the
00:30:47ammo and then
00:30:47I didn't
00:30:48touch the
00:30:49guns until
00:30:49he made me
00:30:51put them in
00:30:52the guitar
00:30:52case because
00:30:54he wanted it
00:30:55to be
00:30:55inconspicuous.
00:30:56In the other
00:30:57room Alec
00:30:58admitted to
00:30:58vandalizing
00:30:59Devin's mom's
00:31:00car and
00:31:01explained more
00:31:01about the
00:31:02reason.
00:31:02So after
00:31:04you set
00:31:04mom's car
00:31:05on fire
00:31:05is mom's
00:31:06car on
00:31:06fire?
00:31:07Tell me
00:31:07about that.
00:31:08He spray
00:31:09painted it
00:31:09and then I
00:31:10put gasoline
00:31:10all over it
00:31:11and then he
00:31:12lit it on
00:31:13fire.
00:31:14When searching
00:31:14Devin's house
00:31:15the police
00:31:15had seen
00:31:16this for
00:31:16themselves.
00:31:18The side
00:31:18of the
00:31:18car was
00:31:19tagged with
00:31:19the number
00:31:20666
00:31:20a pentagram
00:31:22and the
00:31:22phrase
00:31:23society.
00:31:24The interior
00:31:25showed evidence
00:31:26of burning
00:31:27but the fire
00:31:28had apparently
00:31:28gone out
00:31:29before the
00:31:29conflagration
00:31:30spread.
00:31:31In a story
00:31:32full of
00:31:33disturbing
00:31:33details
00:31:34what Alec
00:31:35said next
00:31:35was perhaps
00:31:36the most
00:31:36hair-raising
00:31:37fact so
00:31:38far.
00:31:38How did
00:31:39you guys
00:31:39get into
00:31:39school when
00:31:40you got
00:31:40there?
00:31:41Oh we
00:31:41just walked
00:31:41in.
00:31:43So tell
00:31:43me when
00:31:43you get
00:31:43to miss
00:31:44heartburn
00:31:44and what
00:31:44happens?
00:31:45I lied
00:31:45and say
00:31:46I need
00:31:47to talk
00:31:47to this
00:31:47kid
00:31:48when really
00:31:49I didn't
00:31:49want to
00:31:49go to
00:31:50the room
00:31:50and
00:31:52basically
00:31:54my aunt
00:31:55was in
00:31:56there for
00:31:56what reason
00:31:57I don't
00:31:57know and
00:31:58I was like
00:31:59you need
00:31:59to leave.
00:32:00Grace
00:32:01Alexant
00:32:01who goes
00:32:02to the
00:32:02same
00:32:02school
00:32:03spoke
00:32:03with
00:32:03police
00:32:04too
00:32:04and
00:32:05shared
00:32:05her
00:32:05memories
00:32:05of
00:32:06the
00:32:06interaction.
00:32:07He said
00:32:07that Devin
00:32:08was kind
00:32:08of upset
00:32:09and he
00:32:09thought he
00:32:09was going
00:32:10to get
00:32:10in a fight
00:32:10with our
00:32:10friends.
00:32:11He said
00:32:12he was
00:32:12going to
00:32:12calm
00:32:12Devin
00:32:12down.
00:32:14Speaking
00:32:14of
00:32:14counselors
00:32:15that morning
00:32:15Devin's
00:32:16guidance
00:32:16counselor
00:32:17had been
00:32:17trying to
00:32:18track him
00:32:18down
00:32:18anyway.
00:32:20According
00:32:20to her
00:32:20he was
00:32:21not on
00:32:21track
00:32:21to graduate
00:32:22in three
00:32:22days
00:32:23since he
00:32:23was failing
00:32:24all of
00:32:24his
00:32:25classes.
00:32:25Do you
00:32:26think he
00:32:26knew what
00:32:27was going
00:32:28to happen?
00:32:29I hope
00:32:29not but I
00:32:30feel like
00:32:30that's a
00:32:31possibility.
00:32:32Devin
00:32:32meanwhile
00:32:33tried to
00:32:33explain his
00:32:34plan.
00:32:35I was
00:32:35still kind
00:32:36of trying
00:32:36to talk
00:32:37him out
00:32:37of it
00:32:37and get
00:32:38help but
00:32:38my plan
00:32:39was
00:32:39to leave
00:32:41and then I
00:32:42was going
00:32:42to go to
00:32:43the office
00:32:43and I was
00:32:44going to
00:32:44tell them
00:32:44anyways
00:32:45because I
00:32:46was just
00:32:47going to
00:32:47leave my
00:32:47suitcase
00:32:49or not
00:32:49the
00:32:50guitar
00:32:51case
00:32:51in there
00:32:51because the
00:32:52suitcase
00:32:52can't
00:32:53handle.
00:32:54I was
00:32:54just going
00:32:54to leave
00:32:55I left
00:32:55it in
00:32:55there and
00:32:56I went
00:32:56to the
00:32:56office
00:32:56and told
00:32:57Ms. Harper
00:32:57I was
00:32:58sick.
00:32:58Mitchell
00:32:59walked me
00:32:59to the
00:33:00office
00:33:00because she
00:33:01told him
00:33:01to.
00:33:02Why did
00:33:03you want
00:33:03to go
00:33:04to the
00:33:04office?
00:33:05Because I
00:33:05wanted to
00:33:06see if I
00:33:06could just
00:33:07report him
00:33:07and get
00:33:08anything but
00:33:09he threatened
00:33:09me.
00:33:09He said
00:33:10he was
00:33:10still going
00:33:10to kill
00:33:10people.
00:33:12Over the
00:33:12phone he
00:33:12said he
00:33:13would kill
00:33:13me and
00:33:13everybody
00:33:14in the
00:33:14office.
00:33:15Mitchell,
00:33:15another
00:33:16senior at
00:33:16STEM,
00:33:17had no
00:33:17idea what
00:33:18was about
00:33:18to happen
00:33:18but reportedly
00:33:19had problems
00:33:20with Alec.
00:33:21Do you
00:33:22know Mitchell?
00:33:23I never
00:33:23talked to
00:33:24him.
00:33:24I try
00:33:24not to
00:33:24associate
00:33:25with him.
00:33:25Basically,
00:33:27all I ever
00:33:27hear about
00:33:28him is
00:33:28how he
00:33:30hates me.
00:33:31How do
00:33:32you hear
00:33:32that he's
00:33:33saying all
00:33:33this stuff?
00:33:34Through
00:33:34Devin.
00:33:36Okay.
00:33:36How is
00:33:36Devin hearing
00:33:37it?
00:33:38Because that's
00:33:39all Mitchell
00:33:39talks about
00:33:40apparently.
00:33:41When the
00:33:41police spoke
00:33:42with Mitchell
00:33:42directly though,
00:33:43he did not
00:33:44mention having
00:33:44any issue
00:33:45with Alec.
00:33:46However,
00:33:46he did report
00:33:47an incident
00:33:48with Devin
00:33:48that took
00:33:49place a few
00:33:49months earlier.
00:33:50I was like,
00:33:51hey Devin,
00:33:51Devin,
00:33:52and he was
00:33:52ignoring me.
00:33:53And then I
00:33:54said,
00:33:54is the
00:33:54skinwalker
00:33:55dead or
00:33:55something like
00:33:56that?
00:33:56And then he
00:33:57turned around
00:33:57and I'm
00:34:01not going to
00:34:01lie,
00:34:01and I
00:34:02had crossed
00:34:02my mind
00:34:02that he
00:34:03would seem
00:34:03like kind
00:34:04of the
00:34:04person who
00:34:04would try
00:34:05to harm
00:34:05other
00:34:05students.
00:34:06Very
00:34:06sarcastic
00:34:07and generally
00:34:08kind of
00:34:09mean with
00:34:09his remarks.
00:34:10Mitchell
00:34:11would have
00:34:11more to
00:34:12add to
00:34:12the
00:34:12investigation
00:34:12later.
00:34:14For now,
00:34:14the detectives
00:34:15continued to
00:34:16question Devin.
00:34:17I didn't
00:34:17tell Mitchell.
00:34:19I didn't
00:34:19tell Mitchell.
00:34:20You walked
00:34:21to the office?
00:34:21Because I
00:34:22didn't want him
00:34:22to freak out
00:34:23about anything.
00:34:24I wanted to
00:34:24get to the
00:34:24office so I
00:34:25could tell an
00:34:25adult and get
00:34:26the security
00:34:26officer so
00:34:27that one
00:34:27freaked out.
00:34:28Okay.
00:34:29So you go
00:34:30back to the
00:34:30office,
00:34:31then what?
00:34:32They gave me
00:34:33some water and
00:34:33stuff because I
00:34:34said I was
00:34:35feeling sick and
00:34:36dehydrated because
00:34:38I was all sweaty
00:34:39and freaked out
00:34:40from the
00:34:41cocaine because I
00:34:42just kept
00:34:42running trying
00:34:43going to
00:34:44delay and
00:34:47get him to
00:34:48change his
00:34:48mind and
00:34:50then they
00:34:50gave me
00:34:50an ice pack
00:34:51and some
00:34:51water.
00:34:52I drank all
00:34:52the water
00:34:53with the
00:34:53ice pack on
00:34:54my head and
00:34:54they left
00:34:55the room and
00:34:55closed the
00:34:56door and
00:34:56that's when
00:34:56I checked
00:34:57my phone and
00:34:57saw his
00:34:58thing.
00:34:58Devin hadn't
00:34:59been shy about
00:35:00expressing this
00:35:01exact concern to
00:35:02the officers on
00:35:03scene at the
00:35:03school as he
00:35:04insisted that he
00:35:05only wanted to
00:35:06save everyone.
00:35:07He came to
00:35:07the door outside
00:35:09of the office.
00:35:09He'd
00:35:10Snapchat messaged
00:35:10me that he
00:35:11was going to
00:35:11rush the
00:35:12office and
00:35:12kill me and
00:35:12everyone in
00:35:13there.
00:35:14I didn't
00:35:14come back.
00:35:17And I was
00:35:17like super
00:35:18freaked out
00:35:19because I
00:35:20mean it's
00:35:21the worst
00:35:22thing I've
00:35:22ever been
00:35:23through.
00:35:25I can't
00:35:26remain calm
00:35:27when he's
00:35:28doing that.
00:35:30I was just
00:35:32so freaked
00:35:33out and like
00:35:34shaky when I
00:35:34got there.
00:35:35When you guys
00:35:36were walking
00:35:36down that
00:35:37hallway, did
00:35:38you guys talk
00:35:39about it?
00:35:39How did you
00:35:39guys decide what
00:35:40doors to go?
00:35:41Tell me about
00:35:41that.
00:35:42I said you
00:35:42cover the
00:35:43other door.
00:35:44So we went
00:35:44through separate
00:35:44doors.
00:35:45Devin picked
00:35:46up the story
00:35:47when he and
00:35:47Alec entered
00:35:48Miss Harper's
00:35:49room.
00:35:49So you both
00:35:51entered at the
00:35:51same time?
00:35:53I think so.
00:35:54And I sat
00:35:54down in the
00:35:55suitcase and I
00:35:56went to
00:35:57and tried to
00:35:58get away one
00:35:59more time but
00:36:00it seemed like
00:36:01he wasn't
00:36:01listening to me
00:36:02and he was
00:36:02pissed off so
00:36:03I grabbed the
00:36:04suitcase and I
00:36:05was going to
00:36:05leave but then
00:36:06I saw Alec
00:36:07like look at
00:36:09me and like
00:36:10kind of like
00:36:10nod at me
00:36:11because he
00:36:11knew I was
00:36:12trying to
00:36:12leave because I
00:36:13opened the
00:36:13door again and
00:36:13then I closed
00:36:14it and just
00:36:15opened the
00:36:17suitcase and
00:36:17told everybody
00:36:18to stay down
00:36:19and not
00:36:21move and
00:36:23then I was
00:36:23just going to
00:36:25run.
00:36:26Alec however
00:36:27added a tiny
00:36:28detail that had
00:36:29the potential to
00:36:30change everything.
00:36:31He picks up the
00:36:32guitar case,
00:36:33actually he's
00:36:33going to leave,
00:36:34tells Miss Harper
00:36:34that he's
00:36:35leaving and
00:36:36then goes to
00:36:36the door and
00:36:38takes off the
00:36:39magnet slip so
00:36:41no one from the
00:36:42outside could get
00:36:42in.
00:36:43The magnet was a
00:36:44standard security
00:36:45feature on all the
00:36:46doors at STEM
00:36:47school that were
00:36:47instituted as part
00:36:48of the lockdown
00:36:49protocol.
00:36:50If moved from
00:36:51their place, the
00:36:52strips would
00:36:52immediately lock the
00:36:53doors, securing
00:36:54everyone inside and
00:36:56locking out anyone
00:36:57who was outside the
00:36:58room.
00:36:59The police likely
00:37:00wondered why
00:37:00Devin hadn't
00:37:01addressed this tiny
00:37:02detail if he was an
00:37:03unwilling participant,
00:37:05but they would
00:37:05return to this
00:37:06later.
00:37:07In the course of
00:37:08the investigation,
00:37:09the police also
00:37:10spoke with Miss
00:37:10Harper, the
00:37:11teacher in room
00:37:12107 when the
00:37:13shooting took
00:37:14place.
00:37:15He grabs the
00:37:15guitar case,
00:37:16it's kind of
00:37:16really loud,
00:37:18shuffling,
00:37:18shuffling,
00:37:18shuffling,
00:37:19just to the
00:37:20point now where
00:37:20it's getting weird.
00:37:21Like I'm like,
00:37:22why are you being
00:37:22so loud,
00:37:23child?
00:37:25And I thought
00:37:26he was just
00:37:27being rude to
00:37:28his classmates.
00:37:29In front of the
00:37:30door, he drops
00:37:30the guitar case
00:37:31blocking the
00:37:32door.
00:37:32back with
00:37:37Devin, the
00:37:38police tried to
00:37:38clarify more
00:37:39details.
00:37:40Who pulled out
00:37:41a gun first?
00:37:43Alec was
00:37:44pulling it out
00:37:44and that's when
00:37:45I pulled mine
00:37:45out and told
00:37:46everyone not to
00:37:47move because I
00:37:47saw Alec
00:37:48reach for it
00:37:48because that
00:37:48was what he
00:37:49told me he
00:37:50was going to
00:37:50do.
00:37:51Devin said
00:37:51nobody move
00:37:52and then
00:37:54that's when
00:37:55everyone started
00:37:56freaking out
00:37:57and that's
00:38:00when like
00:38:00everything goes
00:38:01blurry.
00:38:02I just
00:38:02I still
00:38:04can't comprehend
00:38:05the fact that
00:38:06I did that
00:38:07and
00:38:08like I still
00:38:10can't comprehend
00:38:11what I did.
00:38:12A video clip
00:38:13from Snapchat
00:38:14hinted that this
00:38:15might not have
00:38:15been an entirely
00:38:16foreign feeling
00:38:17for Alec.
00:38:18I feel like
00:38:19this isn't
00:38:20real.
00:38:21What was Devin
00:38:21doing this?
00:38:22Could you see
00:38:22or hear him?
00:38:24No I was
00:38:24there was like
00:38:25a crowd of
00:38:26people jumping
00:38:27towards him
00:38:28trying to get
00:38:28the gun away
00:38:29from Devin
00:38:29and there was
00:38:30a the other
00:38:31half of the
00:38:31class was
00:38:32coming towards
00:38:32me and so
00:38:34that's when I
00:38:34was like
00:38:35shooting aimlessly.
00:38:38Kendrick and
00:38:38Brendan both at
00:38:39the same time
00:38:40just pushed
00:38:40rushed against
00:38:42me and they
00:38:42like tackled
00:38:43me and hit me
00:38:44which is when
00:38:44the gun I was
00:38:45holding went off.
00:38:46It was so quick.
00:38:48It was as if
00:38:49he said
00:38:50don't move
00:38:51and then all
00:38:52of a sudden
00:38:52bam he's against
00:38:53the wall.
00:38:53Did you say
00:38:54anything to
00:38:54Kendrick or
00:38:55Brendan when
00:38:55they came at
00:38:56you?
00:38:56I told Kendrick
00:38:57and Brendan
00:38:58when they were
00:38:58rushing me I
00:38:59started to yell
00:38:59no and I
00:39:01was like
00:39:01trying to
00:39:02throw it down
00:39:02and that's
00:39:03when I threw
00:39:03it down and
00:39:04I was like
00:39:04Brendan no I'm
00:39:05serious here's
00:39:06the gun like
00:39:07there's another
00:39:07gun in there
00:39:07Alec has two
00:39:08guns he has a
00:39:10Beretta and the
00:39:10revolver and he's
00:39:11trying to kill
00:39:12everyone.
00:39:13When the police
00:39:14talked to Brendan
00:39:14directly he said
00:39:16that's not how
00:39:16his confrontation
00:39:17with Devin
00:39:18went at all.
00:39:18At that moment
00:39:19my brain went
00:39:20this has to be a
00:39:21joke but this
00:39:22is nanoseconds
00:39:23I know it's
00:39:24nanoseconds
00:39:24because how fast
00:39:25things went
00:39:26Kendrick shot up
00:39:27and by time
00:39:28Devin was at
00:39:29the board I
00:39:30was up behind
00:39:32Devin delivering
00:39:32blows.
00:39:33During this
00:39:34confrontation
00:39:35at the white
00:39:36board where we
00:39:37were trying to
00:39:37move to the
00:39:37ground I heard
00:39:38one or two
00:39:39shots one or
00:39:40two during the
00:39:41wrestle during
00:39:42the initial when
00:39:42he brandished the
00:39:43weapon he had
00:39:45maybe fired
00:39:46not too sure
00:39:47about that but
00:39:47Josh was
00:39:48still still was
00:39:49doing what he
00:39:50needed to do.
00:39:52As Devin
00:39:53laid on the
00:39:53ground and his
00:39:54hand was coming
00:39:54near he attempted
00:39:55to twist the
00:39:56pistol back towards
00:39:57my and Josh's
00:39:58head and my
00:39:59head.
00:40:00When I saw this
00:40:00happening I
00:40:01delivered as many
00:40:03blows as I could
00:40:03to the arm and
00:40:04was able to peel
00:40:05his fingers away
00:40:06from the grip of
00:40:06the handgun.
00:40:07At that point he
00:40:08started apologizing
00:40:09and he immediately
00:40:10stopped resisting.
00:40:11Devin on the other
00:40:12hand said he
00:40:13never resisted at
00:40:14all.
00:40:15And I willingly
00:40:16just let Brendan
00:40:17grab the gun and
00:40:18take it and I
00:40:18immediately told him
00:40:19where all the other
00:40:20guns were that Alex
00:40:21had a gun, what his
00:40:22name was, I told
00:40:23everybody where my
00:40:24stuff was, where
00:40:25everything was.
00:40:26What was I doing
00:40:27when this was
00:40:27happening?
00:40:28I couldn't see
00:40:29anything because
00:40:30Josh and Brendan
00:40:31held me down and
00:40:33then Brendan got all
00:40:34the guns gathered
00:40:34them and I don't
00:40:35know what happened.
00:40:36I was just laying
00:40:38on the ground telling
00:40:39people information.
00:40:40I thought I heard
00:40:41more gunshots.
00:40:42I just heard a lot
00:40:43of yelling and
00:40:44screaming.
00:40:47I was just so in
00:40:48shock and freaked
00:40:49out.
00:40:49My ears were ringing
00:40:50from the gunshot
00:40:51because it was
00:40:51really close to me
00:40:52because he tackled
00:40:53me and that's why
00:40:54I just laid down.
00:40:59Alec offered an
00:41:00alternate perspective
00:41:01on the chaos that
00:41:02followed the initial
00:41:03gunshots.
00:41:04I don't remember
00:41:05who shot first, but
00:41:07I started freaking
00:41:08out because I
00:41:10still couldn't
00:41:11comprehend what I
00:41:12was doing and I
00:41:14just started shooting
00:41:16randomly.
00:41:19Shooting randomly?
00:41:20Yeah.
00:41:20At people?
00:41:21In the air?
00:41:22In the building?
00:41:22In the air.
00:41:23In the air.
00:41:24Tell me how you were,
00:41:24can you show how you
00:41:25were shooting?
00:41:26I was just like kind
00:41:27of like that.
00:41:29Okay.
00:41:30And you were moving
00:41:31your hand?
00:41:32As you were moving
00:41:32your hand were you
00:41:33pulling the trigger?
00:41:34Yeah.
00:41:34Ms. Harper though
00:41:35didn't seem to think
00:41:36that Alec's aim was
00:41:37random.
00:41:38Alec, I believe,
00:41:40had shot at me.
00:41:41I had a bullet
00:41:42casing burn here.
00:41:45I tripped back
00:41:47and fell into the
00:41:48bookcase.
00:41:49Okay.
00:41:50And I fell down
00:41:51to the floor.
00:41:52I thought for a
00:41:53moment that Alec
00:41:54was standing over me
00:41:55to make sure I was
00:41:57dead.
00:41:57And so for a few
00:41:59seconds I played
00:42:00dead.
00:42:01How many shots
00:42:02do you think you
00:42:02fired?
00:42:03Twelve.
00:42:04How do you know
00:42:04that?
00:42:05Because that's how
00:42:06many rounds was in
00:42:06the gun and then
00:42:07it stopped shooting.
00:42:09Alec exited the
00:42:10classroom intending
00:42:11to get the second
00:42:12gun.
00:42:13However, the students
00:42:13of 107 weren't
00:42:15having it.
00:42:15So you said that
00:42:16a kid tackled,
00:42:18he was hitting on
00:42:19you?
00:42:19Or he was hitting
00:42:20you?
00:42:20Yeah.
00:42:20Sorry.
00:42:21Tell me about that.
00:42:23This was after I
00:42:24started shooting and
00:42:25he jumped, he went
00:42:27onto Ms. Harper's
00:42:28desk and jumped on
00:42:29me and I tried to get
00:42:31out into the hallway
00:42:31and then he started
00:42:33like banging my
00:42:33head against the
00:42:34floor and then I
00:42:35like bit him to get
00:42:38him off me and
00:42:39that's when Ms.
00:42:40Harper like shoved
00:42:41him away and got
00:42:41on top of me.
00:42:42I had Alec in my
00:42:45hands and I was
00:42:48terrified that I
00:42:51didn't know all of
00:42:52a sudden if Alec,
00:42:55part of me was like
00:42:56am I going to break
00:42:56this kid's neck?
00:42:58And I'm like is this
00:43:00a shooter or is this
00:43:00an innocent kid that
00:43:01got the gun?
00:43:02I don't know.
00:43:02I don't know.
00:43:03Let go.
00:43:05So I let go.
00:43:06Everybody was getting
00:43:07out of the classroom
00:43:08screaming.
00:43:08I started screaming
00:43:09down the hallways
00:43:09lockdown, lockdown,
00:43:11lockdown and my only
00:43:11goal was to get the
00:43:14rest of the school
00:43:14in lockdown.
00:43:15She succeeded.
00:43:16Ms. Harper and
00:43:17several students made
00:43:18it to the office where
00:43:19the lockdown alarm was
00:43:20activated throughout all
00:43:22of STEM school, saving
00:43:23countless lives.
00:43:25From there she also
00:43:26called 911 and reported
00:43:28that two of the students
00:43:30who made it out with
00:43:30her had gunshot wounds.
00:43:32I didn't know how
00:43:33many there were so I
00:43:34wanted everybody
00:43:34unlocked until we'd be
00:43:36safe.
00:43:40I didn't want anybody
00:43:41wandering the hallways
00:43:42if they were there.
00:43:49I don't want to see it.
00:43:50I don't want to see it.
00:43:52Oh God.
00:43:53Why did they do this?
00:44:02While Ms. Harper tried
00:44:03to come to terms with
00:44:04what she'd lived through,
00:44:06Alec explained what
00:44:07happened after getting
00:44:08tackled.
00:44:09And then that's when
00:44:09the teacher showed up
00:44:10and he was in awe and
00:44:13he took the gun and
00:44:14then put it on the floor
00:44:15because some kid got
00:44:17shot.
00:44:17I don't think he knew
00:44:18I was the one who had
00:44:19the gun.
00:44:20I think he just thought
00:44:22I was a kid who found
00:44:23the gun and was
00:44:24freaking out.
00:44:25The teacher in question
00:44:26was the school IT worker,
00:44:28Mr. Pritchard, whose
00:44:29office was just across
00:44:30the hall from room 107.
00:44:33Alec was right.
00:44:34Mr. Pritchard had no
00:44:35idea that Alec was
00:44:36one of the shooters.
00:44:37He gave it to me
00:44:39very easily.
00:44:41And so in my mind,
00:44:43he wasn't involved.
00:44:45So as I was walking
00:44:46into the classroom,
00:44:48Brandon's walking
00:44:49towards me with a
00:44:51semi-automatic pistol
00:44:52in his hand and
00:44:53he's holding it by
00:44:54the barrel with the
00:44:56handle out towards
00:44:56me and he walks up
00:44:57to me and hands it
00:45:00to me and I take it.
00:45:01So that's when I have
00:45:02two pistols in my
00:45:03hands.
00:45:04I walk over and I
00:45:05see Kendrick lying
00:45:09at an angle towards
00:45:11the front wall of the
00:45:12classroom.
00:45:14Unattended in the
00:45:14hall, Alec took
00:45:15advantage of the
00:45:16opportunity.
00:45:17I went in, go to my
00:45:19backpack to get another
00:45:19gun because no one
00:45:20else knew I had that.
00:45:21And I was going to
00:45:22shoot myself.
00:45:22So I'm starting to
00:45:23walk away and the
00:45:24security guard comes up
00:45:25with a gun in his
00:45:26hands and says, tells
00:45:28me to put it down.
00:45:29And I'm basically like,
00:45:31okay.
00:45:32I put the gun down
00:45:33and he like,
00:45:35kneed me to the
00:45:37ground, like, put his
00:45:39knees on me.
00:45:40The security guard,
00:45:41Sam, who subdued Alec,
00:45:43realized that something
00:45:44was wrong while taking
00:45:45his break all the way
00:45:46across the building.
00:45:47As soon as he heard the
00:45:49words shooting and
00:45:50room 107, he started
00:45:52running, weapon drawn.
00:45:54Sam spoke with the
00:45:55police directly multiple
00:45:57times.
00:45:57You know, I'm asking
00:45:58Alec, hey, are you
00:45:59alone?
00:46:00Where's the other
00:46:00shooters?
00:46:01You know, what's going
00:46:02on here?
00:46:04Alec's only response was,
00:46:05kill me, kill me now.
00:46:07I don't deserve to live.
00:46:09Things are getting
00:46:10louder.
00:46:11They're coming.
00:46:12I'm like, who?
00:46:13Where?
00:46:15Alec kept replying and
00:46:16saying those things to
00:46:17me.
00:46:18Just kill me now.
00:46:19They're getting louder.
00:46:21I see an AR rifle and
00:46:24someone in plain clothes
00:46:25coming through the
00:46:26hallway.
00:46:27I didn't hear a breach.
00:46:28I didn't hear police or
00:46:30any of that.
00:46:31And I yelled security and
00:46:32I fired around.
00:46:34One of the bullets from
00:46:35the friendly fire injured
00:46:36someone in room 106.
00:46:38Back with Alec, the
00:46:39police asked about some
00:46:40specific details.
00:46:42Do you know if you
00:46:43hit any kids?
00:46:46I don't know.
00:46:47My aim's not good, so
00:46:48I'm not sure if I hit
00:46:49any kids, but I know
00:46:49Devin shot.
00:46:51He fired.
00:46:53And I don't know if it
00:46:54was me or him that
00:46:55hit this kid.
00:46:57Do you know who that
00:46:57was?
00:47:00I don't remember his
00:47:01name.
00:47:03Is that a male?
00:47:03Yeah.
00:47:05Did you see what
00:47:06happened to that kid?
00:47:07All I know is he was
00:47:09on the ground and I
00:47:10could hear him like
00:47:11screaming.
00:47:12Did you see if that
00:47:13hit anybody?
00:47:15Kendrick.
00:47:16Okay.
00:47:17Did you see that?
00:47:18I don't think Josh
00:47:19got hit, but I don't
00:47:20know if that was.
00:47:21I don't like her if it
00:47:22went through Kendrick
00:47:23because I heard someone
00:47:24say exit wound.
00:47:26Statements from the
00:47:27witnesses revealed far
00:47:28more about who had been
00:47:29injured.
00:47:30As soon as Brendan
00:47:31noticed that Kendrick
00:47:32was down, he rushed to
00:47:33his side while Josh
00:47:34kept Devin down.
00:47:36I came over, immediately
00:47:38started tapping him,
00:47:39Kendrick, stay with me,
00:47:40stay with me, you all
00:47:40right, you all right?
00:47:42No response.
00:47:43His breathing was
00:47:43completely staggered, his
00:47:44eyes rolled back.
00:47:45In the midst of all this
00:47:46chaos, Brendan managed to
00:47:48call 911.
00:47:50Help was nearer than he
00:47:51expected though, as he was
00:47:53aided immediately by Mr.
00:47:54Pritchard, who's a former
00:47:55Navy sailor.
00:47:57When I'd asked Brendan if
00:47:58there was anything I could
00:47:59use to apply pressure to
00:48:01Kendrick's wound, he didn't
00:48:03find anything, so I just
00:48:06went ahead and started
00:48:07putting pressure with my
00:48:08hand.
00:48:08At that point, he was
00:48:09breathing, it was like he
00:48:12was almost kind of moaning
00:48:13with like some spittle
00:48:16coming out of his lips.
00:48:18I see Josh laying on top of
00:48:20Devin, and I looked and I
00:48:23saw Josh had some blood
00:48:25marks on his legs, but it
00:48:28didn't look like they were
00:48:29growing, so I just figured,
00:48:32okay, he's okay for now.
00:48:34Devin Erickson, while still
00:48:35on the ground, being held
00:48:36down by Josh was going,
00:48:38Alec made me do it, I'm
00:48:39sorry, I'm sorry, it wasn't
00:48:40my fault, and then just
00:48:41through an absolute fit of
00:48:43aggravation, I got up in
00:48:44his face and I screamed as
00:48:45loud as I could, shut the
00:48:46fuck up.
00:48:47Or then Mr. Pritchard then
00:48:48responded with, please don't
00:48:49do that, keep your voice
00:48:50down.
00:48:51Devin then responded,
00:48:52there's a jacket out in the
00:48:53hallway to put pressure on.
00:48:54While Brendan went to get
00:48:57the jacket, Mr. Pritchard
00:48:59made a grim discovery.
00:49:01I looked back over and
00:49:02Kendrick stopped breathing
00:49:03at that point, and I was
00:49:06fearful that he had
00:49:08passed.
00:49:09You know, I tapped him on
00:49:11the cheek, hey, come on,
00:49:12stay with me, check for a
00:49:14pulse, I couldn't get one.
00:49:16In the hallway, Brendan
00:49:18didn't find the jacket.
00:49:20Instead, he ran into the
00:49:21security guard and Alec.
00:49:23And from the other end of
00:49:24the hallway, behind a
00:49:25little jut out for the size
00:49:27of the classroom, was a
00:49:28security guard.
00:49:28He was brandishing another
00:49:30Glock, and he told me to
00:49:31drop to the ground.
00:49:32I immediately did, and I
00:49:34yelled, two students have
00:49:35been shot, two students have
00:49:36been shot, I do not have a
00:49:37gun, we have one of the
00:49:38shooters in there.
00:49:40He then told me to crawl to
00:49:41him, and that is when I
00:49:43noticed that he had the
00:49:44second shooter, Alec, in
00:49:47handcuffs, off to the right
00:49:48side of the hallway.
00:49:50How long do you think
00:49:50that'll take?
00:49:52Oh, it couldn't have been
00:49:53more than two minutes.
00:49:55In addition to the
00:49:55carnage in the classroom,
00:49:57Alec's next comment made
00:49:58the situation even more
00:50:00hair-raising.
00:50:01When you saw these kids,
00:50:03especially Kendrick, go
00:50:04down, what was going on
00:50:06in your head?
00:50:06Was it, I'm going to
00:50:08continue shooting, or I'm
00:50:10going to help them, or was
00:50:11something else going on
00:50:12in your head?
00:50:14Everything was quiet.
00:50:15Like, it's only quiet
00:50:19when, like, everything's,
00:50:21like, they're satisfied
00:50:22with what I'm doing.
00:50:23That's the only time
00:50:23they're quiet is when I
00:50:25listen to them.
00:50:26Alec's aunt, Grace, said
00:50:27that Alec had previously
00:50:28reported hearing voices,
00:50:30but the family was unsure
00:50:31if this was true.
00:50:33As opposed to the silence
00:50:34in Alec's mind, Devin
00:50:36seemed to have experienced
00:50:37the resulting chaos in a
00:50:39blur.
00:50:40He only seemed to remember
00:50:41bits and pieces of what
00:50:42came next.
00:50:43Then what happened?
00:50:44Well, I got handcuffed,
00:50:46obviously, because the
00:50:48people came in, because
00:50:49Josh just held me down
00:50:50and I just let him.
00:50:52And he said he was hit,
00:50:53and I just kept telling
00:50:54him, you know, just wrap
00:50:57something around his leg
00:50:59and save himself.
00:51:00And just, like, you know,
00:51:01telling everyone about
00:51:02Alec and what he was
00:51:04wearing, because I didn't
00:51:05want other people to get
00:51:06hurt, because I knew he
00:51:08was just going to keep
00:51:09going, killing people.
00:51:11And now everyone's going
00:51:12to think I'm a monster.
00:51:15By this point, police
00:51:16made entry into the
00:51:17school to attend to the
00:51:18wounded, rescue the
00:51:20students, and, of course,
00:51:21detain Alec and Devin.
00:51:23Meanwhile, word was
00:51:25getting out about the
00:51:25calamity at STEM.
00:51:27Devin's friend David
00:51:28recalled the chilling
00:51:29moment he found out
00:51:30what was happening.
00:51:32I got a message saying
00:51:33that there were three
00:51:34shooters and that one of
00:51:36them had purple hair,
00:51:37and immediately I just
00:51:38went, like, Devin, it's
00:51:39got to be Devin.
00:51:39With all of these
00:51:41statements, the police
00:51:42now knew what had
00:51:43happened.
00:51:44The reason why, however,
00:51:45remained elusive.
00:51:47So why were you
00:51:48planning to do this?
00:51:50I feel like I was
00:51:51doing people a favor,
00:51:53like, showing them
00:51:53the real world.
00:51:55I'm basically showing
00:51:57people how I feel.
00:52:01Was your intention
00:52:02to shoot people today?
00:52:03Not really.
00:52:04I just wanted to...
00:52:05I wanted to shoot...
00:52:08but I didn't
00:52:10necessarily want to
00:52:11kill anyone.
00:52:12I just want them to
00:52:13have something bad
00:52:15happen to them.
00:52:15I'm still, like,
00:52:17completely...
00:52:18I'm just in awe
00:52:21about how I let my
00:52:23thoughts get to be
00:52:24like this, how I
00:52:25thought I was in
00:52:26control, but I'm not.
00:52:27I was just thinking
00:52:28I'm just doing what
00:52:32everyone expected me
00:52:32to.
00:52:33At what point did you
00:52:34know that Alec was
00:52:36going to hurt students
00:52:37or shoot the school?
00:52:39Or shoot anybody
00:52:40at the school?
00:52:40Once I knew he was
00:52:41going to, when I saw
00:52:44the axe and he started
00:52:45to use, like, getting
00:52:46really pissed off with
00:52:47the cocaine and stuff
00:52:48and he told me I
00:52:49better get back, I was
00:52:50like, thinking I could
00:52:51still talk him out of
00:52:52it and convince him
00:52:53not to, that he was
00:52:54just probably going to
00:52:55do something stupid
00:52:55because at first I
00:52:57thought you might
00:52:57just...
00:52:59but obviously not.
00:53:02So when he had the
00:53:05axe, that's when you
00:53:06first thought that...
00:53:07That's when I was
00:53:07like, okay, he's
00:53:08serious, he's going to
00:53:11hurt me if I don't
00:53:12cooperate with him.
00:53:14Alec said that
00:53:15actually wasn't the
00:53:16case.
00:53:16What was your
00:53:17intention if he
00:53:17didn't do the
00:53:18cocaine?
00:53:19I really wasn't
00:53:20going to do
00:53:21anything.
00:53:22This wasn't the
00:53:22only discrepancy the
00:53:24police had noticed.
00:53:25They began to press
00:53:26Devin harder about
00:53:27some of their
00:53:27concerns, but his
00:53:29responses ended up
00:53:30raising more questions
00:53:31than they answered.
00:53:32When Alec messaged
00:53:34you and asked you to
00:53:35pick him up at
00:53:36school, you went
00:53:38back to school, you
00:53:39picked him up, did
00:53:40you ever see a
00:53:41weapon on him?
00:53:42No, I was just
00:53:42really worried about
00:53:43him because I thought
00:53:44he might hurt
00:53:44himself too, but I
00:53:46was also a little bit
00:53:47scared because, like,
00:53:48you know, I know he
00:53:49has all those problems,
00:53:50I don't know if he
00:53:51was going to snap or
00:53:52something.
00:53:53Alec, though, said
00:53:54that Devin decided he
00:53:55was willing to go
00:53:56through with the
00:53:56attack on his own.
00:53:58We weren't going to
00:53:58go through with it,
00:53:59but then he was
00:54:00like...
00:54:01I'm back and, like,
00:54:04I'll do what you
00:54:04want me to.
00:54:05And I was like,
00:54:05okay.
00:54:06Aside from when you
00:54:08made threats to him
00:54:09at home, like, with
00:54:10the axe and all that
00:54:11stuff, did you say
00:54:12anything to him?
00:54:13Threatening or...
00:54:15I was just...
00:54:18I don't...
00:54:18I don't know.
00:54:19He was just, like,
00:54:20okay with everything.
00:54:22I think he thought
00:54:23that I had a point.
00:54:24I think I actually
00:54:25got into his head.
00:54:27And he was
00:54:27listening to me.
00:54:28On that note, the
00:54:30detectives began to
00:54:31wrap up Alec's
00:54:32interrogation.
00:54:33I hope no one
00:54:34died today.
00:54:35Tragically, there was
00:54:36one fatality at the
00:54:37STEM shooting.
00:54:39Kendrick, the first
00:54:40student to rush Devin,
00:54:41had been shot twice
00:54:42and was pronounced
00:54:43dead shortly after the
00:54:45responding officers
00:54:46dragged him to
00:54:47safety.
00:54:48Officers met with
00:54:49Kendrick's parents to
00:54:50answer what questions
00:54:51they could, and in
00:54:53the process learned
00:54:53more about what a
00:54:54hero Kendrick was.
00:54:56his parents described
00:54:57him as kind,
00:54:59outgoing, and a
00:55:00friend to everyone.
00:55:01They asked him,
00:55:02are you surprised
00:55:03that he would do
00:55:04that?
00:55:04And immediately,
00:55:05both of us were
00:55:06like, no, it doesn't
00:55:07surprise us.
00:55:08You're going to pull
00:55:08one kid out of there
00:55:09and it has to be
00:55:10mine, you know,
00:55:10that has to have
00:55:12this happen to him.
00:55:13I just can't figure
00:55:14it out.
00:55:14We get to view him
00:55:15today.
00:55:19Since the last time
00:55:20we've seen him
00:55:20alive and, you know,
00:55:24I don't know if I'm
00:55:25ready for that.
00:55:26The initial
00:55:29interrogation
00:55:30concluded, but the
00:55:31police would soon
00:55:32speak with Alec
00:55:32again and learn
00:55:34that there was
00:55:34still more to be
00:55:36uncovered.
00:55:37Devin, on the
00:55:37other hand, stuck
00:55:38to his story and
00:55:39professed his
00:55:40innocence.
00:55:41Did you ever try
00:55:41telling an adult
00:55:42at any point?
00:55:44Yeah, that's when
00:55:44I went to the
00:55:45office to try and
00:55:46tell the adults,
00:55:46and I was going
00:55:47to try and tell
00:55:47Ms. Harper, but
00:55:48he was already in
00:55:49there.
00:55:49After he loaded up
00:55:51guns and brought
00:55:51them to the school?
00:55:51Yes, and he had
00:55:52them loaded up and
00:55:53brought to the
00:55:53school because the
00:55:54thing was, once he
00:55:55made his plan
00:55:55clear and had
00:55:56the ax, I
00:55:57didn't have a way
00:55:58to go to anybody
00:55:58because that was
00:55:59the last time we
00:56:00were at the
00:56:00house.
00:56:00Did it ever
00:56:01cross your mind
00:56:02to tell an adult
00:56:02before that point?
00:56:04No, because I
00:56:06had all these
00:56:06other reasons and
00:56:07all these things he
00:56:08was telling me, and
00:56:09I believed him
00:56:10because he's
00:56:12seeming like he
00:56:13was fine, and
00:56:15he told like he
00:56:16was fine, so I
00:56:19didn't think it
00:56:20was anything to
00:56:21worry about.
00:56:22You didn't think
00:56:22it's anything to
00:56:23worry about when
00:56:23somebody tells you
00:56:24don't come to
00:56:24school tomorrow?
00:56:26I thought he
00:56:26was still like, he
00:56:27was just like, he
00:56:28was still messing
00:56:29with me a little
00:56:29bit.
00:56:30All of us just
00:56:31joke about that
00:56:32stuff.
00:56:32It's just like
00:56:33teenage boys do
00:56:34that stuff.
00:56:35I never thought
00:56:37he would do all
00:56:39that.
00:56:40You realize we
00:56:41were teenage boys?
00:56:41Yeah, I know, I
00:56:43know, but my
00:56:44parents don't really
00:56:44understand that
00:56:45humor, so I just
00:56:46figured I'd say
00:56:46that.
00:56:47I'm sorry.
00:56:47In talking to
00:56:52so many witnesses,
00:56:53it became clear
00:56:54that Devin was
00:56:54known for his
00:56:55dark humor.
00:56:56However, his
00:56:57friend David took
00:56:58it one step
00:56:59further.
00:57:00I wouldn't call
00:57:00him violent, I
00:57:01don't think, right
00:57:02off of the bat,
00:57:02but he has
00:57:05sociopathic
00:57:05tendencies.
00:57:06He's a very
00:57:07cold person.
00:57:08He gets angry
00:57:09really fast, and
00:57:10he's very
00:57:12rational.
00:57:13He would have
00:57:15these bipolar
00:57:16bursts where
00:57:17he would just
00:57:19snap at us,
00:57:20tell us to
00:57:21fuck off or
00:57:21whatever, and
00:57:22he really seemed
00:57:24to victimize
00:57:26himself as soon
00:57:27as any kind of
00:57:28blame was put
00:57:29on him.
00:57:30Very big liar.
00:57:31He's manipulative.
00:57:33I see Devin as
00:57:33a lost cause.
00:57:34This is not
00:57:35your fault.
00:57:36There's nothing
00:57:36you could have
00:57:37done that prevented
00:57:37it, because you
00:57:38seem like a pretty
00:57:39nice guy.
00:57:40Devin made these
00:57:40decisions on his
00:57:41own, and this
00:57:42doesn't come down
00:57:43on you, because
00:57:44keeping it in is
00:57:44going to be the
00:57:45worst thing for
00:57:45you.
00:57:46You're going to
00:57:46have a lot of
00:57:46friends out there
00:57:47that are going
00:57:47through the
00:57:47same exact
00:57:48way.
00:57:48So be there
00:57:50for each
00:57:50other, okay?
00:57:51Check in on
00:57:51each other, and
00:57:53you know, talk
00:57:56to mom.
00:57:56David also
00:57:57shared that Devin
00:57:58had recently
00:57:59broken up with
00:57:59his girlfriend.
00:58:01Another Snapchat
00:58:02saved on Alex's
00:58:03account offered a
00:58:03potential explanation
00:58:05why.
00:58:05Devin was appearing
00:58:13more suspicious by
00:58:14the minute, but the
00:58:15question of his
00:58:16involvement wouldn't
00:58:17be resolved for
00:58:18quite a while.
00:58:20For now, the
00:58:20police were
00:58:21unconvinced by his
00:58:22claims of
00:58:22innocence, and
00:58:23both Devin and
00:58:24Alec were taken
00:58:25to jail.
00:58:26While in the
00:58:27county jail, Devin
00:58:28kept busy with many
00:58:29phone calls, including
00:58:30this fraught interaction
00:58:32with his parents.
00:58:33The only thing
00:58:34was, today was
00:58:35like the
00:58:36Julia and like
00:58:37Dr. Kendall
00:58:38thing was like
00:58:39they were prepping
00:58:39me for the state
00:58:40hospital visit thing,
00:58:42so it was really
00:58:42stressful, because
00:58:44they were like
00:58:44doing like fake,
00:58:45like...
00:58:46Devin, Devin, Devin,
00:58:49let's not talk
00:58:49about that.
00:58:50Guys, this is not
00:58:51about the case.
00:58:53We're allowed to
00:58:53talk about this.
00:58:55I don't know why
00:58:55you're so freaking
00:58:56touchy.
00:58:57I just always want
00:58:59to make sure we
00:58:59take the safe route,
00:59:00that's all.
00:59:01Right, Elder.
00:59:02So, anyways, um...
00:59:05Let's not have one
00:59:05freaking thing with
00:59:06you guys.
00:59:08However, it wasn't
00:59:09just family members
00:59:10that Devin kept
00:59:11up with.
00:59:12It seems that
00:59:12somehow, despite
00:59:13being under lock
00:59:14and key, he began
00:59:15a romantic
00:59:16relationship with
00:59:17a girl named
00:59:18Melanie.
00:59:18You're my baby.
00:59:20You're my
00:59:20son of a doctor.
00:59:22But it wasn't
00:59:23all sunshine and
00:59:24rainbows in that
00:59:25relationship, either.
00:59:26You told me that
00:59:27your love for me
00:59:28was a joke.
00:59:30I don't know why
00:59:30you call me if I
00:59:31make you so
00:59:32miserable.
00:59:33Um, just because
00:59:34it's, um, it
00:59:35seems like fun to
00:59:37like make fun of
00:59:38you sometimes.
00:59:39Say bronchitis
00:59:40without stuttering.
00:59:42Don't hurt.
00:59:43Don't hurt.
00:59:43Don't hurt.
00:59:45Don't hurt.
00:59:45Bronchitis.
00:59:46Bronchitis.
00:59:47Bronchitis.
00:59:47Bronchitis.
00:59:48Bronchitis.
00:59:48Bronchitis.
00:59:49Bronchitis.
00:59:50You stuttered, so.
00:59:52No, I didn't.
00:59:54Okay.
00:59:55Fuck.
00:59:56You're taking
00:59:57advantage of me.
00:59:59You're using me
01:00:01for your
01:00:02entertainment.
01:00:03And
01:00:04entertainment.
01:00:06I thought I had
01:00:07a special place
01:00:08in your heart.
01:00:10Yeah, you do.
01:00:10It's last.
01:00:11I'm going to dump
01:00:13you for
01:00:13pepper pigs
01:00:15if you don't
01:00:16shut up.
01:00:17Oh my god,
01:00:18stop.
01:00:20There are tears
01:00:21on my face
01:00:22right now.
01:00:24Why?
01:00:26Because I don't
01:00:27want that to
01:00:28happen and I'm
01:00:29so confused
01:00:32right now.
01:00:33Devin wasn't
01:00:35the only one
01:00:36who kept
01:00:36in touch
01:00:36with the
01:00:37outside world
01:00:37though.
01:00:38Nine months
01:00:39after Alec
01:00:39and Devin
01:00:40were arrested,
01:00:41Alec reached
01:00:41out to detectives
01:00:42to share
01:00:43additional details
01:00:44about the
01:00:44case.
01:00:45When they
01:00:45got to
01:00:46talking,
01:00:46many of
01:00:47the sinister
01:00:47details the
01:00:48police had
01:00:48suspected all
01:00:49along were
01:00:50finally confirmed.
01:00:51The plan was
01:00:52it was going
01:00:53to look like
01:00:54I was the
01:00:54one that was
01:00:55killing all
01:00:55these people
01:00:56but it was
01:00:57Devin,
01:00:58but it was
01:00:58going to be
01:00:59pinned on me
01:00:59because he
01:01:02was going to
01:01:03shoot me in
01:01:04that he was
01:01:04going to come
01:01:05out like the
01:01:05hero in this
01:01:06situation.
01:01:07He was going
01:01:07to essentially
01:01:09stop me.
01:01:11Why did you
01:01:12do that for
01:01:12Devin?
01:01:14I felt like
01:01:15he was going
01:01:15through a lot
01:01:16of pain in
01:01:16life.
01:01:17I felt like
01:01:18he was going
01:01:18through a lot
01:01:18and I wanted
01:01:19to help him.
01:01:19What if you
01:01:20guys got caught?
01:01:22We didn't
01:01:22think we'd
01:01:23get caught.
01:01:24Or get
01:01:26arrested.
01:01:28Another
01:01:28inconsistency
01:01:29between Alec's
01:01:30new statement
01:01:31and what
01:01:31Devin said
01:01:32in his
01:01:32interview on
01:01:33the day
01:01:33of the
01:01:33shooting
01:01:33emerged
01:01:34when the
01:01:34investigators
01:01:35came to
01:01:36the topic
01:01:36of the
01:01:37firearms.
01:01:38Who loaded
01:01:38the guns?
01:01:39Alec loaded
01:01:40the guns.
01:01:43Why didn't
01:01:43you leave
01:01:44then?
01:01:45Because he
01:01:46had me in
01:01:46the corner
01:01:46of the closet.
01:01:47I was
01:01:48backed up.
01:01:48There was no
01:01:49doors I could
01:01:49go to.
01:01:50He still
01:01:50had the
01:01:50guns.
01:01:51Devin
01:01:54briefly touched
01:01:54on this
01:01:55while talking
01:01:56with Melanie
01:01:56after he
01:01:57was arrested.
01:01:58You put a
01:01:58gun to my
01:01:59head and
01:01:59you shoot
01:02:00up my
01:02:00screw.
01:02:01I'm
01:02:01sorry.
01:02:02Wait,
01:02:03you're not
01:02:03out.
01:02:04If Alec's
01:02:05new story
01:02:05was true,
01:02:06it threatened
01:02:06to undercut
01:02:07Devin's
01:02:08accusations
01:02:08entirely.
01:02:10Any
01:02:10point as
01:02:11this is
01:02:11happening
01:02:11was Devin
01:02:12trying to
01:02:12leave?
01:02:13No.
01:02:14Get out
01:02:14of the
01:02:15closet
01:02:15at all?
01:02:16No.
01:02:17Even on
01:02:17the day
01:02:18of the
01:02:18shooting,
01:02:19the police
01:02:19noticed
01:02:19issues
01:02:20with Devin's
01:02:21story and
01:02:21didn't hesitate
01:02:22to call him
01:02:23out.
01:02:23Why didn't
01:02:24you flee the
01:02:24house?
01:02:25I was in
01:02:25the back of
01:02:25the closet in
01:02:27my mom's
01:02:27room.
01:02:28There's only
01:02:28one door.
01:02:29He was on
01:02:29that side.
01:02:30The safe's
01:02:30laid down in
01:02:31the middle.
01:02:31I'm on the
01:02:32other side of
01:02:32the safe.
01:02:33He told me to
01:02:33stay on that
01:02:34side.
01:02:34What I don't
01:02:35understand is
01:02:35how is he
01:02:36loading the
01:02:36gun?
01:02:37Because he
01:02:39made me give
01:02:39him the
01:02:39bullets while
01:02:40still holding
01:02:40the hatchet
01:02:41because he
01:02:41grabbed the
01:02:41guns with
01:02:42his other
01:02:42hand and
01:02:43that's when
01:02:44he made
01:02:44me hand
01:02:44him the
01:02:44ammo.
01:02:45He told
01:02:45me to
01:02:45sit down
01:02:46still holding
01:02:46the hatchet,
01:02:47put one
01:02:47bullet in
01:02:48and put it
01:02:48in the
01:02:48magazine and
01:02:49cocked it so
01:02:50there was one
01:02:50in the
01:02:50chamber he
01:02:51could aim
01:02:51at me.
01:02:52Devin
01:02:52insisted he
01:02:53was innocent
01:02:54but something
01:02:54else he said
01:02:55that day led
01:02:56the police to
01:02:56believe he
01:02:57was anything
01:02:58but.
01:02:58The only way
01:02:59I'd let
01:02:59him live is
01:03:00if he
01:03:01helped me.
01:03:02It's possible
01:03:02that Devin
01:03:03just got
01:03:03tongue-tied
01:03:04but police
01:03:05had to
01:03:05wonder if
01:03:06this was
01:03:06the truth
01:03:07slipping
01:03:07through
01:03:07accidentally.
01:03:09So a lot
01:03:09of this to
01:03:10me sounds
01:03:10like self
01:03:10preservation.
01:03:12Then why
01:03:13do I have
01:03:13videos of
01:03:14him threatening
01:03:14me and why
01:03:15do I have
01:03:15all the
01:03:16evidence?
01:03:17If you
01:03:17find his
01:03:18iPhone you
01:03:18will see a
01:03:19video of
01:03:19me crying
01:03:20while he
01:03:21makes me
01:03:22do that.
01:03:23This kid
01:03:24gave me
01:03:24cocaine and
01:03:25you're expecting
01:03:25me to think
01:03:26straight?
01:03:29Before you
01:03:29did cocaine.
01:03:30I'm freaking
01:03:30the out dude.
01:03:32Again Devin
01:03:33said something
01:03:33during one
01:03:34of his
01:03:34jail calls
01:03:35that made
01:03:35this defense
01:03:36even more
01:03:37questionable.
01:03:38The cocaine
01:03:38made me
01:03:39aggressive.
01:03:40I was like
01:03:41literally about
01:03:42to do
01:03:42shrooms one
01:03:43night and
01:03:44then Alex
01:03:44sent me a
01:03:45picture of
01:03:46like want
01:03:46to come
01:03:46do cocaine
01:03:47and I was
01:03:48like sure.
01:03:49I'm so glad
01:03:50I started
01:03:50doing cocaine
01:03:51because that
01:03:51was great
01:03:52for me.
01:03:52Can't wait
01:03:5310 years
01:03:53off my
01:03:54lifespan.
01:03:55In fact
01:03:55Devin claimed
01:03:56that his
01:03:56substance use
01:03:57history was
01:03:58far more
01:03:58extensive than
01:03:59he'd initially
01:03:59let on.
01:04:00I think I
01:04:01like smoked
01:04:01too much
01:04:02weed and
01:04:03like I
01:04:03permanently
01:04:04did that
01:04:04to my
01:04:04brain.
01:04:05I was
01:04:05high on
01:04:06cough
01:04:06medication
01:04:06like
01:04:07every
01:04:07day
01:04:07for
01:04:08like
01:04:08four
01:04:08months
01:04:08straight.
01:04:09On another
01:04:09occasion
01:04:10Devin said
01:04:11that Alec
01:04:11talked him
01:04:12through a
01:04:12particularly
01:04:12intense
01:04:13trip
01:04:13that
01:04:14included
01:04:14some
01:04:14very
01:04:15dangerous
01:04:15decisions.
01:04:16And so
01:04:17basically
01:04:17Alec was
01:04:18like I'm
01:04:18going to
01:04:18stay on
01:04:19the call
01:04:19with you
01:04:20so you
01:04:20can
01:04:20talk
01:04:20to me
01:04:21through
01:04:21this.
01:04:22And so
01:04:22he just
01:04:24talked to
01:04:24me and I
01:04:25drove all
01:04:26the way
01:04:26home.
01:04:27Nine
01:04:27months
01:04:27later in
01:04:28Alec's
01:04:28second
01:04:28interview,
01:04:29Devin's
01:04:30so-called
01:04:30video
01:04:31evidence
01:04:31is brought
01:04:32into
01:04:32question
01:04:32in a
01:04:33discussion
01:04:33with the
01:04:34investigators.
01:04:35The videos
01:04:35that he made
01:04:36in the
01:04:36house,
01:04:37that was,
01:04:38tell me
01:04:39again why.
01:04:40So it
01:04:41would all
01:04:41come
01:04:41together
01:04:42in the
01:04:42plan
01:04:42that oh
01:04:42I have
01:04:43proof
01:04:43in case
01:04:44he didn't
01:04:45come out
01:04:45there or
01:04:46I had
01:04:46proof
01:04:46that or
01:04:48he had
01:04:48proof
01:04:48that I
01:04:50made him
01:04:50do it.
01:04:50Okay.
01:04:52To make
01:04:53it seem
01:04:53like he
01:04:53was forced
01:04:54into this.
01:04:55Okay.
01:04:56Was he
01:04:57forced
01:04:57into this?
01:04:58No.
01:04:58It was a
01:04:59mutual
01:04:59agreement.
01:05:01Took us
01:05:01a couple
01:05:01times,
01:05:02like three
01:05:02times to
01:05:03actually shoot
01:05:03this video.
01:05:04Okay.
01:05:05The first
01:05:05time we
01:05:08were laughing
01:05:08and we
01:05:09couldn't get
01:05:09it like
01:05:10through the
01:05:10video and
01:05:11then the
01:05:11second time
01:05:12it was
01:05:13like I
01:05:14just didn't
01:05:14think it
01:05:14was convincing
01:05:14enough and
01:05:15the third
01:05:15time I was
01:05:15like this
01:05:16is good
01:05:16enough.
01:05:17So after
01:05:17the video
01:05:18was shot
01:05:18are you
01:05:19still holding
01:05:20a gun to
01:05:20his head
01:05:21or do you
01:05:22put it
01:05:22down and
01:05:22you guys
01:05:23are you
01:05:23know buddy
01:05:24buddy again?
01:05:26No I
01:05:26put the gun
01:05:27away.
01:05:27The gun
01:05:28was on safety
01:05:28the whole
01:05:28time.
01:05:29Okay.
01:05:29I wasn't
01:05:30going to
01:05:30shoot him.
01:05:33He was
01:05:33talking about
01:05:34how he
01:05:35has two
01:05:36alter egos
01:05:37two like
01:05:38split personalities
01:05:38I don't know
01:05:39and he was
01:05:40saying that
01:05:41one of them
01:05:42is like the
01:05:43pussy Devon
01:05:44one of them's
01:05:44like the
01:05:45wimp Devon
01:05:46and the other
01:05:46one's like
01:05:47has a god
01:05:47complex.
01:05:48after that
01:05:48we were
01:05:49hugging
01:05:50and I
01:05:50was saying
01:05:50goodbye
01:05:51to him
01:05:51he said
01:05:52he was
01:05:52glad he
01:05:52met me
01:05:53and he
01:05:54is sorry
01:05:55he's never
01:05:56going to
01:05:56see me
01:05:56again.
01:05:57During Devon's
01:05:58interview on
01:05:58the day of
01:05:59the shooting
01:05:59the police
01:06:00had noticed
01:06:00yet another
01:06:01inconsistency.
01:06:02So how many
01:06:05times did you
01:06:05say you've
01:06:06been shooting?
01:06:07Maybe like
01:06:08four times
01:06:08total.
01:06:09Okay.
01:06:11So knowing
01:06:11that how
01:06:13did Kendrick
01:06:14get shot?
01:06:15Kendrick got
01:06:16shot because my
01:06:17finger was right
01:06:17there still.
01:06:18I was still
01:06:19grabbing it.
01:06:20My finger's
01:06:20right there.
01:06:21He bumps
01:06:21into me because
01:06:22they're rushing
01:06:22me and they're
01:06:23actually hitting
01:06:24the barrel end
01:06:24of the gun
01:06:25with their
01:06:25body and
01:06:26grabbing me.
01:06:27was your finger
01:06:28on the trigger?
01:06:29My finger was
01:06:29next to the trigger
01:06:30but it wasn't
01:06:30over the trigger
01:06:31because I wasn't
01:06:31going to hurt
01:06:32anybody.
01:06:32I was just
01:06:33going to tell
01:06:34everyone to
01:06:35stay and then
01:06:35run.
01:06:39So I tried
01:06:40to throw it
01:06:40down.
01:06:41What was
01:06:41going through
01:06:42my head was
01:06:42should I kill
01:06:44myself to save
01:06:45these people?
01:06:47Do you mind
01:06:47if we take a
01:06:48break?
01:06:48Absolutely.
01:06:50Do you need
01:06:51any water or
01:06:52anything?
01:06:52We'll step out
01:06:53the secure
01:06:54building so we've
01:06:55got to walk
01:06:55anybody anywhere
01:06:56we go.
01:06:57Okay.
01:06:58But we'll just
01:06:58be outside.
01:07:02Police likely
01:07:03had to wonder
01:07:04if any show
01:07:04of emotion
01:07:05since the day
01:07:06of the incident
01:07:06was ever
01:07:07genuine.
01:07:08Why didn't
01:07:08you just
01:07:09open the door
01:07:09and say
01:07:10Alex got a
01:07:10gun get
01:07:11out?
01:07:12Because he
01:07:12was still
01:07:13going to
01:07:13shoot people
01:07:13like that.
01:07:13But you
01:07:14knew he
01:07:14was going
01:07:14to shoot
01:07:15somebody
01:07:15either way.
01:07:16But I
01:07:17was going
01:07:17to try
01:07:17to stop
01:07:18him.
01:07:18That's
01:07:18why I
01:07:18went to
01:07:18the office
01:07:19so I
01:07:19could
01:07:19try to
01:07:19get to
01:07:20an
01:07:20adult
01:07:20who
01:07:20would
01:07:20be
01:07:21able
01:07:21to
01:07:21do
01:07:21it
01:07:21so
01:07:22the
01:07:22school
01:07:22didn't
01:07:22like
01:07:23people
01:07:23weren't
01:07:23just
01:07:23freaking
01:07:24out.
01:07:24But you
01:07:25still
01:07:25didn't
01:07:25tell
01:07:26anybody.
01:07:26Yes,
01:07:27because he
01:07:27told me
01:07:28he was
01:07:28going to
01:07:28the office
01:07:29because he
01:07:29was going
01:07:29to kill
01:07:30me and
01:07:31everybody
01:07:32inside the
01:07:32office.
01:07:33Does it
01:07:33matter?
01:07:34It does
01:07:36matter because
01:07:36I was trying
01:07:36to save
01:07:37everybody,
01:07:38not just
01:07:38me.
01:07:39After
01:07:39composing,
01:07:40Alex said
01:07:40something else
01:07:41that,
01:07:41if validated,
01:07:42obliterated
01:07:43Devin's
01:07:44previous
01:07:44claims.
01:07:45Did he
01:07:46ever tell
01:07:46you,
01:07:46hey,
01:07:47I can't
01:07:47go through
01:07:48with this,
01:07:48I'm going
01:07:48to refuse
01:07:49to go
01:07:49through
01:07:49with this,
01:07:50I'm
01:07:51backing
01:07:51out,
01:07:52anything
01:07:52like that?
01:07:53You
01:07:53never
01:07:53told me
01:07:54anything
01:07:54like that?
01:07:55It wasn't
01:07:55just what
01:07:56Devin
01:07:56hadn't
01:07:57done that
01:07:57led
01:07:57investigators
01:07:58to suspect
01:07:58that he'd
01:07:59helped
01:07:59instigate
01:08:00the crime.
01:08:01Mr.
01:08:01Pritchard,
01:08:02who had
01:08:02tried to
01:08:03save
01:08:03Kendrick,
01:08:04discovered
01:08:04this
01:08:04disturbing
01:08:05footage of
01:08:06Devin
01:08:06leaving the
01:08:06office and
01:08:07meeting up
01:08:07with
01:08:08Alec.
01:08:17He said,
01:08:18like,
01:08:18let's go
01:08:18or something.
01:08:19In his
01:08:20interview,
01:08:20soon after
01:08:21the incident,
01:08:22the detectives
01:08:22had tried
01:08:23to get
01:08:23the truth
01:08:24from Devin,
01:08:25but he
01:08:25wouldn't
01:08:25budge.
01:08:26So again,
01:08:27at what
01:08:27point did
01:08:28you try
01:08:28to stop
01:08:29him?
01:08:31There was
01:08:31multiple
01:08:31times he
01:08:32just kept
01:08:32threatening
01:08:33me.
01:08:33Not what
01:08:34I'm hearing.
01:08:34That's
01:08:35exactly what
01:08:35you're
01:08:36hearing.
01:08:36Literally,
01:08:37you're
01:08:37separated.
01:08:37I'm not
01:08:38talking to
01:08:38you guys
01:08:39anymore
01:08:39until I
01:08:39have a
01:08:39lawyer
01:08:40and
01:08:40my
01:08:40dad.
01:08:40Get
01:08:40him
01:08:41in
01:08:41here
01:08:41because
01:08:41you
01:08:41guys
01:08:41aren't
01:08:42listening
01:08:42to
01:08:42me.
01:08:42I'm
01:08:42telling
01:08:43you
01:08:43something.
01:08:43I
01:08:43have
01:08:50since
01:08:51Devin
01:08:51wanted
01:08:52to speak
01:08:52with a
01:08:52lawyer
01:08:53back
01:08:53then,
01:08:53the
01:08:54detectives
01:08:54departed,
01:08:55leaving him
01:08:55alone in
01:08:56the interrogation
01:08:57room where
01:08:57his pleas
01:08:58of innocence
01:08:59continued.
01:09:07In the
01:09:08interview
01:09:08now,
01:09:09Alec's
01:09:10story
01:09:10included
01:09:10even
01:09:11more
01:09:11drastic
01:09:12changes.
01:09:12Mitchell,
01:09:20the student
01:09:21Devin had
01:09:21a verbal
01:09:21altercation
01:09:22with,
01:09:22had been
01:09:23in room
01:09:23107,
01:09:24but that
01:09:25wasn't
01:09:25all.
01:09:26Mitchell
01:09:26said that
01:09:27Devin
01:09:27disliked
01:09:28Ms.
01:09:28Harper
01:09:28because she
01:09:29demanded
01:09:29her students
01:09:30make an
01:09:30effort in
01:09:31class.
01:09:32Alec's
01:09:33statement
01:09:33seemed to
01:09:33support the
01:09:34theory that
01:09:34the attack
01:09:35was very
01:09:36carefully
01:09:36timed.
01:09:37The only
01:09:37person I
01:09:38really,
01:09:38truly remember
01:09:39shooting at
01:09:39is Mitchell.
01:09:41As it
01:09:50turned out,
01:09:50Alec's
01:09:51aim was
01:09:51true.
01:09:52Mitchell
01:09:53had given
01:09:53his statement
01:09:54to police
01:09:54from a
01:09:55hospital bed
01:09:55after the
01:09:56incident.
01:09:56I remember
01:09:57just after
01:09:58the first
01:09:58gunshot,
01:10:00I remember
01:10:00standing up
01:10:01and running.
01:10:02I remember
01:10:03more gunshots,
01:10:04I remember
01:10:04falling over.
01:10:05I run towards
01:10:06that door,
01:10:07and I
01:10:07passed Kendrick,
01:10:08and he's
01:10:08laying down,
01:10:09face down,
01:10:10not moving.
01:10:11He told
01:10:14police that
01:10:15he and
01:10:15several other
01:10:16students fled
01:10:17through the
01:10:17cafeteria and
01:10:18out of the
01:10:18school.
01:10:19I run
01:10:20past,
01:10:22I want to
01:10:23say,
01:10:23four buildings
01:10:24before I'm
01:10:25out of breath.
01:10:26I'm like,
01:10:26this is so
01:10:26weird,
01:10:27why am I
01:10:27out of breath?
01:10:28And then I
01:10:29reached behind
01:10:29me and
01:10:30feel my back.
01:10:30I pull my
01:10:32hand forward,
01:10:33and there's
01:10:33blood there.
01:10:34I didn't
01:10:35know that I
01:10:35got shot.
01:10:36Mitchell's
01:10:37classmates
01:10:37had applied
01:10:38pressure to
01:10:38the wound and
01:10:39called 911.
01:10:40When more
01:10:41shots were
01:10:41fired,
01:10:42later determined
01:10:43to have been
01:10:43fired by Sam,
01:10:44a good
01:10:45Samaritan had
01:10:46helped move
01:10:46the group
01:10:46inside to
01:10:47the safety
01:10:48of his
01:10:48house.
01:10:49Paramedics
01:10:49arrived shortly
01:10:50afterwards to
01:10:51take Mitchell
01:10:51to the
01:10:52hospital.
01:10:53Back with
01:10:53Alec,
01:10:54police learned
01:10:54even more
01:10:55about Devin's
01:10:55involvement in
01:10:56the lead-up to
01:10:57the crime.
01:10:57Did you
01:10:58guys do
01:10:59any other
01:11:00sort of
01:11:01research into
01:11:02how to
01:11:03carry this
01:11:04plan out?
01:11:05Not to
01:11:05how to
01:11:06carry the
01:11:06plan out.
01:11:07It was
01:11:07when Sol
01:11:08Pais came
01:11:09to Colorado
01:11:10and we
01:11:11heard that
01:11:12she had
01:11:12Columbine
01:11:13tattoos.
01:11:14That's
01:11:14kind of
01:11:14when we
01:11:14started
01:11:14searching
01:11:15up Columbine.
01:11:16It wasn't
01:11:17to execute
01:11:17this plan.
01:11:18It was
01:11:18just kind
01:11:19of trying
01:11:19to put
01:11:19the two
01:11:20and two
01:11:20together
01:11:20with Sol
01:11:21Pais and
01:11:22the Columbine.
01:11:23Sol Pais was
01:11:24a student who
01:11:25received national
01:11:25attention when she
01:11:26became the
01:11:27subject of
01:11:27a large
01:11:28FBI manhunt
01:11:29after she
01:11:29was found
01:11:30armed in
01:11:30Colorado on
01:11:31the 20th
01:11:32anniversary of
01:11:33the Columbine
01:11:33school shooting.
01:11:35Given her
01:11:35obsession with
01:11:36that incident,
01:11:37police believed
01:11:38she was
01:11:38planning a
01:11:39copycat
01:11:39massacre at
01:11:40Columbine
01:11:40school on
01:11:41its anniversary.
01:11:43Facebook
01:11:43records indicated
01:11:44that Devin
01:11:45and Alec had
01:11:45discussed Sol
01:11:46Pais at
01:11:47length,
01:11:48even sending
01:11:48each other
01:11:49screenshots of
01:11:50her website
01:11:50and Instagram.
01:11:52Follow-up
01:11:52investigation had
01:11:53revealed even
01:11:54more on the
01:11:55subject of
01:11:55Columbine on
01:11:56Alec's
01:11:56Snapchat.
01:11:57Tomorrow is
01:11:59the 20th
01:12:00anniversary of
01:12:00the Columbine
01:12:01shooting.
01:12:01It's like,
01:12:02geez,
01:12:03everything's
01:12:03going on in
01:12:04one week.
01:12:05In hindsight,
01:12:05it seems
01:12:06disturbingly
01:12:07obvious why
01:12:07Alec saved
01:12:08this clip.
01:12:09Unfortunately,
01:12:10the video did
01:12:11not reveal who
01:12:12the speaker
01:12:12was.
01:12:13The police
01:12:14knew by now
01:12:15that Devin's
01:12:15interest in
01:12:16Columbine was
01:12:16not the only
01:12:17red flag.
01:12:18Back in the
01:12:19early days of
01:12:20the investigation,
01:12:21one of Devin's
01:12:22former classmates,
01:12:23Brian, had
01:12:24shared some
01:12:24chilling information.
01:12:25Back in the
01:12:46present with
01:12:46Alec, the
01:12:47police had a
01:12:48few more
01:12:48things they
01:12:49wanted to
01:12:49follow up on.
01:12:50In the
01:12:51interview with
01:12:52Detective
01:12:52Williamson,
01:12:52you mentioned
01:12:53something about
01:12:53Gamer Boat.
01:12:55Yes.
01:12:55Anything else?
01:12:57Um, I think
01:12:59it was
01:12:59Blobfish.
01:13:01Blobfish?
01:13:02Blob.
01:13:03Blobfish.
01:13:03I'm sorry.
01:13:04Blobfish.
01:13:05What is that?
01:13:07Um, that was
01:13:08going to be
01:13:08code word for
01:13:09Devin's
01:13:10shoot me.
01:13:11This memory
01:13:11was recovered
01:13:12from Alec's
01:13:13Snapchat, proving
01:13:14that they had
01:13:14in fact used
01:13:15the code word.
01:13:16Blobfish.
01:13:19If this really
01:13:20was what the
01:13:21code word
01:13:21meant, it
01:13:22seemed that
01:13:23on the day
01:13:23of the
01:13:23crime, Devin
01:13:24would have
01:13:25had to
01:13:25know he
01:13:25would be
01:13:26shooting, if
01:13:27only at
01:13:27Alec, all
01:13:28along.
01:13:29Nine months
01:13:29later, in
01:13:30Alec's new
01:13:31version of
01:13:31events, Devin
01:13:32was responsible
01:13:33for more than
01:13:34just the
01:13:34school shooting.
01:13:36I was doing
01:13:36coke in the
01:13:37bathroom, and
01:13:38I came back,
01:13:39and he was
01:13:40like, he
01:13:41didn't have
01:13:41any clothes
01:13:42on.
01:13:42He had
01:13:42his boxers
01:13:43on, and
01:13:43that was it.
01:13:44He was
01:13:44sitting with
01:13:45his mom's
01:13:45nail polish
01:13:46and painting
01:13:46something about
01:13:49the voices
01:13:50in the
01:13:51corner of
01:13:52the closet.
01:13:54Alec stated
01:13:54that it had
01:13:55been Devin's
01:13:56idea to
01:13:56vandalize
01:13:57his mother's
01:13:57car, and
01:13:58that still
01:13:59wasn't all.
01:14:00Did you guys
01:14:01ever have a
01:14:01conversation
01:14:02about locking
01:14:04the doors?
01:14:05We did
01:14:06have a
01:14:06conversation
01:14:06about taking
01:14:07the magnet
01:14:07strip off
01:14:08the doors.
01:14:09With the
01:14:09security
01:14:10compromised
01:14:10at school,
01:14:11protecting
01:14:12everyone inside
01:14:13was the
01:14:13top priority.
01:14:15This was
01:14:15one of the
01:14:16main topics
01:14:16Sam discussed
01:14:17with the
01:14:17police.
01:14:18He said
01:14:19that STEM
01:14:19school was
01:14:20the only
01:14:20location where
01:14:21he was
01:14:21directed to
01:14:22not be
01:14:22armed, which
01:14:23felt odd
01:14:24to him.
01:14:25He chose
01:14:25to carry
01:14:26his weapon
01:14:26anyway with
01:14:27the intention
01:14:27of protecting
01:14:28as many
01:14:28students as
01:14:29possible in
01:14:29the event
01:14:30of violence.
01:14:32Despite
01:14:32saving lives
01:14:33on May 7th,
01:14:34Sam still
01:14:35expressed regret
01:14:36that he did
01:14:37not do
01:14:37more.
01:14:38I guess
01:14:39one kid
01:14:40was just
01:14:40reported
01:14:40dead.
01:14:41Yeah.
01:14:42Yeah.
01:14:44Yep.
01:14:46So,
01:14:47I,
01:14:48do the best
01:14:49I can,
01:14:49man.
01:14:50I don't
01:14:50have any
01:14:51doubt that
01:14:52you,
01:14:53by your
01:14:54actions,
01:14:55saved lives.
01:14:56Oh yeah,
01:14:56you took,
01:14:57you took
01:14:57literally one
01:14:58of the two
01:14:59shooters out.
01:15:00I guess I could
01:15:01save all of them,
01:15:02man.
01:15:02Surprisingly,
01:15:03Devin had
01:15:03reached out
01:15:04to police
01:15:05nine months
01:15:05ago,
01:15:06the day
01:15:06after he
01:15:07ended his
01:15:07first interrogation
01:15:08by asking
01:15:09for a lawyer.
01:15:10All I
01:15:11can think
01:15:11about is
01:15:12Kendrick
01:15:12and everybody
01:15:15else
01:15:16who's looking
01:15:18to gunshots.
01:15:21They keep
01:15:21hearing the
01:15:22gunshots.
01:15:25Devin,
01:15:25are you
01:15:26aware that
01:15:26this was
01:15:27all over the
01:15:28media?
01:15:29I assumed
01:15:30it would
01:15:31be,
01:15:31yeah.
01:15:32so this
01:15:37might be
01:15:37your last
01:15:38opportunity
01:15:38to kind
01:15:39of tell
01:15:39the world
01:15:40what happened.
01:15:41Yeah,
01:15:42that's what
01:15:43I'm doing.
01:15:46Did you
01:15:47help
01:15:47Alex carry
01:15:48this through?
01:15:52Only the
01:15:52perks he
01:15:53made me.
01:15:54At any
01:15:54point,
01:15:55did you
01:15:55plan on
01:15:55doing what
01:15:57Alex told
01:15:57you?
01:15:58No,
01:15:58no point
01:15:59did I
01:16:00plan on
01:16:00going through
01:16:01this plan?
01:16:02When asked
01:16:02about the
01:16:02perspective
01:16:03now,
01:16:04Alec had
01:16:04this to
01:16:05say.
01:16:06I've
01:16:06changed my
01:16:07perspective on
01:16:09change on
01:16:09my perspective
01:16:10has changed
01:16:11on me
01:16:11trying to
01:16:12protect
01:16:12Devin and
01:16:13I need
01:16:13to keep
01:16:15my promises.
01:16:16Who are you
01:16:16talking about
01:16:17in terms of
01:16:17your promises?
01:16:18I'm not
01:16:26crazy guys.
01:16:27This is
01:16:27I talk to
01:16:28Kendrick
01:16:28a lot.
01:16:37I promised
01:16:38that I would
01:16:39do good for
01:16:39him.
01:16:43I promised
01:16:44to help
01:16:45everyone
01:16:46that I
01:16:46can for
01:16:46him.
01:16:48I promised
01:16:48I'm
01:16:48going to
01:16:49change
01:16:50for the
01:16:50better
01:16:50for him.
01:16:54In
01:16:542020,
01:16:55Alec McKinney
01:16:56was sentenced
01:16:56to life
01:16:57in prison,
01:16:58plus 38
01:16:59years after
01:17:00pleading
01:17:00guilty on
01:17:00several
01:17:01charges.
01:17:02Alec was
01:17:03ultimately
01:17:03convicted of
01:17:0411 charges,
01:17:05including but
01:17:06not limited to
01:17:07murder after
01:17:07deliberation,
01:17:09murder with
01:17:09extreme
01:17:10indifference,
01:17:11attempted
01:17:11murder,
01:17:12and possession
01:17:12of a weapon
01:17:13on school
01:17:13grounds.
01:17:15Subsequently,
01:17:16Devin and
01:17:16Melanie did
01:17:16a lot of
01:17:17theorizing over
01:17:18the phone
01:17:18regarding what
01:17:19his fate would
01:17:19be.
01:17:20There was no
01:17:21overkill.
01:17:22You, like,
01:17:22that one kid
01:17:23said you fought,
01:17:24but, like,
01:17:24no one else
01:17:24said you fought
01:17:25back, which,
01:17:26like, obviously
01:17:26you didn't,
01:17:27but, like,
01:17:27there's a lot
01:17:28of things that,
01:17:29like, show
01:17:29that you're not,
01:17:30like, a violent
01:17:31person.
01:17:32Yeah, I wish,
01:17:33like, I wish the
01:17:33DA would just
01:17:34give me a deal
01:17:35so I didn't have
01:17:35to go to trial
01:17:36so I could just,
01:17:37like,
01:17:38skirt, skirt.
01:17:39Call is recorded
01:17:39and monitored,
01:17:40so, uh,
01:17:41DA Brockler,
01:17:42if you're listening,
01:17:43I'll vote for you.
01:17:44Wait, have I
01:17:45told you that
01:17:45I'm saluted
01:17:46with my parents
01:17:46that I'm gonna
01:17:47get out in,
01:17:48like, three years?
01:17:49I mean,
01:17:50that'd be sick,
01:17:51but, no.
01:17:52It's not gonna
01:17:53happen.
01:17:54No, it's not.
01:17:56Melanie was
01:17:57right.
01:17:57On September
01:17:5817, 2021,
01:18:00Devin Erickson
01:18:00was sentenced

01:18:23The robotics lab
01:18:24at STEM School
01:18:25has since been
01:18:26renamed in honor
01:18:27of Kendrick.
01:18:28His heroic actions
01:18:29meant that his
01:18:30was the only life
01:18:31lost that day
01:18:32at STEM.
01:18:34His parents
01:18:34still visit his grave
01:18:36every day.
01:18:37The other eight victims
01:18:38all physically recovered,
01:18:39though the psychological
01:18:40impact on everyone
01:18:42at STEM
01:18:42is incomprehensible.
01:18:44and the other
