Join us on Life with No Anchor as we explore the breathtaking Lake Albacutya Silo Art, a vibrant addition to Victoria's world-famous silo art trail. Located just 10km north of Rainbow in Victoria's northwest, this spectacular installation showcases Melbourne artist Kitt Bennett's playful and colorful interpretation of rural childhood memories.

Completed in May 2021, the Lake Albacutya silo is the first in Hindmarsh Shire to join the expanding Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail, creating a vital tourism link between the Yarriambiack and West Wimmera silos. This monumental artwork transforms agricultural infrastructure into a cultural landmark that celebrates community pride and rural Australian identity.

Kitt Bennett's masterpiece features a boy on a dirt bike and a woman with a yabby, imagery that perfectly captures nostalgic childhood adventures in the Australian countryside. What makes this artwork so distinctive is its deliberate departure from realism. As Bennett explains, "I wanted to keep the artwork somewhat surreal and distorted from reality. Much like the nature of stories from the past, they often become exaggerated."

The artist chose a palette bursting with bright colors, intentionally reflecting the "Rainbow" theme of the nearby town while creating a striking contrast with the surrounding landscape. "I wanted to make this painting very bright and full of color in an attempt to reflect the rainbow theme and to separate it from its environment," Bennett shares. "The Silo itself is old but the artwork aims to breathe new life into the landscape."

This project was made possible through funding from the Victorian State Government as part of the "Wimmera Southern Mallee Destination Management Plan," with support from Wimmera Mallee Tourism and Hindmarsh Shire Council.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Ron Ismay praised Bennett's work, noting, "The vivid colors and style add a distinctive modern take on the silo art trail. It is great to see the fun of growing up in the Mallee represented in the art along with a nod to Lake Albacutya's past as a great place to catch yabbies."

Visitors can enjoy this spectacular artwork from a designated viewing area, where information signage provides context about both the artwork and the broader silo art trail. An augmented reality experience is also being developed to enhance the quirky, playful nature of Bennett's creation.

The Australian Silo Art Trail has become a cultural phenomenon, transforming rural communities across Victoria and Australia. These massive outdoor galleries draw thousands of visitors annually, breathing new economic life into small towns while preserving their agricultural heritage. Lake Albacutya's addition to this trail represents the perfect blend of modern artistic expression and rural nostalgia.
