00:00Have you ever heard of a creature with eyes as big as a soccer ball and hooks on its tentacles?

00:06It lives deep in the ocean where sunlight never reaches. This creature is called the

00:11colossal squid, one of the biggest and most mysterious animals in the world.

00:15Today we will explore everything we know about this amazing sea monster.

00:20The colossal squid, also called Mesinocytutus hamiltoni,

00:24lives in the cold waters near Antarctica. Scientists first found parts of it in 1925

00:30inside a sperm whale's stomach. Since then only a few have been seen or caught.

00:35That's why it's still one of the most unknown animals in the ocean.

00:40The colossal squid is very huge, it can grow up to 46 feet long and weigh up to 750 kg.

00:47It has a big soft body called a mantle, eight arms and two longer tentacles.

00:52These tentacles have sharp hooks that can turn, which help it catch food.

00:57Its eyes are the largest in the animal kingdom, about the size of a soccer ball.

01:02These big eyes help it see in the dark waters of the deep sea.

01:06The colossal squid lives deep in the southern ocean, around 1000 to 2000 meters under the sea.

01:13That's really very deep, almost like stacking five Eiffel Towers.

01:17It's a quiet animal that usually waits for food to come close before attacking.

01:22Because it lives so deep, it moves slowly to save energy.

01:26Even though it's slow, the colossal squid is a strong hunter.

01:30It eats big fish like the Patagonian tooth fish and other squids.

01:35Scientists found squid beaks in whale's stomach and bite marks on fish,

01:39showing that the squid is a smart and powerful predator.

01:43But even this joint has enemies.

01:45Its biggest predator is the sperm whale, which often has scars from fighting the squid.

01:51We still don't know much about how colossal squids mate and have babies.

01:55Scientists believe the female squid may lay millions of eggs,

01:59but no one has ever seen a male squid fully grown in the wild.

02:03This makes it even more mysterious.

02:05For the first time, scientists filmed a live colossal squid in its natural home

02:10near the South Sandwich Island.

02:12It was a young squid, and it had a see-through body with small hooks.
