00:00In today's video, get ready to relive a classic moment from West Indies Cricket history.
00:05We are taking you back to my third 1997.
00:08When the fiery West Indians opener, Stuart Williams delivered a match-winning performance
00:12in East India in the fourth ODI at Bridgetown in Barbados.
00:17Stuart Williams played with grit and flair, scoring a brilliant 78 runs of 137 balls.
00:23Spending 176 minutes at the crease and smashing 10 elegant boundaries, it was an innings full
00:29of class, confidence and Caribbean flair.
00:32But he did not do it alone.
00:34Alongside him was the ever-reliable Shiv Narayan Chanderpaul, and together they built a rock-solid
00:40opening partnership that set the tone for a dominant West Indies victory.
00:44This memorable knock not only showcased toward Williams' potential, but also helped the
00:49West Indies to cruise an emphatic 10-wicket victory over a strong Indian side.
00:54It was one of those days when everything clicked, timing, placement and pure determination.
00:59So sit back, rewind time and let the nostalgia hit as we revisit this unforgettable innings.
01:05Whether you watched it live back then or are seeing it for the first time now, you are
01:09in for a treat.
01:10Let the Caribbean magic unfold once again.
01:15It is going to be a bit of movement with this brand new ball.
01:18The Indian fast bowlers have been hitting the seam consistently throughout this season,
01:23and I expect that they will do so again here in this game, and just turn off grass to encourage
01:28them.
01:29Good delivery.
01:30Good delivery.
01:31That opening delivery from Venkatesh Passat.
01:34So beautifully timed again by Stuart Williams.
01:37Well pitched up delivery.
01:39Making it into a full toss and timing it beautifully through the onside.
01:40Just using timing to very good effect.
01:54So beautifully timed again by Stuart Williams.
01:57Well pitched up delivery.
01:59Making it into a full toss and timing it beautifully through the onside.
02:04Seems like Benkattish Passard was looking for the Yorker on that occasion.
02:11Not quite getting it.
02:18That's better directed that Yorker.
02:21Far better length.
02:23One overgone, it's four without loss.
02:30Not too much wrong with that, it's a beautiful square drive.
02:33Off the edge, but quite safe.
02:47And they'll pick up three.
02:53Down the ground, that's hit with tremendous power.
02:56Tremendous power.
03:00Is this shot so far Stuart Williams?
03:05Yes, he likes Barbados Stuart Williams.
03:06He likes the ball coming on because he hits quite a bit on the up.
03:10He's a sweet timer of the ball.
03:12Oh, it's up.
03:14Next to him, he is a foul.
03:15The ball's out.
03:16Take appeal for a neck behind.
03:17Not really from the bowler, in fact very late from the bowler.
03:18But the keeper was sitting.
03:20Well, he misjudged the length, Stuart Williams, he was looking to go forward, there he is,
03:43looking to come down, then he changed his mind, but certainly we would have no way of knowing
03:49whether he nicked that 100 yards or...
03:55Now, through the onside, and right through the onside, just a little bit down leg side, Stuart Williams takes toll.
04:03The West Indies are cruising along at 80 for no wicket.
04:06Grease.
04:11And beautifully tined by Williams on the onside, another boundary.
04:14The boundary is coming, second pass for the West Indians.
04:19This is a very good batting pitch.
04:24Quite different from the ones that the Indians had to play on the last year of the test match here.
04:29And Ganguly's pace is just ideal, because the ball's coming on at...
04:34At...
04:35At...
04:36At...
04:37At...
04:38At...
04:39At...
04:40He'll have to hurry here, and had Tendulka hit, Williams would have been in trouble.
04:44So Stuart Williams...
04:45Gets his home soft century for the second time, with that drive before, and he can smile again.
04:51Well he's got that away...
04:52...
05:01Well he's got that away...
05:04And he can smile again.
05:16Well, he's got that away.
05:18Half-stall at the very middle of the back,
05:20but sufficient of it to get four of the last ball to be over.
05:23It's 141 without loss.
05:25And they love him.
05:27Absolutely adoring.
05:31155 for none.
05:34155 for none.
05:40Well, it's got to that stage where,
05:43and it looked to me as if it hit the back,
05:46but I watched Lloyd Barker very carefully
05:48when everybody else was watching Chandepore.
05:57Beautifully timed.
05:58He has such a lovely sense of timing,
06:01Stuart Williams.
06:02And who knows?
06:03Chandepore.
06:06And even now,
06:07within touching distance of victory,
06:09he's annoyed with himself that he'd hit it for six.
06:13So Stuart Williams now,
06:14with the opportunity of finishing this match off with a boundary.
06:18And if it isn't a boundary,
06:19they'll be looking for a third.
06:21But only getting two.
06:25So the score's a level.
06:29Stuart Williams passes the 76 he scored in St. Vincent on Wednesday.
06:35And now he too has his highest score in one-day internationals.
06:39Joining his partnership, Narayan Chandapal,
06:42who's just completed his first one-day international 100.
06:47Stuart Williams was a talented young best man who many people thought would become a reliable player for his team.
06:54But instead of changing his style, he kept playing in an attacking way,
06:59often stepping back and hitting the ball hard through the cover area.
07:02Over the time, this became a predictable pattern in his game.
07:06His best moment was when he scored his only test century against India.
07:10But in total, he scored over 50 runs only four times in 52 innings.
07:15He got a surprise chance to play again when India visited the West Indies in 2001 and 2002.
07:20However, his performance did not improve.
07:23He scored just 91 runs in five innings, mostly by hitting boundaries.
07:27Many cricket fans and experts believe that he had the potential to become a consistent top-order best man.
07:33However, his international career never fully lived up to the expectation due to inconsistency in performance.
07:39In test cricket, Stuart Williams played 31 matches,
07:42scoring 1,183 runs at an average of 24.14.
07:47He registered only one century, a 528-run knock against India,
07:52and three half-centuries across 52 innings.
07:55Despite having the skills, he struggled to convert good starts into big scores.
07:59His attacking nature sometimes worked against him in the longer format,
08:03where patience and consistency were needed.
08:05In Wanda International, he had a better record.
08:07He played 57 matches and scored 1,586 runs with a solid average of 32.36.
08:15Williams managed to hit one century and 12 fifties in ODIs.
08:18His highest score was an unbeaten 105, also against India.
08:22He often gave his team quick starts with aggressive batting and was specially strong through dark hours.
08:28His ODI performances were marked by the flint boundaries and fast-paced innings.
08:32At the domestic level, Williams had a far more successful career.
08:36In first-class cricket, he played 151 matches,
08:39scoring a remarkable 9,517 runs at an average of 40.67.
08:45He hit 26 centuries and 36 half-centuries, with a higher score of 252 knockout.
08:51These numbers showcase that he was a reliable performer in the domestic arena.
08:55In Leicester cricket, he played 132 matches, scoring 3,639 runs at an average of 31.10,
09:03with two centuries and 27 fifties.
09:06These figures further highlighted his consistent performances at the regional level.
09:11Williams also briefly appeared in T20 cricket, playing just three matches and scoring 57 runs,
09:17with a top score of 42.
09:19However, T20 was not a major part of his career as the format emerged after his prime years.
09:24Despite not fully realizing his international potential,
09:27Stuart Williams remained an important figure in West Indies cricket history.
09:31He was also known as a sharp fielder, especially in the gully region.
09:35After his playing career, he became involved in team selection
09:38and was appointed to the Nationals National Panel in 2008.
09:42His journey reflects the story of a gifted character who shone brightly at the domestic level,
09:47but he could not consistently deliver on the international stage.
