00:00I'm here at the Discovery Museum where they've just opened a new free play space called Tiny Tyneside.
00:07It's intended to be a safe space for young children to play, learn and explore the themes of the museum,
00:12including transport, inventions and bridges, but all adapted for little visitors to enjoy.
00:17I popped in to see this amazing new space and to find out more.
00:21So, Tiny Tyneside is Discovery Museum's new Under Fives Gallery.
00:26It's a long time coming, but it's a space which hopefully is the gateway to Under Fives visiting the rest of Discovery Museum.
00:37Every activity that's in there ties in with other parts of Discovery Museum,
00:42but we've got a representation of the Mauritania, we've got the Tobinia, we've got the Tyneside Bridge.
00:48We've got representations to do with Joseph Swan's light bulb.
00:52We've got the type of jobs people have done in the past over at Discovery Museum.
00:56Everything that children would want to do and play, building blocks, steps, cars to ride on.
01:03There is all manner of different activities that an Under Five would want to do in the space.
01:10The space, it's been a long time coming. We've had funding from a number of sources.
01:15We've got support from Lumo. We've had funding directly from Sir James Knott Trust initially.
01:20And then we also got funding from the Catherine Cookson Charitable Foundation.
01:24We're really excited because that allowed us to be able to bring in a designer.
01:29And we gave them a brief about what we wanted.
01:32They gave us this amazing concept about how it will tie back to Discovery Museum.
01:38And over the past four or five months, designs have been flying back and it's been built.
01:45And now it's ready for the public to enjoy.
01:49Discovery Museum is a brilliant destination for Under Fives for several reasons.
01:54It's designed to be engaging, hands on and fun, while also giving little ones the chance to explore, learn and play in a safe environment.
02:02With their tiny Sparks sessions and now their tiny Tyneside play space, you can see the museum's commitment to create an engaging and accessible experiences for visitors of all ages.
02:15I think it's important to have an Under Five space in a museum like Discovery Museum.
02:19We want our visitors to come and visit from all ages.
02:22And we see having an Under Five space as the gateway to visit Discovery Museum.
02:27So they will come, use the Under Five space and hopefully see other things that they might be interested in and visiting around the museum.
02:35And as they keep repeating their visits over and over, they'll maybe want to explore further into the museum itself.
02:41And then hopefully they stay as visitors with their parents for a long period of time.
02:47And we have more and more visitors come over and over again.
02:51So start them young, hopefully they'll keep coming as they develop.
02:57you not come over again.
