Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation says it's been receiving many questions from Chinese spouses, after the government announced that thousands of them will need to prove they’ve given up their household registration in China to maintain their legal status in Taiwan.

00:08That's after the government announced it will require thousands of Chinese spouses in Taiwan to prove they've given up their household registration in China.
00:30The foundation says it's assigned additional people to staff their service counter and added new telephone hotlines.
00:40Since 2004, Taiwan has required Chinese citizens applying for Taiwanese ID cards to first give up their household registration in China.
00:50But Taiwan's immigration agency says it has found no records for over 10,000 Chinese spouses.
00:56It is giving them a three-month deadline to provide such proof.
01:00Officials say they'll give special consideration to people who can't return to China for political or health reasons and those who haven't been to China in the past 10 years.
