Police Suspect No 1 S04E05
Transcript
00:00You're in the hall seat now for some real serious offenses.
00:03I'm not interested in it.
00:04Are you being accused of an armed robbery?
00:07When a criminal strikes...
00:08Morning now. I'm pretty killed now.
00:10Listen to me.
00:11Do anything I perceive to be a threat to life, you'll be shocked. Do you understand?
00:15Terrified victims deserve justice.
00:18To have something like this held to your throat, absolutely petrifying.
00:22These innocent people going about their day-to-day lives, they didn't deserve this in the slightest.
00:27First, detectives must identify a suspect.
00:32You've been in here, milk, in the bill.
00:34This lad, when it's in.
00:36Suspect's quite prolific. I'm willing to get this guy in custody.
00:40Police, drop to your knees. Do not move.
00:43Right, you're in the rest.
00:44Get my mother from me now, will it?
00:46Next...
00:47Police!
00:48They must hunt for concrete evidence.
00:50Ooh, it's like George in the jungle, isn't it?
00:52That's him, isn't it?
00:53Ah, perfect!
00:54Then question the suspect face-to-face.
00:57This is your opportunity. If you're going to tell us something, then tell us it now.
01:01Did you put the right to his throat?
01:02Absolutely not.
01:03What are we doing?
01:04Oh, now, dear.
01:04You can watch this.
01:05Get out of my way.
01:06Will the evidence stand or fall?
01:09That is that. That is that.
01:11Will the suspect confess or deny everything?
01:15What are you doing? What are you doing?
01:17Will the police uncover the truth in time?
01:2024 hours is a very limited period of time, so I'll carry out a full investigation.
01:24Because time is ticking and we've got eight hours left.
01:27The best way to safeguard the public is to have the suspect in custody and remand them to prison.
01:31Boom! All the charges?
01:33Yes!
01:33Police in Humberside serve almost a million people in their community.
01:45Please don't have to retain you, sir!
01:46Right, it's more retirement than the rest.
01:48Across the region, as in the rest of the UK, knife crime and offences involving weapons are on the rise.
01:55It appears to be struck with a crowbar.
01:56Oh, my God.
01:57Knife crime and the offences with weapons ruins lives. It ruins families.
02:02We have a real focus around pursuing offenders in knife crime incidents with absolutely everything we've got.
02:07Tonight, we go inside the tactics used by CID.
02:11But they're absolutely petrified.
02:13Yeah.
02:14In their fight against violent crime.
02:16When suspects commit attacks, our priority is to identify and happen to them as soon as possible.
02:22This lad, and it's him.
02:24Somebody who's used a knife once often doesn't think twice about doing it again.
02:31It's Sunday evening, and police are alerted to an armed robbery in progress.
02:38Can I please look at the emergency?
02:40There's someone robbing the co-op around the crossroads with an axe.
02:44Gone in with his hood up and went behind with the axe.
02:49He grabbed the axe to us.
02:50We'd like me, Cleaver.
02:51He's just run off.
02:56He's got like a light blue jacket on with his hood up.
03:01All right, so we've got some officers there.
03:03We're going to get some of the co-op.
03:05And then we're going to do an area of the smear.
03:07With the suspect on the run.
03:13All right, cheers, thanks.
03:15We've got some footage.
03:16You want to see that?
03:18Yeah, of course.
03:19The case is escalated to CID officers Detective Constable Andy Taylor and Detective Sergeant Ryan Johnson.
03:28This is our suspect.
03:29Blue top.
03:30Gloves on.
03:31Their priority is to identify the attacker.
03:36So here he comes in.
03:38Yeah.
03:39We can get quite a good shot of the centre of his face there.
03:43See him walking.
03:44Yeah.
03:45Straight away.
03:46Straight behind the counter?
03:47Yeah, straight behind the counter.
03:48He makes threats.
03:51Speaking to the staff, he's actually basically saying, I'll chop your hands off if you don't open the till.
03:55Right.
03:56So you can see how scared he is.
03:59Bet they're absolutely petrified.
04:02Yeah.
04:04He's loading his bag up with the cash.
04:07He tells them to open the other till as well.
04:10Yeah.
04:11Blimey.
04:12Oh, wow.
04:12Make clear above, Ed.
04:13Yep.
04:13Yep.
04:18Yeah, this bit here is where the staff member actually disarms him.
04:23Yeah, and he chases him out with his own meat cleaver.
04:26Yep.
04:27And he's gone.
04:28He's gone.
04:29Nothing's been taken.
04:30And the shopkeeper still keeps hold of the meat cleaver, yeah?
04:32Yeah.
04:32Okay.
04:32Yeah.
04:33Wow.
04:35Do we know anything else whatsoever about the suspect at the moment?
04:38At the moment, unknown.
04:40Okay.
04:41He appears to be on foot.
04:43Yeah.
04:43Our response cops are out on the ground at the moment.
04:45They're doing their researches.
04:46They've all been passed an image from the CCTV of the clothing.
04:52Again, quite distinctive.
04:54We'll get intel to do some digging around and see who's local in the area, who's been out
04:58and about.
05:00And if there's any intel to suggest anyone that wears a bright blue rain style jacket.
05:04Okay.
05:06Let's start on a wider CCTV trail now.
05:08We need to see where he's come from and try and backtrack his movements as far as possible
05:13to see if we can link him to an address.
05:15Yes, how is it?
05:17When you first lay to a crime, we have what we call a golden hour.
05:20So it's around gathering as much evidence as we possibly can in that first 24 hours.
05:26I see lots of examples of suspects attempting to wash clothing or burn clothing or discard
05:31digital devices to try and hide their tracks.
05:34So we've got to get our hands on them as quickly as we possibly can to protect the public.
05:41The morning after the convenience store attack, there's been a breakthrough.
05:46Cheers.
05:47Bye-bye.
05:47Our intel unit have done some digging around that pulled the name Joe Page.
05:56He lives close to the area, literally a stone's throw from the offence location.
06:01From CCTV, we've seen that the suspect that leaves the shop, they run off in the same direction
06:06of where Joe Page lives.
06:08There's been some previous jobs in that area as well where he's been named.
06:13Joe Page is known to the police and has recently been released from prison on licence.
06:19Most recent conviction was in 2018.
06:22He was sentenced to 10 years for an aggravated burglary.
06:26He only served part of that sentence, so he's cut me out on licence.
06:29If he breaches the terms of his licence, Page faces being sent straight back to prison.
06:38Officers are dispatched to his address to arrest him.
06:43They find him hiding in an unusual place.
06:48Where the f*** are you, you little muppet?
06:50What do you see?
06:51The attic.
06:52Get down.
06:54He's going to lock you up in a second, mate.
06:56Let's get you down.
06:57Yeah, I'm going to have a fag in that fag.
06:58Yeah, we'll get you down and have a fag, yeah.
06:59What?
07:01Get off me, get off me.
07:02I'm coming down.
07:03I'm going to have a bit of this aside for the leverings.
07:05Give me a rest, so you're not going to get your fag out of your mouth.
07:08Right.
07:08Right, you're going to arrest your robberies.
07:10You'll have to say the thing, but it may only be the fag to do not mention one question,
07:12so you'll let it out in court.
07:13Anything you do, save me for giving an evidence.
07:15It's necessary so we can conduct our search and interview about it.
07:20Ah, game over for me now, innit?
07:23Babe!
07:24Babe, get me, come down!
07:26Hey!
07:26Get me a fag and get me some f***ing clothes,
07:28because I'm going to jail, man.
07:30Calm down, buddy, all right?
07:31I'm going to jail!
07:33Hi, mate.
07:34Hi, mate, police.
07:35Police have the power to search any address where a suspect is arrested
07:39to look for further evidence.
07:41Right, look at them.
07:44Suspects think that they can make evidence disappear.
07:46Unfortunately for them, every contact leaves a trace.
07:49We'll find the evidence and we can start building a real strong evidential case.
07:54With suspected knife point robber, Joe Page, now in custody...
07:59Officers searching his house have found clues he has tried to destroy damning evidence
08:10in the hours after the attack.
08:12That burnt blue top has been located in the rear garden.
08:18Could these be the remains of the jacket the attacker was wearing the previous evening?
08:22There's your white card, there's your zip.
08:25If that was a betting man, I reckon it's going to be one of these.
08:29That is that.
08:31Inner lining, black and white lines.
08:34Cracking spot.
08:36So we can show that the inner lining is the same as that of the burnt clothing.
08:40Detectives believe the burnt jacket found in Joe Page's garden is the one worn by the attacker.
08:51But how will Page react when confronted with the damning evidence against him?
08:56He knows that if he's convicted for this, he's going to be seeing some significant jail time.
09:03So I imagine that when it comes to interviews, it's going to be quite difficult.
09:06It's going to be quite difficult.
09:36Listen, what the fuck am I doing here, mate?
09:39Come on, are you serious?
09:41It's not fucking me, that.
09:42No comment.
09:43That's not you?
09:43No.
09:44OK.
09:46With Page denying it's him, the detectives move on to the similarities between the jacket
09:51worn by the robber and the burned remains found in Page's garden.
09:56Have you ever seen this jacket before?
09:58No comment.
09:59So, we believe that we've located this jacket.
10:02What I'm interested in is these scorch marks and blue material.
10:09That's the white zip.
10:11We suspect that there's a zip off that jacket.
10:15OK.
10:17So, we're mentioned.
10:19Stripe pattern on the inside.
10:23It's simple as what's inside that one, mate.
10:27That's the jacket, wasn't it?
10:28OK.
10:30Can we burn that to try and get rid of the evidence?
10:31No comment.
10:32With Joe Page offering no explanation on this physical evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service
10:41authorised charges.
10:42Physical and forensic evidence has long been the cornerstone of any investigation, especially
11:05in violent crime involving knives.
11:07There's blood in both shoes.
11:09There's no disproving that.
11:10It's evidence.
11:12But in the digital age, video evidence is revolutionising the way detectives work.
11:19Ah, there we go.
11:20CCTV is invaluable.
11:21You might find an offence or a crime is captured on CCTV if we're really, really fortunate.
11:27Sometimes you'll capture a suspect fleeing the scene or you might get clothing or vehicles
11:32or associates.
11:33That's in, innit?
11:34It gives you that glimpse as to what's happened in the immediate aftermath, which you'll only
11:37really get if you're actually at the scene yourself.
11:42In the early hours of the morning, police are called after an intruder armed with a knife
11:51broke into a victim's home.
11:52It's a knife behind my roommate's back.
12:06He's threatening us not to scream.
12:09Is that how long was the knife?
12:11Uh, about 40 centimetres.
12:15He took the phone from my roommate, so he said, I can't give him a gun, don't take the
12:21phone.
12:22Have you ever seen this male before?
12:24No.
12:25He was masked and he's wearing gloves.
12:28They're really scary, you know.
12:31And we're afraid the guy will come again, so we call you now.
12:37With a knife-wielding attacker at large, detectives need to move first.
12:42DC Heather Butler has received video footage from a camera pointing at the back of the attacked
12:47address.
12:48This is at about half past one in the morning.
12:53You can actually see through the window that there is someone cooking in the kitchen.
12:57They've got their back door open.
13:02And here he is.
13:04He's looking straight at this address here.
13:07Here he comes round.
13:08If you look here, they're completely unaware of the hand turned around or anything.
13:16He goes into the house.
13:19He takes the phone and comes out.
13:22He's got the knife.
13:24You can see the victim and the witness who are coming out and pleading with him and talking
13:28with him.
13:29The phone's lit up.
13:30He's trying to walk away with it.
13:32And the victim is still pleading, trying to get his phone back.
13:38Really, really scary.
13:44DC Butler must now track the suspect's movements after the burglary.
13:51Here he is coming down.
13:52Now he's just come out the alleyway.
13:54Just looking really casual.
13:57Seems to be looking towards the house.
13:59I think he does want to commit another crime.
14:02Then he just carries on walking off.
14:05So we've got him in the local area.
14:07We don't actually know who this guy is.
14:10We haven't got a facial shot good enough to identify him.
14:12So we're going to have to look for some better footage where we can get a close-up of his face.
14:18Shops are usually good in our local area.
14:20And they usually have quite good CCTV.
14:22So we could maybe get something of him walking past.
14:24Police are able to gather video evidence from a range of sources.
14:30CCTV plays a real crucial role in investigations.
14:34It can often be the missing piece of the jigsaw in tracking a suspect.
14:39Wondering if it's possible to have a look at your CCTV.
14:42If we've got a real clear facial image of that offender committing an offence,
14:47that can secure us a successful prosecution.
14:53DC Butler is hoping local businesses near the scene of the attack
14:57will be able to help her identify the suspect.
15:00But look up there.
15:04We know the guy now.
15:05He's come down here.
15:06So hopefully these cameras will pick up his face.
15:10Hi.
15:11It's just Heather from the place.
15:13Having successfully tracked the suspect walking towards the shop,
15:17DC Butler needs this CCTV to be at the right angle to capture the suspect's face.
15:23Have a look from about ten past far, and then we'll go from there.
15:31No, that's not him.
15:36This lad.
15:40And it's him.
15:43Oh, brilliant.
15:47Oh, nice, yeah.
15:49CCTV has revealed the suspect's face.
15:53His image and description are circulated to units in the area.
15:58I'd be requesting our patrols to up their presence in that local area.
16:03If he was to come back or found sort of that area as an easy target,
16:07we're going to have officers there.
16:15But as night falls, events take an extraordinary turn.
16:18Less than 24 hours after the first burglary, the same house is targeted again.
16:26But this time, it's two men who have broken in.
16:29The hunt is on for two suspects potentially armed with weapons.
16:37The hunt is on for two suspects potentially armed with weapons.
16:50Less than 500 metres from the attack to dress, police have stopped a man whose clothes and appearance
17:00match the description given by the victims.
17:03At the moment, you're being swapped for a sexual one-piece search.
17:07We're going to be searching you for a knife, because there was a knife used in the incident.
17:11Amongst the items reported stolen was a Canada Goose jacket,
17:17similar to the one the suspect is currently wearing.
17:20Body-worn video is really, really valuable for us.
17:23When we arrest a suspect, we'll demonstrate their demeanour, how aggressive or violent they are.
17:27Right, I'm going to be searching you slowly, OK?
17:29Don't make any sudden movements.
17:31Also, what clothing they're wearing, whether they've changed their appearance
17:33from an earlier CCTV image or a witness's account.
17:36It's going to be quite significant down the line when we get to an investigation.
17:39Keep that hand out of your pockets, yeah?
17:41No weapons are found on the suspect.
17:45At the moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
17:50He's booked into Clough Road custody suite.
18:04But suspect number one was not acting alone.
18:07The victims gave a description of a second suspect,
18:10and a man matching that description was also detained,
18:14in close proximity to the attacked address.
18:16Now the suspects have been arrested, the custody clock countdown begins.
18:35The detectives have just 24 hours to obtain enough evidence to charge the suspects,
18:40or they'll be forced to release them.
18:42I've come in this morning to find out that the same address has been burgled again last night.
18:53This time it was with two people.
18:56The two suspects are Justine Monyaniza and Timothy Myers.
19:02There's been a lot more violence.
19:04More people within the house, they've been threatened.
19:07This time it was a meat cleaver.
19:10They've grabbed hold of the victim.
19:12They've put their hand over their mouth and held the meat cleaver to his throat.
19:17They've made stabbing actions towards one of the victims,
19:21and they've also tried to prevent him from escaping.
19:24So it's got a lot more violent, a lot more serious,
19:28and it'll be a lot more traumatic to the two victims.
19:34As well as a Canada Goose jacket,
19:36police have seized a beige hoodie Justine Monyaniza was wearing at the time of his arrest.
19:43DC Heather Butler compares this hoodie
19:45with the hoodie worn by the suspect seen in the CCTV of the first burglary.
19:50His camera angle is the back of the attack to dresses,
19:54and there's our guy.
19:56If she can show the hoodies are the same,
19:59it will put Monyaniza in the frame for both attacks.
20:03That's the same hoodie with the same writing, same colour.
20:07So that just confirms that he is our suspect that we wanted for the first burglary.
20:12With strong evidence now linking Monyaniza to both burglaries,
20:16how will he react when confronted in the interview room?
20:20Two innocent victims have been held at knife point
20:33and terrorised in their own home, twice in 24 hours.
20:38At the moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
20:42Police have strong video evidence linking suspect number one,
20:45just in Monyaniza, to both attacks.
20:47His camera angle is the back of the attacked addresses,
20:51and there's our guy.
20:53They bring him in for interview to confront him with the evidence.
20:58He's been arrested in relation to,
20:59so offensive about the great burglary.
21:02The detectives start questioning Monyaniza about the second burglary.
21:06Police have received a call saying that they've had two males
21:10enter the address, one being a black male, one being a white male.
21:15What are you doing, black male?
21:17No, come on.
21:19The victim does see that, black male.
21:22He grabs him, places him against the wall,
21:24and puts a knife to his throat.
21:27Did you do that?
21:28Mm-hm.
21:29He says this male, continually hits him on the head
21:32with the handle of the knife,
21:34then walks him round the house threatening with the knife.
21:36Did you do that?
21:39No, come on.
21:41He says the male,
21:43look, it's a Canada Goose jacket,
21:45puts the coat on.
21:48We know where that Canada Goose jacket is, don't we?
21:51Mm-hm.
21:52Because she was arrested wearing it.
21:53Mm-hm.
21:55Monyaniza is refusing to cooperate,
21:57but officers on the ground have sourced new incriminating CCTV
22:01from the second burglary.
22:03Will this lead to him explaining himself?
22:06You're seen at 23.03 with Myers in the area.
22:1423.15 shows you climbing into an insecure window.
22:20So you go in first, yeah?
22:22Mm-hm.
22:24Are you the lead in this mastermind of you and Timothy?
22:28Mm-hm.
22:30Because you open the door for time, if you don't you?
22:31Mm-hm.
22:33You let him in.
22:34Mm-hm.
22:34You went back to that address
22:38because you did it the night before, didn't you?
22:41Oh, come on.
22:44In the space of 24 hours,
22:46you've done it once,
22:48with very little trouble,
22:50and then you've done it again.
22:52And the second time round,
22:54is when you're gone with Tim Myers,
22:56stolen a Canada Goose jacket,
22:58threatened him, knife at the throats.
23:00In fact, he was a bit more violent this time, aren't you?
23:02But you've gone there thinking,
23:04that's an easy touch, I'll do it again.
23:07Mm-hm.
23:10When you're near Zell, there's no comedy to everything.
23:13We've got him wearing the stolen jacket.
23:17Also, the same address was done less than 24 hours before.
23:21A male was fitting his description.
23:23If he's there with a knife and he's ordering them around
23:26and getting them to sit there and move there
23:28and move from one room to the next,
23:30you've got a false imprisonment.
23:31I can see big prison sentences, to be honest.
23:37Having built a strong case against Monyaneza,
23:40detectives turn their attention to his alleged accomplice
23:43for the second burglary, Timothy Myers.
23:45They're examining a witness video.
23:54Lots of witnesses now capture the offence
23:56or incident going on with a mobile phone.
24:02That can be really powerful.
24:04Sometimes identifying things that we didn't know
24:06that help us open up other key lines of inquiry.
24:10This is Myers.
24:11The residents here are being really brave.
24:13They're trying to get him out of the house
24:14without any injury.
24:16I'm going!
24:18I'm going!
24:19I'm back home!
24:20So it's continued now.
24:22He's still trying to have an argument with them.
24:24He's not just not walking away, is he?
24:26No.
24:27I'm back home!
24:28I'm going!
24:29You can see he's turning back.
24:30He's trying to be a bit aggressive.
24:32Yeah, he is.
24:33But, you know, victims...
24:34He's a bit antagonistic, isn't he?
24:35And he goes back in, look.
24:36Yes, yeah.
24:37You do not scare me!
24:40Look!
24:40Look!
24:43He just shows him
24:44quite unsteady on his feet
24:46and a bit aggressive with him.
24:49We don't see any weapons,
24:50but he's clearly a bit antagonistic.
24:55Having reviewed the footage,
24:57detectives challenged Myers
24:58in the interview room.
25:00Right, prior to this interview,
25:02can you just confirm
25:02that you were shown two clips
25:05on the laptop?
25:08I was, yes.
25:09OK.
25:09And would you like to comment
25:10on those clips?
25:14I shouldn't have been there.
25:16I am sorry.
25:20I'm very sorry
25:20that the whole thing happened.
25:22You do not scare me!
25:24You fucking...
25:25Relax!
25:25Relax!
25:26There was clearly some verbos
25:29between the people in there,
25:31which is, I mean,
25:32you're a trespasser in that house.
25:33Well, I was in the right,
25:34so I just vaguely remember
25:35I had a knife
25:36down on the back
25:37and I was like a 10 round.
25:39Go!
25:40Go!
25:41Go, go, go, go!
25:43Hey!
25:43I'm going!
25:44I'm going!
25:46It's just a natural reaction
25:47for them, isn't it?
25:48They just want you out,
25:48don't they?
25:49They want you out.
25:49I'm so sorry.
25:54I'm going to be here.
25:57With compelling CCTV
25:59potentially showing
26:01Monyan Ezer
26:01carrying out
26:02the first burglary
26:03and strong video evidence
26:06of both suspects
26:07carrying out
26:08the second attack,
26:13the Crown Prosecution Service
26:15authorised charges.
26:19Video evidence
26:36often proves decisive
26:37in bringing charges
26:39against armed intruders.
26:41So I'm just going to show you
26:42some CCTV.
26:44When you've got a suspect
26:45who thinks you've got no evidence,
26:47that they've got one up on you,
26:48there is nothing more compelling
26:49than having some CCTV evidence
26:51up your sleeve.
26:53Oh, it's you
26:54that you was there.
26:55It was bad, right?
26:57Really, it gives you
26:58some satisfaction
26:59as an investigator
27:00to actually show them that
27:02and see their change
27:03in their face.
27:04Were you involved in it?
27:08Yes.
27:09You were?
27:09Yes.
27:12It's a bank holiday weekend
27:14and reports have come in
27:15to police of a huge brawl
27:17involving weapons,
27:18rampaging through the streets.
27:21I'm just a police
27:22what's your emergency?
27:24Hiya.
27:24We're closing up
27:25but we've got a really bad fire
27:27outside with customers.
27:30How many people are involved?
27:31Like, there's about 20
27:33out here at the moment.
27:35We've watched a group
27:36get some weapons
27:37and now they're heading
27:38towards the river head.
27:39I'm just a police
27:52what's your emergency?
27:53Hiya, we've just had
27:55six lights run around
27:56to the front of
27:58Fusion,
27:58all victorious three
28:00with weapons,
28:01crowbars,
28:02space,
28:02or shot.
28:03One of them
28:06hit this lad
28:06with a crowbar.
28:09We shot at ours
28:09immediately.
28:11Five of us
28:12run up behind
28:12with weapons.
28:15Did the person
28:15that was hit
28:16with the crowbar
28:16look like they need
28:17an ambulance?
28:18One of them
28:19definitely did, yeah.
28:20We've got three patrols
28:26on route at the moment.
28:28With both callers
28:29reporting weapons
28:30being used,
28:31officers race
28:31to the town centre.
28:37They immediately
28:38pursue a group of men
28:39seen running away.
28:42You're under arrest
28:43on the GPH.
28:44There's been an incident
28:45and you've been seen
28:46running as police
28:46have turned up.
28:48Three suspects
28:49are caught
28:50and arrested.
28:52Sit there.
28:54Come on, Joe.
28:55Step in and monitor
28:55I'd put it in
28:56and take a seat
28:56just there for us, please.
28:58But a number of others,
29:00including the man
29:00with the crowbar,
29:01have made their escape.
29:04We've got a potential
29:05scene on New Street
29:06as they pool of blood
29:08near the ambulance.
29:10Three victims
29:11of the attack
29:12are being treated
29:12for their injuries.
29:14What have you been hit with?
29:16We went through
29:17with the crowbar
29:18and walked to it.
29:19Took a big gash
29:20on me hand.
29:21A hole in his head.
29:23Like a crowbar hole.
29:26He's got a head injury.
29:27The other one
29:27is stable
29:28but they're all
29:29cooking in barra.
29:30He's got an on and down.
29:31We need to get
29:32to the bullsharp fish.
29:33Right.
29:34Whilst the victims
29:35are rushed to hospital
29:36with one in critical condition
29:39from a head wound,
29:40the three arrested men
29:41are brought into custody.
29:44Hello again, Sarge.
29:45Hello.
29:45What was your name?
29:46The other two suspects
29:50are named
29:50Madeleine Illier
29:51and Marion Vassilake.
29:57Before summoning
29:58the suspects
29:59for interview,
30:00Detective Superintendent
30:01Nicky Burnett
30:02and Detective Inspector
30:04Scott Miller
30:05begin by confirming
30:06the three men
30:07in custody
30:07were involved
30:09in the attack.
30:09They compare clothing
30:13worn by the arrested
30:14suspects
30:15to clothing seen
30:16in the CCTV footage.
30:19Dark shoulder jacket
30:21is going to be
30:22Madeleine Illy.
30:25So I've got him
30:26swinging a spade.
30:28I believe
30:29this chap here
30:30is Marion Vassilakey.
30:33That's him
30:33upon arrest.
30:34Yeah.
30:35You see him
30:35in his light-coloured
30:36or grey-coloured
30:37hooded top.
30:38Is that
30:39Merelle cough?
30:40Burgundy jacket.
30:42Yes,
30:42with the moustache.
30:43Yeah.
30:43He can be clearly seen
30:44to be throwing punches
30:45in the direction
30:45of people.
30:49With strong evidence,
30:51all three men
30:52are involved
30:52in the incident.
30:54They will each
30:55be interviewed
30:55to get their
30:56account of the attack.
30:58When we're interviewing
30:58a suspect,
30:59we'll always
31:00withhold some information.
31:01So for example,
31:02if we've got CCTV
31:03that quite clearly
31:03shows them at the scene,
31:05they say they're
31:0520 or 30 miles away,
31:06then already
31:07we've caught them
31:07in a lie,
31:08and then we can
31:08start to build on that
31:09to test the truth
31:10on us with an account.
31:13Can you give me
31:14your full name, please?
31:16Ilie Madeline Valentin.
31:18Okay, so
31:19you've been arrested
31:19for an assault.
31:21Tell me what happened.
31:23No comment.
31:24Okay.
31:25What was your involvement
31:26in this incident?
31:28No comment.
31:28I'm going to show you
31:31some CCTV.
31:32Does that look familiar?
31:38No comment.
31:40Did you identify anyone
31:42in that CCTV?
31:43No comment.
31:45Following a no-comment
31:47interview for Madeleine Ilie,
31:50detectives next bring in
31:51Marion Vassilake
31:52for questioning.
31:53We're going to show you
31:54this.
31:56I want you to watch it.
31:57So the other ones
32:11used the metal bar.
32:12Do you know what you're doing?
32:22Mirel Kov is the final
32:24suspect to be interviewed.
32:26In here.
32:28Will he admit
32:29his involvement
32:30in the attack?
32:31Okay, so
32:32we are now recording.
32:33You're arrested
32:34for an assault.
32:36Tell me about it.
32:37No one.
32:38No one.
32:39No one.
32:40No one.
32:41No one.
32:42No one.
32:43No one.
32:44No one.
32:45No one.
32:46No one.
32:47No one.
32:48No one.
32:49No one.
32:50Maybe in that first
32:52bar to be arrested,
32:53has he seen any other
32:55conflict?
32:56No, absolutely no.
32:58After denying he was
32:59involved, Mirel Kov
33:01is then challenged
33:02with the CCTV evidence.
33:06I'm just going to show you
33:07a video.
33:19Okay.
33:20Now that's paused.
33:21You can see a bit clearer.
33:22Can you see anyone
33:23in that CCTV footage
33:24that you identified?
33:29Okay.
33:30Which one is you?
33:31This one here.
33:32This one here.
33:33Okay.
33:34I can't hide.
33:35No, my God.
33:36No, no, I can't even see anyone.
33:41I can't hide.
33:42There's a lot of people here.
33:43Because if you're here,
33:44you can't do that.
33:45You can't do that.
33:46That's it.
33:47So, as I got into the Sunlander, it seemed like I walked into the world's mouth.
34:01I got into the Sunlander, but I didn't know that the world is like the kids.
34:09When I got into the Sunlander, they started to come to the Sunlander.
34:15Mirel Korf has admitted his involvement, but will he go further?
34:22Name? Is that this person?
34:26Name. Stay here.
34:31Do you know his surname?
34:35It's a huge breakthrough.
34:37Police now have the names of some of the outstanding suspects,
34:41including a nickname, Adi, for the man with the crowbar.
34:46Now we'll tell the truth.
34:48Do you have any information, right?
34:49Yes, we have to take care of them.
34:51We have to take care of them from the beginning.
34:54Armed with this new information, detectives begin to investigate the identities of the outstanding suspects.
35:01But where are they?
35:03We've just had six lads run round with weapons. One of them hit this lad with a crowbar.
35:17A violent street brawl has left one man in critical condition with serious head wounds.
35:22Three attackers were arrested at the scene, but a number of suspects, including the man with the crowbar, made their escape.
35:32Police are now working to identify the remaining suspects.
35:36Investigations into addresses linked to the three men in custody, along with the names they provided in interview, have given detectives a new lead.
35:54So we strongly suspect now that a large proportion of our suspects reside at the same property.
35:59You know, a phone call was made by Miro Corfe to an associate at that property.
36:04So we're carrying out further arrest attempts at that location.
36:15Please stop, should we change that?
36:19Inside the property...
36:20Police find two men who were both arrested and brought back to Birchin Way police station.
36:34What's your friend, please?
36:36Vasile Corfe.
36:38Hello, are you all right?
36:41What's your name?
36:43Michalaka Danut and Vasile Corfe.
36:45In custody, Michalaka Danut and Vasile Corfe are kept separate.
36:51Separating multiple suspects before an interview is crucial.
36:54We don't want people being able to corroborate their own accounts, come up with the same stories.
37:00We want to hear their version of events, not something that's scripted between a number of them.
37:05Vasile Corfe is the first in for interview.
37:07Will he admit his part in the attack, or help detectives identify the man with the crowbar?
37:15He was arrested on suspicion of GBH and also on suspicion of violent disorder.
37:21Can you tell me in as much detail as possible your involvement in these allegations?
37:25Have you assaulted anyone?
37:32No problem.
37:34Did you use a weapon to hurt anybody?
37:36No problem.
37:38Did you see anybody hit, able to the weapon?
37:41No problem.
37:43Vasile Corfe is refusing to give an account.
37:47Will Michalaka Danut provide any more information?
37:51You're suspected of being involved in these offenses and you were arrested on suspicion of the grievous body harm?
37:58Yes, it's true.
38:00Yes, it's true.
38:02The victim has been arrested by...
38:06I'm being here.
38:08Yeah, in the back.
38:10I'm seeing Adeline and I'm seeing Adeline.
38:13I'm seeing Adeline with her.
38:15I'm seeing Adeline with her.
38:17And again, Adeline heard that he would be the matter of all.
38:19Danut has given the full first name of the man with the crowbar.
38:24Adeline.
38:26I don't know, sir.
38:28No.
38:30No.
38:32Because he booked a flight to leave tonight.
38:37Oh!
38:39It's a bombshell for the detectives.
38:42Their main suspect is about to flee the country.
38:45We need to get this individual before he jumps on a plane.
38:49The clock's ticking now.
38:50If he were to leave the country, it would be very difficult.
38:53You know, to locate him and bring him back again.
38:56Face justice.
38:58Danut has told police an address recently used by Adeline.
39:06Officers enter the property.
39:10Clear.
39:14Clear.
39:15But it's empty.
39:17Are they too late?
39:19Has he fled the UK?
39:25With time running out, detectives at Birchin Way police station urgently investigate any other addresses he may be linked to.
39:35Can I just take your name, please?
39:39Can you spell that for me?
39:41Here's some pictures here of the clothing that was worn.
39:45Officers at the property search for any clothing he was wearing on the night.
39:49I think it was just a crowbar.
39:51Crowbar?
39:53What shoe descriptions did we have?
39:55I think it was just a crowbar.
39:56Crowbar?
39:58What shoe descriptions did we have?
40:00I think it was like, um, cream.
40:02We've come down here, one for an arrest attempt for the outstanding suspect, but also to see if any items related to the offence.
40:06We found what we believe to be the clothing that the suspect was wearing, whilst then he was asleep to be involved in the assault which took place yesterday morning.
40:29Back at Birchin Way police station, there's been a major development.
40:33Is it Adeline?
40:36Have they ever been arrested before?
40:38After new intelligence identified the address of an associate, plain clothes officers have arrested their main suspect.
40:45I'm authorising your detention here at Birchin Way police station to obtain evidence by way of questioning.
40:51So what that means is you need to be interviewed in relation to that allegation to see whether you know anything about that incident, okay?
41:00He's taken for interview.
41:01But what will he say about the assault?
41:07Okay, we are now recording.
41:09Can you give me your full name?
41:11I think it's probably quite a bit.
41:15You've been arrested for an assault that happened yesterday morning in the early hours in Grimsby Tower Centre.
41:21We're just going to show you some video footage now.
41:22Did you see yourself on that CCTV?
41:23Yes.
41:24And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:27Yes.
41:28And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:29Yes.
41:30And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:33Yes.
41:34And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:39Yes.
41:40And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:41Yes.
41:42And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:45Yes.
41:46Yes.
41:47Yes.
41:48Yes.
41:49Yes.
41:50Yes.
41:51I think when suspects are caught out, it's quite often in an interview you'll find, in
42:12violent crime in particular, where they get to a point of desperation ultimately, where
42:16they know that the game is up, if you like, but they're still trying to find a way out
42:20of that.
42:27What changed?
42:28Why did you go from scaring to actually hitting?
42:36So, as I'm looking at the CCTV here, I'm already counting four swings with this metal pole towards
42:45one of the victims.
42:47Yes, anyway, he hit him twice.
42:50I know that I hit him on each line, sir.
42:54I think the other big one kicked him and punched him.
43:00This is the injuries that this judgment has suffered.
43:07This young man's not well enough to give a statement to us just yet.
43:11No, no, no.
43:14No, no, no, no.
43:18So, you said you've gone there to scare him.
43:24But C3 shows that you hit one of them as soon as you've come around the corner.
43:28as soon as you've come around the corner.
43:31So, how are you meant to scare someone
43:32if your actions are straight in, let's go and assault?
43:36No, I don't have any more questions.
43:41Do you want anything?
43:42OK.
43:45It's a result for detectives.
43:48The confession of their suspect number one.
43:50We've managed to identify all of the suspects.
43:54We need to put this case to CPS
43:59and hopefully secure the charges
44:01because it's really important
44:04that we get these people taken off our streets.
44:24Knife crime and the defences with weapons
44:40remains a priority for us.
44:42There are some really dangerous people out there.
44:43But investigators are motivated, they're tenacious.
44:46That's what they get out of bed for.
44:48And that's all about pursuing suspects
44:49and making communities in the public safe.
