Axel Foley, inspecteur de police à Detroit, revient à Beverly Hills pour enquêter sur un trafic de cartes de crédit. Dans le même temps, une série de hold-up sanglants, signés chacun d'une lettre de l'alphabet, met la police sur les dents. Le capitaine Bogomil confie l'enquête aux sergents Taggart et Billy Rosewood. Contre toute attente, le nouveau chef de la police la leur retire quelque temps plus tard. Bogomil, qui a relevé une piste intéressante, est gravement blessé. Axel Foley, désireux d'aider son ami et de redorer son blason auprès de la police de Beverly Hills, reprend l'enquête. Il utilise bien évidemment ses méthodes peu orthodoxes...
