Basé sur l'incroyable histoire vraie de Trudy Ederle, première femme à avoir réussi à traverser la Manche à la nage, le film met en scène Daisy Ridley dans le rôle de cette nageuse hors du commun, née en 1905 à New York de parents immigrés. Grâce au soutien inconditionnel de sa sœur aînée et de ses entraîneurs, elle parvint à surmonter tous les obstacles et l'hostilité d'une société patriarcale, rejoignant même les rangs de l'équipe olympique de natation et accomplissant un véritable exploit : une traversée de plus de 33 kilomètres entre la France et l'Angleterre.
