00:30Actually, I have been racing for about I think 7 years now
00:37and nag-start lang ako sa Rallycross and Rally just last year
00:42So my first experience in that discipline was for Rally
00:46So ito naman yung sa open road siya
00:49and I was a navigator and not a driver
00:52and then yung boyfriend ko naman yung driver
00:54So pag navigator ka kasi you have to be reading a road book
00:58So ikaw magsasabi dun sa driver kung kaliwa ka na
01:02Anong klaseng turn siya, sharp ba siya
01:04and ano yung mga pwede nilang i-expect
01:07Meron bang bangin in the next few meters
01:09So yung mga ganon, you're the mind of the driver
01:13And then I also wanted to experience rally racing myself
01:18So I started with Rallycross
01:20So I completed the series for Philippine Rallycross last year
01:24and luckily I was able to get the championship at the end of the season
01:28Yes, sa pagsimula mo Gabby, ano ba yung naramdaman mo yung first experience mo
01:35noong nag-start ka sa sport na to?
01:40Actually yung first experience ko, sobrang kabado ako
01:43kasi ever since I started racing, medyo intimidating for me ang dirt
01:48na iba yung level of respect and paghanga ko sa mga rally racers
01:54kasi very unpredictable yung road conditions
01:59unlike sa circuit na pare-pareho yung condition ng road unless umulan
02:04but for Rallycross specifically
02:07every time may dadaan na driver, mag-iiba yung road condition
02:11So I drive a Vios and some of the racers drive a 4x4
02:17So yung mga pickup, pag dinaanan na nila yung track
02:21medyo mas magiging challenging na siya
02:23for sedans
02:25So kailangan you're quick to adapt to the road conditions
02:29kasi you never know what's up ahead
02:31Okay, Gabby, pwede mo bang ibahagi sa amin yung ano
02:37kung meron ka bang naging inspiration para pasukin itong motorsports
02:43kasi alam naman natin, hindi masyadong nilalaho ka, hindi ito nilalaho ka ng mga kababaihan
02:49So meron ka bang inspiration para pasukin itong motorsports?
02:53Actually the inspiration talaga nang galing sa family ko, particularly my uncle
03:01so yung kapatid ng mommy ko
03:03He's actually sharing it as a picture na to. He's been in the motorsport industry for almost his whole adult life.
03:11So ako nung bata ako, ladi akong mitbit sa racetrack. Nakasakaya ko sa racetrack before, parang bago pa lang ako mag 7 years old.
03:20So talagang na-entice ako kasi yun yung kinamulatan ko growing up.
03:25And then additionally, yung lolo ko naman, car enthusiast siya.
03:29So pagdating ko pa lang sa mundong to, nakikita ko na yung mga kotse na binubuo niya, yung mga luma, yung mga bago.
03:37So talagang nandun na siya sa akin growing up pa lang.
03:40And na-motivate ako na gusto ko rin ang ganun. I wanna be unique. I wanna have a sport na hindi masasabi na karamihan na nagsubukan na nila.
03:50Nice, nice.
03:51Yes, and syempre, this is woman empowerment na naman.
03:55Parang naalala ko tuloy yung mga female drivers na ito sila, Bianca Bustamante.
04:02Oo, iilan lang sila sa ganitong klase ng sport.
04:07Pero Gabby, do you think ba na common na sinasabi ng iba na kapag ang papasukin mo is competitive racing?
04:18Ano yung mga challenges mo dito? Or paano mo na-overcome yung mga challenges?
04:22Yung unang challenge na na-experience ko when I started in motorsport was,
04:29nahihiya ako na puro lalaki yung kasama ko.
04:32Yes, I admit it can get intimidating at the start.
04:36But I feel like sobrang swerte ko kasi I was already in that industry before I even started racing competitively.
04:43So, kilala ko na yung karamihan ng mga tao and they were very much supportive of me when I started racing kasi alam nila na talagang gusto ko siya.
04:53So, sila yung nag-guide sa akin throughout my entire racing journey, sa mga iba-ibang discipline or types of racing na nasalihan ko.
05:02So, na-overcome ko rin siya eventually nung na-build ko na yung confidence na kaya ko rin pala.
05:09So, if kaya nila, kaya ko rin. I just have to start by conquering my initial fears.
05:16Ayun. You've mentioned earlier na nag-start ka as a navigator.
05:21Kailan mo na-realize na, ah, kaya ko pala maging race car driver din?
05:28Kasi navigator, comms lang, di ba?
05:31Ang true comms lang, di ba? Ang pagiging navigator.
05:36Yes, yes. Through comms, ay, yes, through comms ang navigator.
05:40But prior to me, vegan navigator for rally, inag-race na talaga ako prior.
05:45So, I just wanted to explore a different side of racing.
05:49And it's also something that I wanted to do with my boyfriend.
05:53Kasi, ako curious ako na nakakaaliw, ang galing ng tandem ng driver and ng navigator.
05:59Na kailangan nyo so quick to adapt.
06:01Nagbabasa ka ng road book na may iba-iba siyang mga graphs, iba-iba yung itsura ng direction.
06:07So, na-challenge ako, eh, na-curious ako.
06:09And then, after my first time, ah, kaya ko pala.
06:12So, I wanted to continue it.
06:14But, unfortunately, schedules-wise, medyo mahirap timingan yung schedule ng rally.
06:19Kaya, rally cross was a bit more flexible for us.
06:22Ayun.
06:23Saka, bihira din, ah, na real-life couple, teammates sa isang sport.
06:30Kasi, syempre, ibang, ano niyan, ibang approach, di ba?
06:33Different individual, different athletes.
06:35Pero sa kanila, yung chemistry.
06:37Yeah, siguro yun din yung, ano, naging isang dahilan kung bakit naging maganda yung chemistry.
06:41Malaki yung factor.
06:42Malaki yung factor yun sa kanila dahil, ah, couple na sila.
06:45So, alam nila yung, yung, ah.
06:47Yung trabaho ng isa-isa, no, whether a navigator or a driver.
06:51Yung, ah, nagko-complement yung kanilang roles dito sa sport na to.
06:56Pero, Gabby, so far, as a lady rider, ano ba yung pinaka, or your greatest achievement mo?
07:02My greatest achievement as a female racer would be racing internationally for Gymkana.
07:11So, my first experience was in 2019, where I was sent alongside two other male drivers to Indonesia.
07:21So, nag-race kaming tatlo and represented the country.
07:23I was very, I was very, um, scared to enter into it kasi it was my first international race.
07:29But luckily, we were able to bring home the team championship, um, from that race.
07:34Hmm.
07:34Pag nabanggit mo na karamihan dun sa, ah, racers na yun, eh, lalaki.
07:41So, this is, well, this is a male-dominated sport.
07:44Pero hindi ka ba na-intimidate?
07:46Hindi ka ba napanghinaan ng loob?
07:48So, what really, uh, what was your drive to pursue moto-moto sport?
07:55It wasn't really, um, eventually, as, as years went by, I wasn't intimidated anymore.
08:01Kasi those, um, people that I race with, yung mga lalaki, eventually, naging kaibigan ko na rin sila.
08:07Yung iba, para kong kuya, para kong nang mga kapatid.
08:10So, um, it's really a good community of racers na supportahan ng isa't isa.
08:17Never kong naramdaman in the motorsport industry na, minamaliit ako as babae.
08:22Yeah.
08:22And everyone was, um, supportive of me and my journey.
08:26Oo, kasi, partner, ah, usually, um, weeks before ng race, ah, talagang nagwo-warm-up.
08:31Mga kasamang mo sila mag-warm-up din, eh.
08:33So, um, um, with that being said, Gabby, um, in terms of, ano ba, um, sa budget, ah, paano ba magsimula dito?
08:42Kailangan ba may pera ka?
08:43Um, um, um, or kung gaano ba kalaki ang kailangan para pasukin ng ganitong classing industry?
08:50Actually, ngayon, there are a lot of options for grassroots racing.
08:55If gusto nyo lang ma-experience, ninyo kailangan ng fully modified car, you don't even need a race car.
09:00May mga karera, um, particularly called, um, gymkana or autocross na pwede nyo salihan.
09:07And usually, accessible siya kasi you can just use your stock car.
09:12Kahit automatic pa yan, okay lang, as long as, um, umaandar siya.
09:17Kering-keri na yan.
09:18So, you, you can look for, um, races, uh, on Facebook.
09:22And then, usually, ang magandahan, ang kagandahan dyan ay, because we want to encourage more female racers to enter into motorsport, may mga ladies class na free ang mga babae to join.
09:33Ayun.
09:34Wow.
09:34Pero kailangan ba ng, ano, kailangan ba may, uh, skilled, skilled racer ka talaga bago ka sumalang dito?
09:42Or kahit zero knowledge ka, pwede kang pumasok dito?
09:46Actually, kahit zero knowledge ka, ang may upcoming race, actually, is super sprint.
09:53So, it's, um, gym, para siyang autocross, na it's usually done in a parking lot, may mga pylons that you need to, um, follow, may lay out siya.
10:02And marami rin, I think, isa siya sa mga races na maraming babae, if I'm not mistaken, parang lima yata sila doon.
10:09And I know, because I wanted to join that, um, race, kasi hindi ko pa natatry yung super sprint.
10:14So, um, ayun, marami ng female racers to.
10:18And hopefully, sa mga gustong kumarera dyan ng mga babae, um, if you want, if you need a friend, wala kayong mayaya, gusto nyo ng kasamang babae,
10:26pwede nyo akong i-message for questions, because I also want to help the female community, um, to, to be in motorsport.
10:34Ang gado naman na ito.
10:35Mamaya, Miss Gabby, ha, i-message kito.
10:37Well, I'm really into, you know, chant, uh, challenging and unique sport.
10:44And this is definitely isang sport na, alam mo yun, um, I think, kailangan ma-discover, lalo na ng ating mga, ano, kababaihan.
10:52Diba? Pero, um, kamusta ba?
10:54Since nabanggit mo na, and we're talking about women, kamusta ang, um, rally community dito sa Pilipinas, lalo na for the lady drivers?
11:02The rally community now is growing ulit, kasi medyo nag-die down siya for the past few years.
11:11Wala masyadong options for races to join, pero ngayon, um, madami na may Philippine Rally Cross, may Dirt University, may Rally Racers Club.
11:20So, ang dami, ang dami yung pwedeng pagpilian.
11:23So, it's a matter of learning where, uh, finding out kung saan ka pwedeng magsimula schedules-wise.
11:30Kasi alam naman natin lahat tayo busy ngayon, so medyo challenging ang schedule.
11:35Um, pero, growing na siya.
11:37In terms of female naman, we still have a long way to go.
11:40Kasi handful pa lang yung mga babae that are, um, in the rally community.
11:46So, hopefully, uh, as the community grows throughout the years, madadumami rin kaming mga babae in the rally community.
11:55Ayun, maganda yun, partner, no?
11:57Pero, um, gusto ko lang din itanong, ano, um, Gabby, um, since driving, yung ano natin, race car driving, um, rally driving, um, gusto ko lang itanong,
12:08dahil, uh, medyo sikat ngayon sa social media yung, ano, eh, yung pagiging reckless ng mga ibang mga anak dito sa Pilipinas.
12:15So, what's your take about, dun, sa, ano, parang ginagawa nilang racetrack yung, uh, national roads, eh, no?
12:22So, anong masasabi mo dun sa mga, ano, na dapat, uh, pumunta lamang sila sa truck at hindi sa, gamitin yung pagiging reckless nila sa, sa national roads?
12:34Delikado kasi, eh, eh, if nilalabas yung gigil sa kalsada kasi hindi siya controlled environment.
12:39So, kung ano man mangyari sa'yo at sa kotse mo, pwede kang makadami ng ibang tao.
12:45So, if alam mong sa sarili mo, meron kang gigil sa pagmamaneho, may mga outlet na pwedeng, um, labasan ng gigil mo, um, mag-karting ka,
12:54if that's the most accessible, kasi marami ng mga indoor karting ngayon sa mga mall, pwede kang maglabas ng gigil mo dun na sa kalsada mo usually nilalabas.
13:03Or, you can find ways na hindi naman accessible ang racetrack, pero, if alam mong, ay, gusto ko maging race car driver, frustrated race car driver ako,
13:13um, pwede kang mag-explore ng ganong opportunity.
13:15Dahil, delikado kong maa-atrisk ang mga buhay ng mga nasa paligid natin dahil lang sa, um, ganong klaseng high emotion.
13:25Pero, pagdating naman sa competition, Gabby, paano mo ba nilalabas yung gigil mo?
13:31I mean, how do you stay focused and composed during the whole time you're driving?
13:37My technique is when, a few minutes before, um, the race starts, meron akong quiet time ho, naka-upulang ako, naka-earphones ako.
13:46And, ang tulo sa akin ng, um, coach ko before, si Coach Vip Esada,
13:50when I started racing is, close your eyes and visualize the track.
13:55If kailangan mong, to mimic the hand movements, gawin mo, na,
13:59ticket ka lang from start to finish, i-visualize mo yung buong racetrack,
14:03para pag game time na, focus na lahat, wala ka nang iisipin, all problems outside the door,
14:10and, yung isa sa mga natutunan ko is, kapag gym ka na, kasi, or slalom,
14:15may mga, um, noise sa labas, may music, may mga sumisigaw na mga nanonood,
14:20and that distracts me.
14:22So, ako, lagi akong naka-windows up, kasi gusto ko, ako lang,
14:25at yung kotse yung, yung nagsisink, wala akong outside forces na nagko-cause ng distraction sa akin.
14:31Wow, nabanggit mo si Coach Vip, sorry, shout-out lang kay Coach Vip Esada,
14:35coach ko naman siya sa volleyball nung college.
14:38Ay, ang galing!
14:39Yes, sobrang helpful ni Coach Vip sa, sa racing journey ko.
14:43Na, ano ko rin siya, nakasakay na rin ako sa kanya during one training nung nagma-mentor siya sa rally.
14:49So, very interesting talaga itong rally, motocross, Gabby.
14:52Pero, if you want to shout-out somebody, kung may gusto kang pasalamatan, the floor is yours.
15:02First of all, of course, I would like to thank God for this opportunity,
15:06dahil napaka-unique ng opportunity na ito for me,
15:09and I consider myself very, very lucky.

15:21since the start of my racing journey.

15:27Racing is a very, can be an expensive sport.
