00:00U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the United States has prioritized defense and
00:07now expects its partners to do the same.
00:11Rubio spoke ahead of a joint meeting of NATO foreign ministers, having arrived in Brussels
00:17just a day after Trump announced sweeping global tariffs on exports to the U.S.
00:24So we do want to leave here with an understanding that we are on a pathway, a realistic pathway
00:28to every single one of the members' committee and fulfilling a promise to reach up to five
00:33percent of spending.
00:35Trump's presidency has marked a shift in global relations, with European allies increasingly
00:41concerned by his readiness to improve U.S. ties with Russia, which sees NATO as a threat.
00:49This unease has been deepened by recent White House insults directed at NATO allies Canada
00:55and Denmark, along with a warning from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that U.S. security
01:01priorities lie elsewhere, namely in Asia and on the U.S.'s own border.
01:09As a result, European governments are developing plans to assume more responsibility for their
01:15own security, with hopes of preventing a vacuum if U.S. troops and equipment are withdrawn.
01:22Rubio stated, however, that Trump is not against NATO, but he is against a NATO that
01:28does not have the capabilities it needs to fulfill its obligations.
01:36European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is preparing for further
01:41countermeasures against the 20 percent tariff on European goods announced by U.S. President
01:48Donald Trump.
01:49We are prepared to respond.
01:52We are already finalizing the first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs
01:58on steel.
02:00And we are now preparing for further countermeasures to protect our interests and our businesses
02:07if negotiations fail.
02:10On Wednesday, the U.S. President announced a minimum 10 percent tariff on all countries,
02:16with the EU added to a list of 60 worst offenders, facing a higher tailored rate of 20 percent.
02:24He also announced a 25 percent tariff on all automobiles made outside the U.S. to be implemented
02:31with immediate effect.
02:34Sweden and Ireland have already issued statements saying they regret the additional tariffs,
02:40which will come into force next Wednesday.
02:44However, Irish Deputy Leader Simon Harris urged the bloc to remain calm and measured
02:49in its response.
02:52The statement this morning by European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen clearly sought
02:57to reassure Europeans that the EU is ready to protect itself from Washington's decision
03:02to impose tariffs.
03:04Speaking from Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where she will later attend the first ever EU-Central
03:09Asia Summit, von der Leyen said Europe has everything it needs to make it through this
03:14storm and is now preparing further measures.
03:16But she nonetheless made it clear that Europe wants a negotiated solution because it stands
03:22for fair and rules-based trade, which will be one of the main message in her talks with
03:27Central Asian leaders today and tomorrow.
03:31Alice Taidi in Samarkand for Euronews.
03:35World leaders have been reacting to US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 10 percent
03:42baseline tariff on all countries, with Australia threatening to use dispute resolution powers
03:49in its free trade agreement with the United States.
03:53We will continue to make the strongest case for these unjustified tariffs to be removed
03:58from our exporters.
04:00Our existing free trade agreement with the United States contains dispute resolution
04:05mechanisms.
04:07China, which was hit with an extra 34 percent tariff, has said it will resolutely adopt
04:13countermeasures to safeguard its rights and interests, claiming Trump's so-called reciprocal
04:19tariffs violate international trade rules and amount to unilateral bullying.
04:25Japan, too, has called the tariffs extremely regrettable, with officials arguing Japan
04:31deserves an exemption considering the additional 24 percent levies already imposed on their
04:37country.
04:38And in South Korea, which was hit with a 25 percent rate, the stock market opened lower
04:44amid concerns over the tariff announcement.
04:48Although Canada and Mexico were exempt from this particular round, Canadian Prime Minister
04:53Mark Carney said Ottawa will respond as the current 25 percent levies on steel and aluminium
05:00imposed on both nations remain in place.
05:08Europe has around 2,000 combat aircraft.
05:12While European models like the French Raphael, the Swedish Gripen and the European Typhoon
05:17Consortium make up the bulk of the continent's air force, the F-35 from America's Lockheed
05:23Martin is a must-have.
05:26Italy has ordered 90 of this aircraft, Germany 35, Belgium 34 and Poland 32.
05:35All in all, Europe will be able to rely on a further 200 American aircraft in the coming
05:39years.
05:41This comes at the risk of maintaining its military dependence on the US despite EU calls
05:47for strategic autonomy.
05:48When it comes to air force, American technology has an advantage over European aircraft.
06:16There is still a small difference, because the Americans, despite everything, have technologies,
06:21especially in terms of stealth, that the Europeans do not master today.
06:27The question is, of course, to know whether for modern combat operations, stealth is
06:34something absolutely required, or whether we can do without it and rely on aircraft that
06:39are able to present a high level of discretion.
06:46Questions are also being raised concerning Washington's ability to ground aircraft through
06:51the possibility of using special software.
06:54However, using this kill switch could deal a blow to American reliability and the lucrative
07:00exports of its military industry.
07:08At least seven people have died after a boat carrying migrants from Turkey to the Greek
07:14island of Lesbos capsized, according to Greece's Coast Guard.
07:18The bodies, which included two children, were recovered as part of a search and rescue operation.
07:2523 other people were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.
07:31The operation is ongoing, with three Coast Guard vessels, an air force helicopter and
07:36a nearby boat all combing the area for any further potential victims.
07:44Wicked, the musical known worldwide, which experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks
07:48to the new film, will make its debut in Poland.
07:51The so-called non-replica version follows the original libretto, but has adapted the
07:56set design, choreography and costumes.
08:13The song is a tribute to our Polish realities.
08:20Elphaba rises to the top, runs away from those who want to kill her, to murder the inhabitants
08:26of the Ozy valley.
08:28And this song is probably the biggest hit of the musical.
08:44About 600 people applied for the casting and 44 were selected.
08:48The final line-up was accepted by the original author of the music and lyrics, Stephen Schwartz.
08:53As soon as I got to know the music for this play, when I saw the film, I fell in love.
08:58It is really the most difficult role I have ever played.
09:04Both vocally and acting and conditioning.
09:07It is an amazing challenge.
09:11Now the famous musical, which first premiered in 2003, is facing its latest adaptation.
09:18It is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions ever put together on Michelangelo Merisi,
09:24better known as Caravaggio.
09:28The exhibition features 24 works, including loans from international collections, some
09:33of which are being displayed in Italy for the first time.
09:37Held at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, a city dear to the artist, it coincides with the
09:43jubilee year and offers a rare opportunity to learn about the latest discoveries regarding Caravaggio.
09:52It is an extraordinary success for the audience.
09:54We have already sold 240,000 tickets in the 20 days we have been open.
09:58Caravaggio has an infinity of elements that strike contemporaneity.
10:03His paintings, with the figures in natural dimensions, these simple, dark backgrounds,
10:08without frills, and above all what he represents.
10:11In all his paintings there is his life, the people he loved, the men, the women, his companions,
10:16the models he portrayed live.
10:18Caravaggio has been able to represent the most intimate facets of the human soul
10:23with an unparalleled emotion.
10:25Caravaggio's realistic style is the reason behind the exhibition's popularity,
10:29attracting visitors from around the world.
10:32It is the beginning of a new era in painting,
10:35with which he shows the light, he shows everything to the painters who come later.
10:43It is wonderful.
10:45They are very dramatic, very intense.
10:48The figures are gathered closely together, the light and the dark and so on.
10:52So, I think they are very accessible.
10:55It is what I expected.
10:57It is very beautiful, because Caravaggio had already happened to me other times,
11:00to be able to admire him.
11:02Concentrated like this, it is very beautiful.
11:04It is a pity the assembly, but this is normal, natural, because it interests many,
11:10so it has attracted many people and will continue to do so.
11:13The exhibition runs until the 6th of July,
11:16and with the next few weeks already sold out,
11:19those who want to see it will need to hurry to secure their tickets.
11:24Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
