00:06group chat that mistakenly included a prominent journalist.
00:11At least 23 people were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, Palestinian medics
00:17said on Tuesday.
00:21South Sudan is teetering on the brink of a renewed civil war, according to a top U.N.
00:26official.
00:32Top national security officials for U.S. President Donald Trump discussed war plans in a Signal
00:38group chat that mistakenly included a prominent journalist.
00:43Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, wrote about his unprecedented experience on
00:49Monday, saying he didn't think it was real at first.
01:16U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was one of the officials who had shared information
01:21in the group chat.
01:22After the story quickly spread, he tried to discredit Goldberg.
01:26You're talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who's made
01:34a profession of peddling hoaxes time and time again to include the, I don't know, the hoaxes
01:41of Russia, Russia, Russia, or the fine people on both sides hoax, or suckers and losers
01:47hoax.
01:48So this is the guy that peddles in garbage.
01:50This is what he does.
01:52Meanwhile, Trump claims to be unaware.
01:55I don't know anything about it.
01:56I'm not a big fan of The Atlantic.
01:58To me, it's a magazine that's going out of business.
02:00I think it's not much of a magazine, but I know nothing about it.
02:04The story sparked concern among both Democratic and Republican lawmakers about how sensitive
02:09information could so easily leak.
02:12The National Security Council said the messages appeared authentic and added it was looking
02:16into how Goldberg's number was added to the chat.
02:20U.S. President Donald Trump has said a planned visit of the second lady, Asha Vance, and
02:28that of senior White House officials to Greenland is not a provocation.
02:32During a cabinet meeting on Monday, Trump took a more conciliatory tone, casting the
02:37visit this week as based on friendliness.
02:40He claims to have been receiving positive overtures from the island, although authorities
02:45there have expressed concerns ahead of the visit.
02:48Well, not provocation.
02:50This is friendliness, not provocation.
02:53We're dealing with a lot of people from Greenland that would like to see something happen with
02:58respect to their being properly protected and properly taken care of.
03:03They're calling us.
03:04We're not calling them.
03:05The Greenlandic Prime Minister warned of American aggression and lamented what he called
03:10a mess caused by the upcoming visit from Vance.
03:13The U.S. second lady is set to travel to Greenland this week as Trump continues to suggest the
03:19U.S. could take control of the mineral-rich Arctic island.
03:30At least 23 people were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, Palestinian medics
03:36said on Tuesday.
03:38Several hospitals across the enclave announced they had received bodies, including several
03:42children.
03:44It comes as the United Nations announced on Monday it would reduce its presence in the
03:48Strip by about 100 staffers after an Israeli tank strike hit one of its compounds last
03:53week.
03:55The strikes claimed the life of a U.N. colleague from Bulgaria and left six others from France,
04:00Moldova, North Macedonia, Palestine, and the United Kingdom with severe injuries, some
04:06of them life-altering.
04:08The location of this U.N. compound was well known to all the parties in the conflict,
04:13and I reiterate that all parties to the conflict are bound by international law to protect
04:18the inviolability of United Nations premises.
04:22A building belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross was also hit by
04:26the Israeli military.
04:29Israel said it fired on the building by mistake after falsely identifying a threat from militants.
04:35The operations of aid workers has been heavily affected since the ceasefire in Gaza collapsed
04:41last week, according to a spokesperson of the U.N.'s humanitarian office, although the
04:45full impact of a U.N. staff reduction remains unclear.
04:50Israel has also cut off all food, medicine, aid, and other supplies to Gaza's population
04:55for the past three weeks.
05:00Israel's parliament has passed a state budget securing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's
05:04governing coalition and granting him months of political stability amid growing public
05:08pressure over the war in Gaza.
05:12Protests erupted outside the Prime Minister's office and Knesset in Jerusalem, with demonstrators
05:17blocking roads and forcing ministers and legislators to walk to the parliamentary building.
05:23The rallies also called for negotiations to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas
05:28in Gaza.
05:29Opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned the budget, calling it theft, and accusing the
05:33government of cutting the income and future of Israel's middle class while shamelessly
05:38exploiting those who work, pay taxes, and serve in the military.
05:44Prime Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized the protests, describing them as a bankruptcy
05:48of the rule of law, and urged police action against demonstrators blocking access to Knesset.
05:56The budget vote was a critical test for Netanyahu's coalition, which includes ultra-nationalist
06:01and ultra-Orthodox parties.
06:07Thousands of protesters from the opposition in Turkey staged a rally outside Istanbul
06:12City Hall on Monday evening in support of the mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu.
06:17The protest came after İmamoğlu was ordered officially jailed by an Istanbul court on
06:22Sunday pending trial on corruption charges.
06:25On Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for an end to the mass protests.
06:42İmamoğlu's detention last week sparked the largest wave of street demonstrations
06:58in Turkey in more than a decade.
07:01Later Monday, anti-government protesters clashed with police amid the growing demonstrations.
07:07The Istanbul mayor is widely seen as the top challenger who could most likely defeat
07:12President Erdoğan in a general election.
07:29Crises such as the war in Ukraine or Trump's tariffs on European products have led citizens
07:34to ask the EU to invest more in defence and security in 2025.
07:42There has also been a growing demand for competitiveness as well as the strengthening of the economy
07:47and industry in order to face global challenges.
07:51A view that has become more widespread among the younger generation.
08:00Among the priorities Europeans keep on the list for strengthening the EU's position
08:03in the world, the most popular are economic.
08:07In contrast, food security and agriculture as well as climate action and emissions reductions
08:12fall by five and six points respectively.
08:16There has also been a slight increase in demand for education and research.
08:22The European Parliament presented the Eurobarometer results on Tuesday.
08:29In times of more uncertainties, people turn to the EU.
08:33For example, we see in the survey that's very high, the 74% of the Europeans believe that
08:41the EU has benefited, being part of the EU benefited to them.
08:45And it's the highest data that we have been recording since the question was first asked
08:51in 1983.
08:54European citizens also call on Parliament to take into account the cost of living and
08:58the employment situation.
09:01The perception that their standard of living will neither change for the better nor for
09:04the worse in the coming years is the most widespread among respondents.
09:09However, 7.7% more Europeans than in 2024 believe that their standard of living will
09:15get worse.
09:18More than ever, the public appreciates being part of the European Union, specifically 74%
09:24of those who voted, a result which has not been obtained since 1983.
09:29The top UN official in South Sudan warned the country is on the brink of a renewed civil
09:38war after the government postponed the latest round of peace efforts.
09:43UN Special Representative Nicolas Haesem said violence is escalating as elections approach
09:49and political competition between the country's president and vice-president intensifies.
09:55Haesem noted the two sides don't have sufficient trust in each other to steer the nation towards
10:00a democratic path.
10:02South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 following decades of conflict.
10:08It descended into a civil war as forces loyal to the country's president and vice-president
10:13clashed.
10:14The conflict claimed the lives of more than 400,000 people before a peace agreement was
10:19signed in 2018.
10:22While elections were initially set for 2023, they've been postponed twice and are now expected
10:28in 2026.
10:32Commemorations have been held in Germany, France and Spain for the victims of the German
10:37Wing's plane crash ten years after the tragedy took place.
10:43150 people were killed after the passenger jet, which was travelling from Barcelona in
10:49Spain to Dusseldorf in Germany, was deliberately downed by its co-pilot in March 2015.
10:57The victims included 16 students and two teachers from a high school in the western German town
11:03of Haltern am See, who were returning home from an exchange trip to Spain.
11:10In Haltern, students placed roses in the courtyard of the Joseph Koenig High School, while hundreds
11:16of people gathered in front of a plaque bearing the victims' names.
11:22At 10.41am, the exact time of the crash, a moment of silence was held.
11:28Reeds were also laid at the town cemetery, where some of the students are buried.
11:35Elsewhere, relatives of victims travelled to the site of the crash in the French Alps,
11:40while commemorations were also planned at the airports in Dusseldorf and Barcelona.
