00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're breaking down all the must-know details about Finn
00:15Wolfhard's new horror-comedy film, Hell of a Summer.
00:25Co-written and co-directed by Finn Wolfhard, Finn Wolfhard is certainly no, ahem, stranger
00:32to the horror genre.
00:34Perhaps best known for his breakout performance as Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things, Wolfhard
00:38has become a fan-favorite among fright-seeking audiences.
00:49It also helps that his resume includes roles in films the likes of It and The Turning.
00:54Not to mention the latest offerings in the horror-tinged Ghostbusters franchise.
01:09Although he began acting at a young age and has since made a name for himself as a musician,
01:14Finn has also explored directing, most notably with the 2020 short film Night Shifts.
01:19Hell of a Summer, however, marks his feature-length directorial debut, sharing the duties with
01:24Billy Brick.
01:25Which brings us to…
01:27Co-written and co-directed by Billy Brick, Billy Brick, Finn Wolfhard's co-director
01:47and writing partner, is a rising star in his own right.
01:50The Canadian actor has been a frequent collaborator with Wolfhard, having starred together in
01:55such films as Jesse Eisenberg's When You Finish Saving the World and Ghostbusters Afterlife,
02:00where Brick played Zack, one of the workers at Spinners.
02:03Their partnership represents a bold step into filmmaking, with both young artists sharing
02:08a vision for creating unique genre content.
02:10In this case, it's all about giving a fresh voice to the slasher sub-genre.
02:14So, what exactly is Hell of a Summer all about?
02:26Well, the bloody slasher follows a group of summer camp counselors who find themselves
02:31facing unexpected terrors at Camp Pineway the night before campers arrive.
02:35At the center of the story is 20-something-year-old counselor Jason,
02:40who arrives thinking his biggest challenge will be connecting with his younger co-workers.
02:46However, he soon discovers a far more terrifying problem.
02:55A masked killer is on the loose, and worse, counselors are systematically being picked
03:00off one by one.
03:05With everyone blaming the deaths on Jason, the group of teenagers must try to survive
03:10the night.

03:21The Cast
03:22Hell of a Summer features an ensemble cast of rising young talents, including both directors
03:32in starring roles.
03:33Yep, Finn Wolfhard and Billy Brick appear as Chris and Bobby, best friends who think
03:38this will be their summer to score with girls.
03:44Leading the cast as the older counselor Jason is Fred Hechinger, whose career has been rapidly
03:50gaining momentum, to say the least.
03:52Hechinger has recently starred in critically acclaimed films like Thelma, as well as major
03:56blockbusters such as Gladiator 2 and Kraven the Hunter.
04:00He's also taken on the horror genre, having appeared in Netflix's Fear Street trilogy.
04:06Rounding out the cast is Knock at the Cabin's Abby Quinn as the cool girl, Reservation Dog's
04:10DeFerro Wunitai as the bad boy, Parody Seremi as the mean girl, Matthew Finlan as the theater
04:16kid, Julia Doyle as the hot vegan and Krista Nazaire as the sweet girl, each bringing their
04:21unique energy to the project.

04:24Overcoming Skepticism
04:25One of the major hurdles Hell of a Summer faced early on was securing the financing
04:33needed for the project.
04:34In speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Finn Wolfhard acknowledged that obtaining funding
04:38was challenging because many investors questioned his and co-director Billy Brick's young age.
04:43However, he never saw their youth as a disadvantage, believing that quote, storytelling isn't
04:48defined by age.
04:50While aware that they would likely make mistakes as first-time directors, Wolfhard says he
04:54embraced the learning experience, emphasizing teamwork and communication.
04:59In fact, he states that he gained more insight about filmmaking, leadership and collaboration
05:04during Hell of a Summer's production than at any other point in his life.
05:145.
05:15A Four-Year Journey
05:16Speaking of production, filming
05:34for Hell of a Summer took place in Ontario, Canada over a three-week shoot, starting in
05:39July 2022 and wrapping in August of that year.
05:56Given its summer camp setting, much of the movie was naturally shot in wooded outdoor
06:00locations to best capture that classic slasher atmosphere, and with things ready for editing
06:05come December, the post-production came in February 2023.
06:09Including the initial writing process, which started in 2019, it took four years for the
06:15project to fully come to life and ultimately be ready for audience consumption.
06:214.
06:23Horror-Comedy Hybrid
06:24It's safe to say that Hell of a Summer isn't your standard slasher, seeing as how it blends
06:29its scares with laugh-out-loud humor.
06:37Our young directors, Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bricks, say they worked hard to ensure that
06:41neither the horror nor comedy elements overshadow each other.
06:45Their wish was to create a unique viewing experience that appeals to fans of both genres.
06:50Perhaps the tone can best be described as Scream meets Wet Hot American Summer.
06:59By both subverting classic genre tropes and paying tribute to beloved horror staples,
07:03Hell of a Summer delivers a contemporary perspective to a time-honored horror setting, the summer
07:08camp.
07:093.
07:10Rated R
07:11While Hell of a Summer definitely blends horror with comedy, don't be fooled by the latter.
07:16The kills are very gruesome.
07:18With its brutal slasher premise, the movie earned an R rating for strong violence, gore,
07:24language, and mature themes.
07:25Yup, this isn't one of those watered-down PG-13 horror films.
07:30In fact, Finn Wolfhard made it clear from the get-go that he wanted the movie to fully
07:34embrace its horror elements, going all-in with its R rating.
07:41With that, fans of old-school slasher films can expect plenty of suspense, shocking moments,
07:46and of course, a generous helping of blood.
07:532.
07:55Inspirations
07:56Let's face it, the list of summer camp-set horror films is a long one.
08:10And while both Finn Wolfhard and Billy Brick have cited classic 80s slashers like Friday
08:15the 13th and Sleepaway Camp as key influences, they've also pointed to self-aware fright
08:19flicks like Scream and Evil Dead 2 as further inspirations for Helluva Summer.
08:27However, they credit the beloved horror-comedy Shaun of the Dead as having a major impact
08:34on the film.
08:44They say that Edgar Wright's 2004 movie, where the aimless lives of roommates are hilariously
08:49disrupted by the zombie apocalypse, encouraged the film's balance of character-driven storytelling
08:53and comedy, allowing characters to be quote, weird in the face of death.
