00:00We can review slide on over as we're joined by Marcelo Meyer, Red Sox top prospect here on Jones
00:07and Keith. Marcelo, thanks for coming up here. I know it's a busy day, an opening day for you guys,
00:13so thanks for stopping by. You had a monster big league camp, spring training, the two games in
00:19Mexico as well. It's not your call, it's not up to you, but do you feel like you should be in the
00:26big leagues right now? Do you feel like you did enough to earn your spot coming out of camp?
00:30Yeah, obviously, like you said, all that stuff isn't up to me, but as a player
00:36and based on performance, I feel like I did earn a spot on that team. With that being said,
00:41things didn't go my way and now I'm here and I'm just gonna get after it every single day,
00:45keep doing what I'm doing. So how'd they leave it with you? Obviously, you're starting here in
00:48Worcester. Was it sort of a, hey, just kill it down there and we'll let you know? Did they give
00:53you any kind of timetable? What were those conversations like? Not really a timetable. I
00:57think it's kind of hard to tell. I also think it's part of the business, they don't tell you as well,
01:02even if they know. But yeah, they pretty much told me just to keep doing what I've been doing. I think
01:08everyone knows that I played really well this spring. But yeah, just keep playing the game that
01:14I know how to play and everything will fall into place. So they've moved you around a little bit
01:19on the diamond, a natural shortstop. But I think you played in your minor league career,
01:24if I saw right, a couple of games at third. Two games at third, yeah. And then they even gave you
01:28a game at second at the tail end of spring training. So is that something you expect to
01:32do more of here? Are you going to play only shortstop here? How are they going to use you
01:35defensively? No, I'll be playing one game at second, one game at third, and then four at short.
01:43So yeah, it's a new opportunity, a new challenge for me that I've never done in my career.
01:47Obviously, I had some reps there in the offseason and in spring training, but I've never done
01:53anything like that in a full season. So I'm really excited for that opportunity.
01:57Are you open to playing other positions? Because we know that can be a hot debate sometimes.
02:01Some guys don't want to move off of certain positions. Are you good playing all those spots?
02:05I just want to be a big leader. I'll play wherever.
02:08Okay. We're joined by Marcelo Meyer, Red Sox top prospect here on Jones and Keefe.
02:12Woo Sox opener. We're live at Polar Park. You can catch the Red Sox tonight on WEEI.
02:19We saw Christian Campbell make his debut. You and Roman Anthony here today. From the outside
02:24looking in, we group all you three together. We're like the big three, the three Red Sox top prospects.
02:31I don't know. What can you tell us about the relationship between the three? How close are
02:34you guys? How much time are you spending around one another, certainly while you were together
02:39in the big league camp? I know Christian is with the Red Sox now, but what's the relationship like
02:43between the three of you? Yeah. So last year was the first time that all three of us shared
02:47the field together. And of course the media does a really good job of hyping that stuff up.
02:53But yeah, I mean, I love those guys. Obviously when you go through a grind like this
02:57first six, seven months out of the year, you get really close to people. They're like your
03:01second family, right? So yeah, seeing Campbell and seeing other guys that you've played with
03:07in the minor leagues make their debut and live their dream out, it's super cool to watch. So
03:11we were on the clubhouse yesterday watching the game. You must have been watching, right? Of course.
03:15What'd you think? It was awesome. It was awesome. I mean, just to see him there and his family there,
03:20because I know this game. I know how much a family sacrifice is to not just the player.
03:25Just to see all of them there, seeing Campbell live out his dream, it was really special.
03:30And did you room with Roman Anthony during spring? Is that true? Every time.
03:34Is that something you get to pick or the manager just tells you here?
03:38Yeah, so he's pretty much been my roommate ever since we've started playing together,
03:41whether that's in the spring or during the season. So he's my roommate right now.
03:45So I got a text from, I'm not going to say who it was Rob Bradford. And he told me to ask you.
03:54And so he told me to ask you about your spring training house, which Roman Anthony says was
04:02haunted, but you don't think it was haunted? Haunted? Haunted. Yeah. Haunted house. Wow.
04:07Okay. Go. Yeah. We have a roommate. So we lived with five dudes in spring training.
04:10We have a roommate named Matthew Donlan, who was fully convinced that his room was haunted.
04:16And like, to this day, he still texts us. He's like, dude,
04:18the controller was on the table last night. It's not there anymore. I'm like, save it.
04:24I'm not buying it. You know, and one day, one day Matthew took Roman's controller of his room
04:30because it was, that's how you turn the light on through a controller. And just started turning
04:35the lights on and off. And me and Roman started freaking out because we didn't buy it. We didn't
04:42buy it at first. Next thing you know, his lights, he's like, dude, my light just turned on. And it
04:47happened again. And we were like already packing our stuff. We were going to the Holiday Inn for
04:50the night. We were out of there. Yeah. We were, we were gone. He ended up telling us that it was
04:55him. That's pretty good. I don't think the house is haunted. It was pretty cool. So that house
04:59wasn't haunted, but would you believe that some houses could be haunted? 100%. 100%. Why? Why not?
05:08Well, do you have like an experience outside of spring training? No, no. I mean, as a kid,
05:12I just used to see ghosts. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Interesting. Where was that? Actually at my
05:18house. At your home where you grew up? Really? Yeah. Were you like, this is like a Jennifer
05:22Love Hewitt situation? Apparently, I don't know if this is true also, but some of my buddy's houses
05:27in that neighborhood were seriously haunted as well. Um, apparently a long, like before they
05:33built that neighborhood, it was a cemetery. No way. That checks out. Yeah. Okay. Are you messing
05:37with us? No, no, no. I'm serious. I don't know. This is the first time we've met, so I don't know.
05:40Let me just flash the lights real quick. This is fantastic. I might have to fact check with like.
05:43No, no, no. Don't. No, no. I like it. Yeah. Yeah. This is better than fact checking. So you could
05:47see ghosts for a certain. When I was a kid, I haven't seen one in a long time. Hopefully,
05:52I don't see one anymore. Right. Yeah. Yeah. But I used to be really scared of ghosts as a kid.
05:56What if the debut is like an angels in the outfield kind of thing? Well, that's another
05:59whole thing. Yeah. It would be like a whole different situation. Yeah, they were. They
06:02were helped. Good ghost. Yeah. They helped Tony Danza. I can imagine. The whole thing.
06:07Keith is big on the cryptids. What else do you believe? Like aliens? Is that something you
06:10believe in? Of course. Okay. Nice. Good. You guys never seen those videos of like,
06:15it's like the earth and it just keeps zooming out and zooming out and zooming out.
06:19Yeah. Like, come on. Yeah. Oh, we were the only ones. There's a lot going on out there.
06:22That's for sure. Can't be that. You get it. You're tall, Gray. Of course. You're small,
06:25all of it. You're Nordics. No, I'm, I'm excited about this. Uh, not to completely pivot away from
06:32this, but I'm curious, what's the relationship like with Alex Cora? You know, a guy that hopefully
06:36one day you're playing for soon, but just all the time you guys had in, in, uh, camp and everything
06:41like that. What's that been like? It was great. I mean, AC has been around the game for so long
06:47and, uh, just have a manager that's been around the game for so long that played that understands,
06:51um, what players go through and has been a manager for such a long time. It's, it's,
06:56it's really cool to have someone like that, um, leading the team.
06:58Uh, did I read this right? Are you, you were Yankee fan? Is that right?
07:03I am. Or what? No, no, not now. As a, as a kid, you were a Yankee fan? Yeah, I was.
07:06You like Jeter? Love Jeter. Okay. So that's, look, I mean, I, I. At least he's got the ghost
07:10and alien thing going for him. He's not the biggest fan of this, but like, is that, is that
07:15something you hear from a lot of Red Sox fans are like, ah, Yankee fan? Like, is that the kind of,
07:19I feel like it's not as controversial of a thing now as like when we were kids for instance. Yeah.
07:24Yeah. But I don't really care. You know, like I didn't know I was going to get drafted by the
07:28Red Sox and play with the Red Sox. Um, so as a kid I, I grew up and I loved Derek Jeter,
07:34you know, like no one could take that away from me. I still, I still love that guy. I love the
07:38way that he carried himself the way that he played. Um, obviously I'm not a Yankee fan anymore.
07:43I love the Red Sox. Um, but yeah, that, that's who I grew up watching.
07:47Uh, speaking of watching, is that something you do a lot? Like in your free time? Like,
07:51will you watch a lot of the major league games? I know yesterday's different, you know, it's the
07:54opener or do you kind of get away from it? Like on your, in your downtime?
07:59Um, I think there's a balance. I think, I think you could learn a lot from watching games and
08:03watching people play. Um, but then also we're humans and we have a life outside of the field
08:09and we're, we do this a lot of hours during the day. So, you know, the time that I'm not at the
08:15field, it's, it's kind of like my own time and I try to, you know, do things that I enjoy.
08:19Marcelo Meyer, Red Sox top prospect joining us here on Jones and Keefe. Uh, I think the way the,
08:24the games played a trend line would go 91, 78, 77, the last three years. Some would say,
08:32uh, the best ability is availability. Do you, do you feel like you've been available enough?
08:37Um, I think, you know, that answer. So what, what can you do? What are you, what do you know?
08:43He wants you to answer in a certain way. What are you working on to come to combat that? If you can
08:46work on anything to combat, or is it just bad luck? Like what, like what can you do to avoid
08:50that going forward? Yeah. I mean, I think, I think a lot of it's just bad luck. And then a lot of it
08:55as well as just, um, me having a new routine this year, me working really hard in the off season to
09:00make sure that that doesn't happen again. Obviously you don't, you never know what's
09:04going to happen in the game. Uh, we play every single day and, and I played the game extremely
09:09hard and, you know, as an athlete, you run risk of injury. Um, but yeah, I mean this off season,
09:15I, most of it, well, a lot of it was, uh, rehabbing and stuff. And then the time that I
09:20wasn't rehabbing, a lot of it was making sure that I put my body in a really good spot to
09:24hopefully play one 62 and, and, and more, you know, if, you know, if we make the playoffs,
09:30um, but yeah, I mean, you know, every time, every time I had to spring training, my goal is just to
09:35play every single game of the season. Obviously I know in the minors, they, they limit your playing
09:40time and stuff. Um, but yeah, I want to play every single day that I can. So beyond games played,
09:45do you have any personal goals? I mean, making the big leagues is one, games played sounds like one.
09:48Do you have any other personal goals you're trying to check? Um, I mean, I really like where I'm at
09:53right now. So for me, it's just staying ready for when my time comes, um, as a guy who obviously
10:00doesn't start the season in the big leagues. If when you, when you get called up, your goal is
10:03to help the team win in any way you can. So, you know, for whenever I get called up, I don't know
10:08when that's going to be, it's going to be to, to be ready and help the team win. Do you get caught
10:13up in prospect rankings? Cause I can only imagine for the last several years, you've been right up
10:16there towards the top, up, down, whatever. But, uh, you know, there's so many different websites
10:21do it so many different ones, put it together your teammates with a bunch of guys that you're
10:24all around. Is that something you even talk about? Is it on your radar at all? I couldn't care less.
10:29Yeah. Yeah. I mean, those things fluctuate so much and, and, you know, if you're playing bad,
10:35they're going to hate you. If you're playing good, they're going to love you. Right. So
10:38I think those things always change. So that's, that's not really something that,
10:41that I ever worry about. A couple of quick ones. Uh, how do you feel about the big three
10:45nickname for you, Anthony Campbell? Do you like that? Does it need some work? How do you feel
10:49about that? I don't really care for it. You know, I know, I know people like to use it cause it's
10:55exciting. Obviously we have a lot of great players in this Oregon. They kind of put us in
11:00the spotlight. Um, but yeah, at the end of the day, we're each our own individuals and, um,
11:05and we just, we, we just play the game wanting to make it to the big leagues, not necessarily for
11:09like publicity and stuff like that. So out of the magazine covers, exactly. So out of the three of
11:15you, who do you think is the, uh, the funniest? Um, out of the three of us? Yes. I'm the funniest.
11:23You're the funniest. Nice. I like that. Good confidence. Yep. Uh, who do you think is, uh,
11:29the smartest? Like if you were like doing trivia or something like that, who do you think would
11:32get the most stuff? Right? Hmm. I don't know. I think we'd all be pretty bad at it.
11:39Who, uh, who do you think is the fat? You all line up and race. Who's the fastest
11:44me? Nice. Okay. I like, look, I like the confidence. This is honestly all pretty
11:48similar running speeds. Me and Casey had the longest argument throughout spring training of
11:53who's faster. And, um, I ended up calling our AA manager who were super close. So I love him.
11:58Shout out, shout out Epi. Um, and he ended up saying I was faster. So that ended the debate
12:03right there, but he wants to race me so bad. I was going to say, what would the race be?
12:07It's like home to first, is it like the outfield? Like what, what's a fair,
12:10wait, so you're waiting, hang on. You're like Jerry Seinfeld. You won't race him.
12:14Good show. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You choose not to run. No, no, no. I mean, there's just,
12:18why would I race him? Cause you're the fastest. All right. They already know that you're the
12:21fastest. Yeah. I mean, I'll, I'll race him eventually, you know, when we're on the line,
12:25but I'm not going to like take time out of my day to go race a guy. So what,
12:28what would the race be? You were asking? Yeah. Is it, is it just like 60 yards, 50 yards? Yeah. Nice.
12:34I couldn't even run down the hallway at our work without being out of that. So that's, so I, I,
12:37well, I don't like my chances in that last last question. This is, uh, been tearing our show
12:42apart. It's a baseball question. Baseball guy. This is a good one. This is actually,
12:45this is the most important question we've asked. Yes. Is the catcher an infielder?
12:49Um, yeah. Yeah. Hell yeah. That's it. That's over. The debate is over in my face. Thank you
12:56very much. Yeah. Well, he's on the, is a pitcher an infielder? No, he's on the infield. He's on
13:04the mound. In your face. Damn it. Yes. All right. I'll take that. You know what? I'm voting you,
13:08I'm voting you smartest for thinking on your feet out of the big three. I will. Marcello,
13:12we appreciate the time. Thanks so much. Uh, best of luck this season. Best of luck here today.
13:17And we'll see you in the big league soon. Appreciate that. All right. Marcello Meyer,
13:19Red Sox, top prospect here on Jones and.
