00:00I recognize the Senator from Washington.
00:02Mr. President, I have been unequivocal in saying in this country we use our voices and
00:10our votes, not violence, to advocate for change.
00:14I have said it many times.
00:16I will say it many times more.
00:19And I say it today.
00:21But you are sorely mistaken if you think I'm going to sit here, feet away from our Capitol
00:26police officers and let the Senate say we stand by the richest men on the planet before
00:34saying we stand by the men and women who keep us safe every single day.
00:39Where is the solidarity for our officers here?
00:43And where, by the way, is the plaque that Congress passed into law honoring their sacrifice
00:51on January 6th?
00:53Do I have to march down to Speaker Johnson's office, put it up on my own?
00:59You can hang it on my door.
01:01You just bring the plaque.
01:02I'll go get the nails and do it myself.
01:04Because I'm not going to let anyone ever erase this history.
01:08And I'm not going to let them paper it over with outrage on behalf of the richest man
01:13in the world.
01:14I have no problem condemning violence.
01:17I will do that any day of the week.
01:20I condemn attacks on our car owners and salespeople.
01:24I condemn destroying other people's personal property.
01:28This is not a new position for me.
01:30But you will have to excuse me if I don't take some Republicans seriously when they
01:36make this big show about law and order at the same time they are letting this president
01:42stab law enforcement in the back.
01:44I'm not going to let Republicans get by selling a charade not weeks after they voted
01:50to freeze funding levels for law enforcement in a bill.
01:56Your time has expired.
01:57Mr. President, I ask for three additional minutes.
02:01Is there an objection?
02:02Without objection.
02:03Without objection.
02:04I'm not going to let some Republicans get by selling a charade not weeks after they
02:09voted to freeze funding levels for law enforcement in a bill where House Republicans slashed
02:15D.C.'s budget for police officers.
02:19Not months after Trump tried to halt COPS grants and many Republicans didn't breathe
02:23a word about it.
02:25Not when Trump is still in the middle of firing just about as many federal law enforcement
02:30workers as he can get away with.
02:32And certainly not when some of my Republican colleagues are still ignoring how our lawless
02:38president continues to champion the very people who attacked our Capitol Police.
02:43Just this week, mere days ago, President Trump speculated about compensating people
02:49who committed crimes on January 6th, about rewarding their violence with taxpayer dollars.
02:56Where is that outrage?
02:58Where is the condemnation?
02:59What are some of you waiting for?
03:01And don't you try for a single second to say, oh, he's not talking about the violent ones.
03:06Y'all know better.
03:07We know better.
03:08Remember when he tried to say that about Partons?
03:12Remember how that worked out?
03:14Trump pardoned people who violently attacked police.
03:17They are back on the streets, except for the ones who already committed new crimes.
03:22I don't know how my colleagues keep forgetting what happened on January 6th.
03:26I don't know how on earth it is not burned into their memories, but President Trump is
03:31talking about people who attacked this building, our offices, our staff, our democracy.
03:38He's talking about people who smashed windows in that we walk by every day.
03:43People who brought bats and weapons to the halls where we meet our constituents.
03:48People who beat the Capitol Police, who keep us safe every day, to the Capitol Police who
03:53are standing guard even now, who sit right outside this chamber.
03:58These are violent criminals, and President Trump is talking about them like heroes.
04:03He wants us to write them a check over my dead body, Mr. President.
04:07And I'm going to say it again and again, like some of my Republican colleagues, I will
04:11say it for the same, for the people who burned Teslas, and for the people who smashed windows
04:17in here at the Capitol.
04:19I'm tired of watching this.
04:20I know our constituents are.
04:22We need to demand that Speaker Johnson hang that plaque that he is hiding.
04:26It is not too much to ask.
04:28And I hope that this body recognizes violence is violence, and we should condemn the attacks
04:34on January 6th.
04:36Thank you, Mr. President.
04:37I yield the floor.
