00:10We recently met a hiker who came back to Mt. Pulag. He saw something, not only did he see, he also videotaped it. What kind of animal is this?

00:19It is said that the feeling of a hiker like General Santos City, Paul B, when he hiked for the longest time at the most remote point in Luzon, Mt. Pulag, is like being in Alapaap.

00:32It was our first time far from Mindanao. We really prepared ourselves. It was very enlightening that we went there for the first time and the weather was cold.

00:40The view on the trail is breathtaking, so he did not doubt why he chose this playground of the gods.

00:46The sun is beautiful, the weather is fine. Can you see the farming on the left side?

00:52But while their group was following the mossy forest trail, someone wanted to play with him.

01:21What Paul B spotted on the mossy forest trail of Mt. Pulag is a Grusa Mariana or Philippine Deer.

01:26It is also known as the Philippine Sambar and Philippine Brown Deer.

01:29They are nocturnal. They wake up at night to look for grass, leaves, and roots.

01:34Every morning, they rest in the jungle.

01:37It is a natural behavior of a horse to be elusive or a bit of a nuisance to people.

01:41These horses were usually hunted.

01:43When they see people, they thought they would get hurt.

01:46When they see strangers, it is for them to have what we call a fight or flight reaction.

01:50Philippine Deer are endemic or can only be found in the Philippines.

01:53They live in the islands of Luzon, Polillo, Catanduanes, Mindoro, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao.

02:00They are believed to be extinct in Bohol and Marinduque while they were declared extinct in Bidiran.

02:08According to the IUCN, Philippine Deer are now vulnerable.

02:10One of the dangers to their population is the destruction of their habitat or habitat loss.

02:15It is one of the things we can do as a part of conservation to protect our mountains, to protect their natural habitat,

02:21to preserve this particular vulnerable animal.

02:24There is another species of horse that can be found here in the Philippines.

02:27And it has a place in our new currency.

02:30This is the Rusa Alfredi or Visayan Spotted Deer that lives in the rainforests of Panay and Negros Islands.

02:41It is easy to recognize because of its small body.

02:44It has sharp teeth and its spots.

02:47It is one of the rarest in the world.

02:50But they are endangered.
