00:00Over the past year Consumer Advocacy Group Choice have travelled across the country visiting
00:07104 Australian supermarkets where they've been recording the average price of grocery
00:13items.
00:14Now they were targeting specifically 14 common items that usually are on everybody's shopping
00:19list and that includes beef mince, milk, carrots and apples.
00:23And what they found was that Coles and Aldi over the course of a year had significantly
00:28declined in the average basket of shopping items in that price and that was both with
00:32and without specials.
00:34However Woolworths over the course of the year with that same basket of grocery items
00:38had increased by more than 3.7% and that was with specials as well.
00:44So just to put this into perspective that difference works out to be about $1.70 per
00:49weekly shop.
00:50Over the course of a year that weekly shop would cost Aussie consumers about $90 but
00:56it is worth noting that most people when they go for their average shop do spend and
01:01buy a lot more than just 14 common grocery items.
01:05Now this all comes a week after the ACCC has released its report and its findings which
01:10found that supermarket giants had limited incentive to compete on prices.
01:15So today Choice has again called on the Federal Government to implement one of those 20 recommendations
01:20from the ACCC to sort of increase their price transparency among those supermarket prices
01:27and that is something that while it is deeply concerning has certainly been a blow to many
01:32Australians across the country who continue to feel that cost of living bite.
