00:00The Senator from Iowa is recognized.
00:04Last night, the Senate passed my bipartisan resolution to bring attention to a very important
00:13issue, but one that isn't discussed often enough.
00:19It's the deaths by blood clots.
00:22And we call March Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Awareness Month.
00:35So that's a fancy name for blood clots.
00:39And last night, the Senate took this action.
00:44We took that action because we want to bring attention to the fact that this health problem
00:55affects about 900,000 Americans and contributes to $10 billion in medical costs annually.
01:09While blood clots can be life-threatening, they are preventable and treatable.
01:17Sadly, they're among the leading causes of preventable hospital deaths.
01:25Cancer patients, pregnant women, older Americans, and patients having surgery all face increased
01:35risk of blood clotting.
01:39So I have a constituent very active in this movement.
01:46And I've met with him over the last three or four years that he's led a national effort
01:52to bring attention to the problems of blood clotting.
01:56So I'm thankful that Des Moines, Iowa resident Todd Robertson is working on this issue and
02:05was in my office yesterday to discuss what can be done even beyond passing this resolution
02:14naming a whole month for this attention.
02:22He has the title of National Blood Clot Alliance Patient Liaison.
02:29So I want to give thanks to Todd in a big way about his passions because we're all more
02:37aware of the risk of blood clots and the necessary steps to prevent blood clotting and preserving
02:47our nation's health with the people that have this problem.
02:52So I would encourage all Americans to visit StopTheClot.org so every American can understand
03:03possible risk with clotting and how you can prevent that in your own life.
03:11I yield the floor and suggest the absence of a quorum.
