00:0035 years ago today, the freely elected Parliament of Lithuania declared that
00:08country was restoring its independence after about 50 years of Soviet occupation.
00:16This started the breakup of the Soviet Union. The end of that evil empire made
00:25the world safer and millions of people freer. So I say thank you, Lithuania, or I
00:33should say in their language, achoo. Lithuania didn't become a country just
00:41in the 1990s, however. It's a very old country. In fact, it was a significant
00:48regional power in the Middle Ages. The modern Republic of Lithuania was born
00:55February the 16th, 1918. The United States has maintained continuous
01:03diplomatic relations with Lithuania for now a hundred and three years, going back
01:10to 1922. As an American, I'm proud that our country never recognized the Soviet
01:18annexation of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, just like we don't recognize
01:25Russia's annexation of any part of Ukraine this very day. Today,
01:33Lithuania is free and Lithuania is prosperous. Lithuania is a close U.S. ally
01:41and a beacon of Western values on the frontlines of freedom. I thank Lithuania
01:49for its friendship, for its important contribution to the NATO alliance, and
01:57for its vocal defense of our shared values. I yield the floor and suggest the
02:05absence of a quorum.
